In Thursday s Child, Eartha Kitt recalls her poor childhood and early career as a performer whose trademark highly mannered singing style, colored with gargling growl added to her sultry brilliance as a distinctive singer and actress (New York Times). With 28 photographic images. A near-fine copy in a bright price-clipped dustwrapper with a stunning image of Kitt on the cover whch displays nicely.

In the uncommon original color illustrated dust jacket which is near fine with some shallow wear at the spine extremities and some rubbing along the flap folds and a small chip at the heel of the spine bottom. Novelization of the 1927 Paramount Pictures movie that was the winner of the first Academy Award for Best Picture. Hardcover in sky blue cloth stamped in black. Illustrated with scenes from the film starring Clara Bow and Charles "Buddy" Rogers and Richard Arlen. A real nice copy.

Publisher's boards, 40pp. 7.25 x 10.25. A retrospective on the career of D.W. Griffith was held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City in 1940. Only 8,000 copies were printed by MOMA s board of trustees in November 1940. Griffith was still alive at the time of this exhibit, but I don t know if he attended or not. This book is still in presentable condition and is illustrated throughout with photos from all of his Masterworks. An attractive copy now protected in a glossy acid-free mylar.

Contains press photos and press release letter on publisher s letterhead promoting the book. Press copies are quite scarce.

First edition. Fine in fine dustwrapper. A superior copy, the white jacket is in much nicer than usual condition.The novel is often described as Kafkaesque, but Nabokov claimed that at the time he wrote the book, he was unfamiliar with German and "completely ignorant" of Franz Kafka's work. Nabokov interrupted his work on The Gift in order to write Invitation to a Beheading, describing the creation of the first draft as "one fortnight of wonderful excitement and sustained inspiration." Some scholars have argued that the central plot of Invitation to a Beheading has its roots in Chernyshevski, a character from The Gift. Another view is that the novel functions as a roman à clef with the Platonic Socrates as its target.While Nabokov stated in an interview that of all his novels, he held the greatest affection for Lolita, it was for Invitation to a Beheading that he held the greatest "esteem".

[8], 277 pp. A very pleasing copy, gilt and cloth bright, only light age evidence with slight rubbing to the tips and spine ends and slight bowing of the binding. Uncut with pages largely unopened with no previous ownership signatures.

Tarkington's classic novel of small-town American social anxiety and romantic awkwardness, winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1922, and wonderfully filmed by George Steven's (with Katherine Hepburn) in 1935. This reprint, issued to coincide with the release of the film, has beautiful (uncredited) jacket art depicting Hepburn in a front porch swing, although the book itself, alas, contains no illustrations from the movie. (The heyday of the original "Photoplay Editions," most of which contained either four or eight stills, was over by the mid-1930s.)

A film tie-in edition of Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlett Letter (1926) starring Lilian Gish and directed by Victor Seastrom. A book that s usually found without the rare colorful jacket - especially in this condition. I ve coupled it with an original vintage promotional photo of Gish from the film. The original first edition of this work was first published in 1850 and has enjoyed many stage and film adaptations over the past 170 years. The Gish/Seastrom collaboration was the first feature film version of Hawthorne s work. This was part of a film deal MGM s Irving Thalberg had given Lillian Gish which gave her unprecedented control (especially for a woman) of the production as she chose the screenwriter, Director and male lead. Gish decided to forgo part of her salary for greater artistic control but still ended up being paid something like $800,000 per film at MGM - an insane amount in the mid 1920s and only later matched by Greta Garbo in the 1930s. An attractive purchase for any cinema fan.

12mo, 127pp. A very good hardback copy in a price-clipped dust jacket with two small, closed tears and minor soil stain on at the bottom of the book and dust wrapper, else an attractive copy of an uncommon book. The six chapters of this book are the Reith Lectures given over the home service of the British Broadcasting Corporation in November and December 1953. They are printed essentially as broadcast. Dr. Oppenheimer added the two appendices. In the first appendix he collected the texts from which brief quotation was made in the lectures. The second appendix is a brief and informal bibliography on atomic theory and its interpretation.

In 1980, MOMA in NYC did a tribute to Lillian Gish. There were large format (8.5 x 11) programs sold in limited numbers (this particular one is signed on the cover by Gish) in which this copy belonged to Citizen Kane actress Ruth Warrick. The 40 year old program is still in presentable condition and has quite a few nice photos. A nice item with nice provenance.

First edition, first printing, of one of the first and most influential works issued by the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), with over 40 songs & over 50 photographic illustrations, many by Danny Lyon, whose powerful images of young black activists and ordinary men and women affirm that "every person in the ranks of the movement had already achieved a revolution." Issued by the SNCC the same year as the March on Washington.

This original text from Theosophical Society President Annie Besant consisting of a description of the mystical unity behind world religions and the path to awakening the individual to higher realities. Comparing Hinduism, Christianity, and Sufi Islam, Besant places Theosophy s own interest in Ascended Masters in the context of Yogic studies and the possibility of union with divinity.

FIRST EDITION Large quarto, 506pp. (6), Publisher's decorative green cloth with gilt stamped covers and spine. A clean partly unopened near-fine copy with lots of illustrations. Coffin (1823-96) was one of the best-known newspaper correspondents of the American Civil War. He has been called "the Ernie Pyle of his era," and a biographer, W.E. Griffis, referred to him as "a soldier of the pen and knight of the truth. Charles Carleton Coffin was not only well-known to many U.S. political and military leaders, but to many noted U.S. writers and to a large number of foreign dignitaries. (Wikipedia). These series of books about exploits in the civil war, written two decades after the war, was Coffin's attempt to refine and consolidate his impressions of the early days of the war and was third in the series. The volumes which preceded this one were: Marching to Victory (1888) and Redeeming the Republic (1889). This final volume was published in 1891.

Some browning but a fine copy in a clipped Near Fine wrapper with a few small nicks, particularly at spine ends. A fresh copy showing no previous signs of ownership. The Tarner lectures for 1938. Dust-wrapper is now protected in a Mylar sleeve.

A very good copy, handsomely bound. Frontispiece based on the famous engraved title page to the 1628 edition, here redrawn and engraved "expressly for this edition" by C. Freeman. A handsomely bound copy of Burton's great book, first published in 1621. "The Anatomy, as its publishing history shows, was one of the most popular books of the seventeenth century. All the learning of the age as well as its humor - and its pedantry - are there. It has something in common with Brant's Ship of Fools, Erasmus's Praise of Folly, and More's Utopia, with Rabelais and Montaigne and like all these it exercised a considerable influence on the thought of the time. Translated from the 4th German edition of a work, drawn in part from a lecture given before the Silesian Society by the German physiologist Rudolf Peter Heinrich Heidenhain (1834 1897). A nice copy of a rare book on the subject. Uncommon.

The rear Staples, as expected, have rusted so the rear cover was restapled, but no other restoration. Overall in very good condition with some small tears on the front and rear covers.
