Descripción:
Both volumes with general slight signs of use, evenly slightly browned (due to the quality of the paper), else in good condition.
Very rare, attractive set of this account on the expeditions to the Argentinian Patagonia by the German Scientific Society.
The work is the result of the collaboration of several authors as Sr. Alfredo Kölliker, Dr. Franz Kühn, Dr. Fritz Reichert, Adolfo Tomsen and Dr. Lutz Witte, with the prologue of Dr. Cristóbal M. Hicken and the artistic contribution of Prof. Juan Jörgensen.
The German Scientific Society came up with the project of "promoting the knowledge about the Argentinian Republic", which led to several explorations starting from the lesser known lands, such as the Cordillera Patagonica, the mountain system in the Patagonian region.
The first account on the expedition to the Cordillera Patagonica was published in 1915 in a German scientific journal. It was very obvious at that point that one single expedition wasn't enough, given the geographical and… Leer más

Descripción:
some defects to title-page, stains to white margin of first leaves, marginal ink stains to last leaves, overall a good copy in attractive binding.
Rare edition of this work by Paulus Aegineta, the only work by the author that survived. With a concise exposition of the information taken from the manuals of the major "masters of arts", he succeeded in enclosing in a book of modest size much of the medical knowledge of the Greco-Roman era.
The work contains a rather extensive discussion of topics divided as follows:
-the art of preserving health;
-treatise on fevers (or diseases of similar parts);
-internal ailments;
-external ailments;
-sores, bites, poisons;
-surgery;
-simple and compound medicines.
The topics covered are extremely summarized, but not for this reason unclear.
Paul of Aegina (Aegina, 625? - 690?) was a Byzantine physician. He represents the last important exponent of Greco-Roman medicine and is to be considered as the "bridge" between the latter and medieval medicine. The first… Leer más

Descripción:
Fully illustrated by 145 nice full-page copper engravings throughout the text; interesting provenance: Antonio Gambarotta manuscript ex libris on title-page.
Rare second edition (the first one published in 1627) of what is probably the least common work by Prospero Alpino, postumously published by his son Alpino Alpini.The author carefully studied the flora of Crete (information on plants from other areas was later incorporated into the manuscript, which was edited by his son Alpino and completed in 1614); data concerning some of these plants were obtained by examining specimens grown from seeds sent to Alpini, for a total of 156 plants, each illustrated by an engraving formed a notable contribution to Mediterranean floristics.
This is especially true of the flora of Crete: many of whose plants were described for the first time. The accuracy of Alpini's descriptions was demonstrated by A. Baldacci and P.A. Saccardo, who identified seventy-one of the eighty-five Cretan plants on which he reported.… Leer más

Descripción:
With 7 half-page woodcuts and one full-page woodcut of stills and other alchemical apparatus; margins of title very slightly frayed, some contemporary annotations, a very attractive, crispy copy in contemporary limp vellum.
Second edition of this compilation (first Strasbourg 1541), edited by Walther Ryff, and first edition published in Italy. Lull's alchemical works were published singularly and in collections; this work was printed as a separate edition.
The first part is a treatise on the quintessence (pp. 1-107), being a Lullian version of the De consideratione quintae essentiae of Joannes de Rupescissa (first printed in Venice, 1514). Although spurious, this treatise had enormous influence on the development of alchemy and is regarded as one of the most authoritative texts on the quinta essentia. "Although Lull himself was opposed to alchemy ... his methods had obvious applications in the alchemical field - and they were so applied in a host of pseudo-Lullian alchemical works, most of them… Leer más

Descripción:
7 sheets, etched and engraved; titles in Latin and Spanish to bottom margins, numbered in Roman numerals to left of bottom margins; some stains throughout, plate number IV marginally foxed, plate number VI with a restored rip starting from bottom white margin affecting plate; evenly slightly browned.
Complete suite of seven engravings depicting the seven corporal works of Mercy: I visiting the sick; II feeding the hungry; III quenching the thirsty; IV dressing the naked; V giving asylum to the pilgrims; VI taking care of the prisoners; VII burying the dead.
It was Giorgio Marini who assigned the work to the hand of Volpato who executed it for Remondini in 1768. In the Remondini Catalogue the series is part of the vast assortment of "Royal Folio Prints", the double title in Latin and Spanish declares that it was intended for export to Spain and the Spanish colonies, for educational purposes.
Giovanni Volpato was an Italian engraver (Bassano del Grappa 1740 - Rome 1803). Formed in the environment of… Leer más

Descripción:
One box (350 x 230 x 90 mm) and 32 booklets; the angles of the box are slightly worn, the overall coditions of the box and the collection are very good, considering the great fragility of these thin booklets and the scarcity of such an item.
Rare 118th century box entirely hand-painted in powder blue, with floral decorations in dark green, blue and antique pink on the sides.
The lid is also powder blue, but with a big rectangular straw-yellow shape in the middle, framed by the same floral decorations used on the sides. The booklets vary in dimensions and topics: most of them are religious themed, although among them can be found works of poetry, plays, and comedies composed for aristocratic weddings as well as annual accounts and political reviews, each one published in Italy during the 18th century.
The most interesting aspect of these pamphlets is in fact the paper they are bound in; the collection shows a wide range of 18th century decorative papers that vary in colours, patterns and thickness.… Leer más

Missing plate 54, plates 55 and 57 are loose and apparently come from another copy with thinner margins, very slight spots and foxing throughout especially to first leaves and last one leaf, slight large waterstain from the top, else a clean large copy in good condition.
A spectacular, majestic work illustrating the magnificent decorations of the walls and the pavements discovered in Pompeii and Herculaneum, that required the collaboration of many artists.
At page 6 there's a large engraved vignette illustrating the eruption of the Vesuvius with the inscription "Eruzione del Vesuvio 8 Agosto 1779 (Eruption of the Vesuvius 8th of August 1779)" engraved by Francesco Giomignani, after a painting by Pietro Fabris; the index lists all the plates present in the work: 67 plates for the ornati delle pareti (ornaments of the walls) and 46 for the pavimenti mosaicati (mosaic pavements).
Among the draughtsmen involved in the production are: Vincenzo Campana, Giovanni and Domenico Casanova, Giuseppe… Leer más

Great provenance: Abenperg-Traun Coat of Arms to both plates; minor defects to the spine, inside light browning to some leaves, very light waterstains to some leaves (below), one leaf repaired, else in good condition.
Two works by Fortunio Liceti bound together.
The extremely rare first edition of De novis astris containing possibly the earliest published illustration of the rings of Saturn and the first edition of the Controversiae De Cometarum.
Galileo observed the rings of Saturn for the first time in 1610, as reported in a lettered he wrote dated 30 July 1610; and he was surprised when in December 1612 he couldn't see the rings anymore.
In his Saggiatore of 1623, at page 217, Galileo reports how in 1616 he was able to observe Saturn in another shape; he had also sent a letter to Liceti describing his discoveries in 1617, and Liceti published these discoveries, along with Galileo's illustration, in this present work. This illustration can be found in the second part of the book, with a sectional… Leer más
