A beautiful Lyon edition of Suetonius' Life of the Twelve Caesars, accompanied by three great 16th-century commentaries (Beroalde, Sabellico and Egnazio) and the famous inaugural lecture by Angelo Politian on this author delivered at the University of Florence in 1490-1491.
Our copy was annotated by the Baron Pierre de Caila (or Cayla) (1744-1831), counselor at the Bordeaux Court of Aids (1768-1789), an important naturalist and "antiquarian ".
A Bordeaux wine now bears the name of its castle.
Precious testimony on the readings of an academician of Bordeaux at the end of the XVIIIth century.

Beautiful Album Amicorum of a young noble girl : Virginie de Guizelin (1795-1874). She was 17 years old at the beginning of the album. Virginie de Guizelin was a boarder in the educational house for girls of Madame Lorphelin,at 10 rue Boissy-d'Anglas in Paris (she gives a list of her classmates) : the French nobility received there the best possible education "an education of duchess" & Madame Lorphelin was then the rival of Madame Campan. The notebook contains several pencil or pen drawings and a watercolor representing her family's castle in Guînes (Pas-de-Calais), as well as testimonies of friendship from her fellow boarders or her friends, also mostly noble girls. IMPORTANT MANUSCRIPT OF MESMER'S APHORISMS "THIS PARAGRAPH IS THE RESULT OF MR. ALPHONSE'S OBSERVATIONS AT MESMER'S HOUSE MESMER, Aphorisms, [and comments on Mesmer], Manuscript. Circa 1800-1820. In-8, paperback, 32 p. Dimensions : 19 x 25 cm. Remarkable manuscript of Mesmer's Aphorisms : one finds variants in the details of certain passages as well as in the organization of the texts ; one also notes some comments & observations. The present manuscript testifies to the diffusion of Mesmer's teachings and practices in the years 1800-1820. The writer remains anonymous, but he is clearly a "practitioner" of magnetism: the aphorisms are indeed completed by a few short, unpublished personal remarks. One notes in particular p. 29, the intriguing formulation: "this paragraph is the result of M. Alphonse's observations at Mesmer's house". Beautiful bilingual Latin-Greek edition of the Apophthegmata of the ancients, modeled on the edition of the Apophthegmata of Erasmus, in an elegant typography by Henri Estienne. It draws heavily on Diogenes Laërce and Plutarch.
A first reader has carefully annotated the work : he was a scholar, contemporary of the edition & emblematic of the renewed taste of the Renaissance readers for apophthegms & quotations.
The second reader, probably in the course of the XVIIth century annotates the work to explain... that it should not be annotated! He calls the previous reader "a donkey and a fool (on the back of the title page) : "Advertes lector! quotquot Asteriscos in margine notatos videris… Leer más

This book has been printed at 26 copies, plus a few artist's proofs. All copies are numbered and signed on the colophon by Pierre MICHON & by the artist.Of a large format (30x40 cm), on a beautiful paper, and protected by an elegant slipcase. Thomas Ivernel composed his 6 etchings "in correspondence" of works of the writer Pierre Michon and in agreement with him. The texts were composed by hand in the workshop of the typographer Michael Caine in Paris. The engravings were printed by the "Ateliers Moret" workshop in Paris. Pierre Michon who was on the last Nobel list and one of the favorite of the bookmakers just won the BNF prize for all his work. Thomas Ivernel was born on October 3, 1970 into a family of actors. Important second edition in its first issue of De l'Esprit des Lois, printed in Paris by Prault, the only one to include the errata leaf (Tchemerzine IV, 930). A very rare copy with some annotations by a reader of the time, who completed his copy in the 1760s, with a dozen of notes of 2 to 5 lines each. These notes are mainly adding passages from the 1758 edition, which the reader points out. He also adds cross-references & sources. He adds for example (volume 2, p. 476): "The edition of 1758 adds here a short chapter on the adoption of germans, one gives there for example what Gontran did, when he adopted and declared major his nephew Childebert (volume 2, p. 476)".

First & rare Italian edition of this "tourist" guide presenting the treasures of the Christian archaeology of Rome. It gives an account of the "Tour of the Seven Churches", which was institutionalized from 1559.
The work was scrupulously annotated by an early seventeenth-century reader - perhaps on the occasion of a scholarly visit to Rome. Even if the binder's knife has considerably reduced the margins a thorough study allows us to understand the annotator's purpose. A very curious work by Giovanni Nevizzano, Italian jurisconsult, professor at the University of Turin & at the University of Padua, who died in 1540. It contains various curious - and deliberately misogynistic - considerations on women, virginity, marriage, procreation, domestic life, the couple... Névizan thus mixes satirical writing & phallocratic legal considerations. In particular, he argues ironically that God did not send all the evil angels to hell; but that he placed some of them in the bodies of women... with the sole purpose of tormenting the male sex! Georges Charpentier (1846 - 1905) was a publisher who became known as a champion of naturalist writers, especially Émile Zola, Alphonse Daudet, Gustave Flaubert, and Guy de Maupassant. He also promoted Impressionist painters. Eugène Fasquelle, the recipient of the letters, also a famous publisher, was at this time the associate of Charpentier – and soon his successor. In these letters it is frequently question of Zola, flagship author of the house. For example : "I am not of the opinion to publish the Soirées de Médan in fascicules. The title indicates moreover: "Supplément de différents morceaux détachées de l'histoire naturelle prises dans leuvre (sic) de Mr Pluche, et différente étude d'animaux tant quadrupède que (...) fait par moy daprès nature et autres composent 137 dessins". 26 drawings with annotations in front of each other. First edition of this new Latin translation of the Bible from Hebrew and Greek, by the Dominican Sante Pagnini.The very first edition of the Bible to propose a numbering of all the verses. Of primary importance, this edition, according to E. Kammerer, "served as a reference for all the translators of the Bible in Europe" .
This New Testament was extensively annotated in several campaigns, by a Calvinist reader of the years 1560-1570, very fine connoisseur of the Holy Scriptures in Latin and Greek.
