A Cologne, chez Jaques Kainkus, 1710. 12mo. Portrait. 3 leaves. 508 pages Full calf, ornate smooth spine, traces of blindstamped coat of arms on the boards (period binding somewhat restored). Utopian novel in which the hero, following a double shipwreck, discovers the island of Brustol and its social organization. The country is divided into equal, symmetrical cantons. Poverty is unknown, the inhabitants practice polygamy and strict equality reigns. It is the work of an intelligent and educated man" (translated from Lichtenberger). This edition, dated 1710, seems in reality to have been published in 1734 (cf. Rosenberg). A good copy. A Paris, chez Desaint et Saillant, et Durand, 1756. 8vo. Engraved portrait. VIII. 184 pages. 1 leaf. 10 out-of-text engraved plates. Full green morocco, ornate ribbed spine, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, edges painted red (contemporary binding). Original Edition of this famous epic poem composed of ten songs that tell the story of the discovery of "La Colombiade" by Christopher Columbus, the protagonist. It recounts his journey, his encounters with the inhabitants, the customs, the industries, the animals, the landscape and the battles that took place. It's the story of Christopher Columbus himself, in the form of a poem explaining the problems of financing, the adventures of the voyage, the discovery and part of the conquest. The publication of this work earned its author the praise of her most illustrious contemporaries: of Fontenelle, who called her his daughter; of Clairaut, who compared her to Madame du Châtelet; of La Condamine; of Voltaire who, receiving her in Ferney, went to meet… Leer más

Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1734. 4to. 40 pages. + 2 plates. Modern half leather, ancient style. First Edition of this work by Italian physicist and mathematician Giovanni Poleni (1683-1761). He held the chair of astronomy at Padua, and then that of mathematics upon the the death of Bernoulli (1719). He was a member of the Paris, London, Berlin and St. Petersburg Sciences Academies. In 1740 he founded the "Teatro di filosofia sperimentale", the first physics laboratory to open in an Italian university, where numerous scientific instruments were available for research and experimentation. He himself owned numerous scientific instruments, and he was the inventor of several machines, including a calculator in 1709. The book, awarded by the Paris Académie des Sciences, includes the description of a new device of his creation, designed to calculate the speed of a naval ship. It is illustrated with 2 folding plates. While the title appears in French, the text is written in Latin.

A Zurich, 1796. 8vo. 5 leaves. LV. 1 leaf. 127 pages. Green quarter-morocco, ornamented spine with nerves, upper edge gilt (Raparlier). Very rare First Edition of this philosophical-poetic essay on love, printed in only one hundred copies on vellum paper. In the essay on erotic poetry that precedes the poem announced in the title (pp. I-LV), the author argues for a return to nature in line with the principles of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Montesquieu to whom he refers several times. The poem is also followed by copious explanatory notes (pp.55-127). Nicolas Cammaille-Saint-Aubin (1770-1832) was a playwright and theatre actor in Paris. He left several theatre plays, often inspired by revolutionary ideals. Not in Quérard. Barbier, II, 545.

First performed at the Théâtre Le Bois Sacré in Brussels on September, 19th, 1916, "Morphinomanes" is a realistic drama that depicts a Parisian writer struggling with artificial paradises. Paris, Dentu, 1854. 2 parts in 1 volume, 8vo. XI. 140 pages. 148 pages. 4 out-of-text lithographs. Quarter-percaline (period binding). First Edition, illustrated with four beautiful two-tone lithographed plates, of the first French bullfighting manual. Inspired by the growing success of Spanish bullfighting among the French public, particularly in Paris, the author wanted to write a work specially intended for French "aficionados", explaining the ceremonies and different passes of bullfighting, explaining the most common terms, the most essential in these fights. The plates depict the spade pass ("entrada del toro a la vara"), the spear jump ("salto de la garrocha"), the banderillas half-turn ("banderillas a media vuelta") and the sword thrust ("estocada"). The work was printed in Bayonne by Lamaigne, and two editions are known to have appeared simultaneously, one with a Bayonne address, the other with a Paris address, as in this case. The author, who was administrator of the bishopric of Nicosia (Cyprus), had notably pleaded the cause of the Christians of Palestine with the sultan of Egypt and, having achieved nothing, declared himself in favor of a new crusade. Handsome woodcut on the title and a full-page leaf with 4 charming woodcuts depicting scenes of piety. 2). First Edition published in France, of this theological work on the Passion of Christ, composed by the Dutch theologian Antoine Broickwy de Koninckstein (1470-1541). Parisiis, apud Claudium Fremy, 1569. 8vo. 12 unnumbered leaves. 170 numbered leaves. 2 leaves. 55 numbered leaves. Brown calf, one fleuron in the center of plates, four on the corners (contemporary binding, some marks of ancient restoration). First Collected Edition of this very rare collection of two important pieces on the history of Africa and of early Catholic evangelization of this continent. First published in 1549, Saint Optat's "De Schismate Donatistarum", in which the Donatist schism was denounced for the first time, had a considerable impact in Africa. The text is regarded a forerunner of Saint Augustine, who drew his inspiration from Saint-Optat in many occasions. The second text is a history of the African Church since the Vandals' conquest, written by Bishop Victor de Vite, who was forced to leave his seat because of the persecution he suffered. Its first publication dates back to 1537. This edition is to be credited to the famous historian François Baudouin (1520-1573), who enriched it… Leer más

Descripción:
A Paris, chez Regnard, Pankouke et Duchesne, 1764. 12mo. 1 leaf. 113 pages. Half calf, smooth spine decorated (period binding restored). First Edition. This political project to combat begging, written in the form of a dialogue, was published at the same time as other works on the same subject (such as Turmeau de la Morandière's "Police sur les Mendians"). In addition to the original nature of its proposals, which included the imprisonment of beggars, its particularity lies in the fact that it was written by Sidoine Séguier de Saint-Brisson (1738-1773), a young cavalry captain who was one of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's most exalted disciples. Such was his adoration for the philosopher that he came to want to apply his precepts to the letter, and entered into a regular correspondence with Rousseau that more than once embarrassed the master in the face of his panegyrist's excessive zeal. "Among the works describing more effective forms of aid was a tract entitled Philopénès ("Friend of the Poor") that… Leer más
