South Mountain, Pennsylvania, 1945. Unbound. Very good. These five cards show the the South Mountain Sanitorium's doctors' residence, nurses, residence, women's dormitory, men's dormitory Unit 8, and men's dormitory Unit 15. . The sanitorium movement began in Europe, and the first was established in the United States at Asheville, North Carolina in 1875. The movement exploded in the 1880s when Dr. Edward Livingstone Trudeau of the Adirondack Cottage Sanatorium at Saranac Lake realized that patients symptoms improved (or at least did not worsen) with exposure to fresh air, and the number of sanitation beds in the United states grew from 4,500 in 1900 to over 675,00 in 1925. Treatment consisted of bed rest, exposure to fresh air, walking exercises, and occupational therapy like weaving, basketry, and leather work. The movement ended in the 1950s when streptomycin, isoniazid, and pyrazinamide became readily available to treat the disease. The words sanatorium and sanitarium and be used… Leer más

Leipzig, Berline, & New York: Americhrome, no date. Message on reverse; some soiling "Quarantine station La Boca, Panama." No publication data. "Quarantine Station, Naos Island, Panama." No publication data. Message on reverse. . Ships transiting the canal were required to undergo a health inspection. Although by the mid-1920s, most concerns had been eliminated, the major concern with regard to ships transiting the canal came from Bucaramanga and the interior of Columbia (Yellow Fever) and Plague from the west coast of South America. When necessary, ships were fumigated with cyanogen chloride gas. (For more information, see the Report of the Health Department of the Panama Canal for the Calendar Year 1923, available online.) .

Descripción:
Wychwood, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, 1935. Envelope or Cover. Very good. This postal cover was sent by airmail from Wychwood, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin to the S.S. Manhattan at New York's Staten Island quarantine station. It is franked with two stamps, a 1-cent green Franklin stamp (Scott Type A155) and a 5-cent Beacon airmail stamp (Scott #C11) both tied to the envelope by a Lake Geneva postmark dated 17 March 1935. A "Sent To Ship / At Quarantine" handstamp dated 21 March 1935 is on the reverse. There are several "Airmail" hand stamps on the front along with an erroneous typed annotation "First Flight from SS Manhattan." No airmail flights were ever conducted from the ship; this "First Flight" annotation was probably added later by a philatelist either in ignorance or a misguided attempt to increase the cover's value. Quarantine practices continued in the 1930s as a general safety precaution, although there were no epidemic diseases posing an immediate threat to the United States. That said,… Leer más

Washinington, DC, 1937. Unbound. Very good. One-page handbill (approximately 9" x 11.5") formatted to appear like a page from the Congressional Record. Storage folds, some beginning to split at the margin. Clean with some light toning. This handbill provides the text of Jenckes's speech in the House of Representatives on 6 December 1937 advocating for a Union Shop to be imposed upon the Woodward & Lothrop Department Store in Washington, DC in lieu of the long-established Company Union that represented its workers. In the speech, she additionally complained that Painter's Union No. 368, who wished to represent the workers, was unable to get newspaper coverage because Woodies was one of the largest advertising buyers in the District. Jenckes was the first female from Indiana to serve in the U.S. House of Representative. She was elected to the position in 1933 and held the position until she was defeated for re-election in 1938. Descripción:
Mainz, Germany: Johann Schoeffer, 1533. Disbound. Very good. The History of Rome, originally titled Annales, and often referred to as Ab Urbe Condita (From the Founding of the City) is a monumental history of ancient Rome, written in Latin between 27 and 9 BC by the Roman historian Titus Livius (Livy). The work covers the period from the legends concerning the arrival of Aeneas and the refugees from the fall of Troy, to the city's founding in 753 BC, the expulsion of the Kings in 509 BC, and down to Livy's own time, during the reign of the emperor Augustus. This leaf (8" x 11½") discusses the conflicts between Rome, Carthage, and Macedon during the Punic and Macedonian Wars of the Third Century BC. It is from a version published in Mainz by Johann Schoeffer in 1533. It features a large illustration titled,"Wie die statt Abydos von dem konig Philippo gewunnen und jamerlich zerstort ward ("How the city of Abydos was won by King Philippo and miserably destroyed") which showings Macedonian… Leer más

Death Valley, California, 1950. Very good. This lot consists of a one-page letter from the National Park Service at Death Valley National Monument, dated 17 February 1950, and two photographs of graffiti that read, "J W ADE". The letter is signed L. F. Kellar, "Death Valley National Monument Park Naturalist" L. F. Keller. The photographs were mounted on a piece of bond paper with cello tape that has discolored over time. The letter reads in part: "On February 16, 1950, Mr. C. E. Choucher . . . directed us to the site in Greenwater Canyon where he located last week an inscription which he reported as 'C Wade'. "The inscription was 'J Wade' located 1.4 mile northeast of the petroglyphs and 6.9 miles southwest of the Lila C. Mine on a great vertical volcanic breccia 50 feet west of the road. . .. "The inscription seems to be old and could antedate 100 years. The letters are chiseled ¼ to ½ inches deep in the volcanic breccia, 6 inches height, and the entire name is 24 inches long. . .. Lake Charles, Louisiana, 1907. Unbound. Very good.
This two-page letter from Hig to Jim is datelined "Lake Charles La 4-28,07". In nice shape. A transcript will be provided.
In the letter, Hig (possibly a traveling salesman) advises his old friend Jim to hold on to stock he owns controlling some property in Louisiana's "Orange Land".
"When I first came here I made a drive over pt. of the 'Orange Lands.' The most of it is good rice land, and rice land is on a boom. The Beaumont Oil boom is extended into this country: possibly there is oil under the orange land, if so and it is found the land will be worth a good deal. From what I know . . . I do not think it has any present value. The land is encumbered for all it is worth. I do not think you can sell the stock for 1.00 a share. If it was mine I would keep it for 'futures', for two reasons: one is because you will have to, and another is by a turn of a card it may be worth 100 - Aya! 1000. etc. on the dollar. . .. Now Jim don't misunderstand me. I do… Leer más

Descripción:
Venice, Italy: Luca-Antonia Giunta, 1532. Disbound. Very good. This leaf from a Book of Hours was printed in 1523 by the famous Florentine printer, Luca-Antonia Giunta. Its pages are adorned with vignettes, borders, decorations, lines, majescules, etc. in an effort to make appear much like a manuscript document. He constructed his borders from smaller sections which were set into the printing forme along with the type. This allowed them to be mixed and matched economically throughout the book to vary the decorations and make them appear unique. This leaf, which measures 4" x 6" was printed in red and black. It is titled "Septe psalmi penititetutes (Seven Penitential Psalms or Seven Psalms of Confession)" and features a large majuscule "D" illustrated with the image of King David. It begins with the first of the Penitential Psalms, Psalms 6, which is traditionally attributed to King David, and is part of the Jewish, Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, and other Protestant liturgies. Paris: Chez G Boun, 1585. Unbound. Very good. This leaf (M.CLXXVI-M.CLXXVII) measures approximately 8.25" x 12.5" and came from the 1585 printing of Les Oeuvres d'Ambroise . . . Des Distillations. The images are strong. The leaf has some minor soiling and edge-wear. The image on this leaf shows (roughly translated from Paré's French) a group of men stripping and transporting the inner bark of cinnamon trees. Paré, the French royal surgeon for many years, was the preeminent surgeon of his time and is considered one of the fathers of surgery and modern forensic pathology as well as a pioneer of surgical techniques, battlefield medicine, and prosthetic design. He additionally had a scholarly interest in natural history, especially reports of "miraculous" or "monstrous" creatures and malformed births.
