Paris: Paris, Chez Antoine Dezallier, 1690, 1690. First Edition. 12mo. First edition. xxv,(2),615,(1)pp.Bound in contemporary calf. 405J Baillet was, from 1680 to his death, librarian to M. de Lamoignon, advocat-general to the parlement of Paris, of whose library he produced a manuscript catalogue raisonné in 35 folio volumes. It seems ironic that one should need to cosult Barbier to discover the author of this pioneering work, but the effort is rewarding, for here we read that - Cet ouvrage [était] le premier publié en France sur ce genre de recherches bibliographiques. The subject is approached from various angles, the psychology of pseudonymity, the various types of cognomes etc. This was a preliminary treatise, which should have been followed by a Recueil des Auteurs Déguisés but unfortunately the author died in 1706 leaving his work unfinished, and it was not for another 100 years, with the publication of Barbier's Dictionnaire des Ouvrages Anonymes in 1806, that the project was finally…

London: Printed by M. Clark, for Samuel Mearne, in Little Britain, John Martyn, in St. Pauls Church-yard, and Henry Herringman, in the New Exchange, 1680. Twelfth edition. Octavo;A6, B-Z8, Aa-Bb8, Cc3, [Cc4]; lacks the final blank leaf. This copy is bound in original boards, recently rebacked. [Bacon's] Essays, the fruits of his political and social observations, were first published in 1597, enlarged in 1612, and again in 1625. His long attempt to reform the intellectual habits of the European mind began with the publication of The Advancement of Learning in 1605, which attacked the unprofitable scholasticism that inhibited the growth of knowledge and the mental prejudices that helped to keep men in ignorance. Above all he deplored the poor and confused state of knowledge about the operations of the natural world. Novum Organum, begun about 1608, published 1620, called for a systematic study of the natural world and of the causes of things, and proposed the inductive method as the most reliable…

Nürmberg: Gabriel Hein, 1553. Quarto 7 X 5 inches A-K4 This is a disbound pamphlet. Weigand of Redwitz became a canon in Bamberg in 1490. He made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. In 1520, he was the senior pastor of Kronach. Among his congregation was the reformer Johannes Grau, who had to flee to Wittenberg after he married the daughter of a citizen of Kronach. During his time as bishop, Weigand acted against Luther's followers and removed Lutheran clergy from office. However, under the restraining influence of his veteran advisor John of Schwarzenberg, he was less redical than some of the people who had elected him would have liked. At the time Weigand was appointed bishop, Adrian VI was Pope and Charles V was Emperor. During his reign, the Peasants' War raged in the area. Over 70 manors and several monasteries were destroyed. Weigand attempted to resolve the conflict diplomatically. When military intervention appeared unavoidable, he turned to the Swabian League. The cathedral chapter also favoured…

London: Apud Radulphum Nuberie, ex assignatione Henrici Bynneman Typographi, 1582, 1580. Second. The 1580 publication of Ockland's 'Anglorum Prælia,' a Latin historical poem, brought Ockland into public notice, as the book was appointed by Queen Elizabeth and her privy council to be received and taught in every grammar and free school within the kingdom The work is an hexameter poem, the meter used in classical poetry for heroic subjects An early hand records on the flyleaf: "containing the highest Panegyric on Queen Elizabeth's character and Government Was enjoined by Authority to be taught as a classic author in Grammar School This was a matchless contrivance to imprint a sense of loyalty on the minds of the people" The DNB adds that the the teaching of Ockland was intended "for the removing of such lascivious poets as are commonly reade and taught in the saide grammer schools" The second edition of Ockland's work, printed two years after the first, contains Ockland's EIPHNAPXIA, Alexander…

The first work of Etherege was The Comical Revenge, or Love in a Tub. It was published in 1664 and may have been produced for the first time late in the previous year. This comedy was an immediate success and Etherege found himself, in a night, famous. Thus introduced to the wits and the fops of the town, Etherege took his place in the select and dissolute circle of Rochester, Dorset and Sedley. On one occasion, at Epsom, after tossing in a blanket certain fiddlers who refused to play, Rochester, Etherege and other boon companions so…

The attribution first appears, in Brice Harris's facsimile of this edition printed in 1961. The work itself is written as a dialogue between Jovial and Pensive who have visited London and wish to return to the country. Jovial's cousin, Sociable, enjoys the London social whirl. They argue about the various pleasures of the city versus the country. Dryden is discussed at one point: "the company of the author of Absalom and Achitophel is more valuable, tho' not so talkative, than that of the modern men of banter; for what he says, is like what he writes;…
