Descripción:
1971. London and New York: Frederick Warne, (1971). Original white cloth pictorially decorated in color, with matching dust jacket. First Edition, published 28 years after the author / illustrator's death. The Foreword by Leslie Linder explains that Potter wrote this in 1906, and the plan was for it to be a third title in panoramic (or concertina) form -- after FIERCE BAD RABBIT and MISS MOPPET. But the booksellers complained that they were having trouble re-folding those books after people perused them, and SLY OLD CAT was put off numerous times over the subsequent years. It involves a cat who invites a rat to a tea-party -- the latter of whom fears he might be intended as dessert. This is a fine copy in a fine jacket. See Linder p. 434 (SLY OLD CAT was published in the same year as the Linder bibliography).

Descripción:
1913. With Twenty-Four [Photographic] Illustrations and a Map. London: Methuen & Co., (1913). 32 pp ads Dated July 1912. Original blue-green cloth. First Edition of this early account of traveling through the Lake District by way of that new-fangled contraption, the motorcar. Fourteen sightseeing routes are described in detail -- including the gradient of the steeper climbs, since not all motorcars could handle them. Except for some fading of the spine, this is a fine copy. Provenance: "Brackenburn" bookplate of Hugh Walpole -- though with the additional typed slip "From Hugh Walpole's Library, with his Bookplate" -- which, though Walpole did know Abraham, indicates the involvement of the not-always-reliable bookseller D. Arnold Varty (see Charles Nugent's monograph on this matter in the Autumn 2021 Hugh Walpole Review).

Descripción:
1908. Private Correspondence. Edited by George Pierce Baker. Boston: The Bibliophile Society, 1908. Original grey paper boards with parchment spine and corners, in original two-piece slipcase with spine label. First Edition, limited to 493 copies for Bibliophile Society members only (preceding the so-called "Bixby Edition" of the same year). Maria Beadnell, the first love of the young Charles Dickens during the years 1830-1833 (her father prevented the match), became the model for Dora in DAVID COPPERFIELD; in 1855 she contacted him and they secretly met without their spouses, but Dickens, surprised at how much she had changed, subsequently based the less-than-flattering Flora Finching of LITTLE DORRIT upon her. This is an as-new copy, in the original two-part slipcase (which has some wear at one corner). Podeschi D164.

1895. With Photogravure Frontispiece by S. W. van Schaick. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1895. 12 pp undated ads. Original dark blue cloth decorated in silver and gilt. First American Edition of this collection of eight loosely-connected tales of adventure ("Count Antonio and the Wizard's Drug," "Count Antonio and the Sacred Bones," etc.). This American Edition is highly sought for its imaginative binding: the hilt of a dagger appears to be coming out of the front cover, while its blade emerges from the rear cover. This copy is in fine condition.

Descripción:
1871. Or, The Adventures of a Young Gentleman in Search of a Religion. By Mr. Benjamins (Bret Harte...). London: John Camden Hotten, n.d. [1871]. 2 pp preliminary ads plus 8 pp terminal ads dated "for 1872." Original glazed printed wrappers. First Separate Edition of this parody of Benjamin Disraeli's 1870 novel LOTHAIR. It was in 1871 that the new edition of Harte's CONDENSED NOVELS came out in the U.S., which added two new parodies (including this one) to the fifteen that had appeared in the original 1867 edition. Blanck (citing Kozlay) notes three states of this book, and this copy does not quite equate with any of the three: the inside front wrapper lists "The New Books of Humour" (not cited at all by Blanck, though it could be his State 2); the outside rear wrapper promotes Bryant & May's Patent Safety Matches (as in Blanck's State 3). This copy is in good-to-very good condition, which is not bad for such a fragile, ephemeral piece: the spine wrapper is mostly perished, and there is other… Leer más

1938. Yesterday, To-Day, and Tomorrow. By Lord Tweedsmuir. Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen: Church of Scotland Committee on Publications, (1938). Original orange wrappers. First Edition with this title. Buchan delivered this address in June 1937 to the General Council of the Alliance of Reformed Churches, right after which it was issued as a wrapper-less leaflet that did not have a title (perhaps it was distributed only to attendees?). The following year the Church of Scotland issued this more formal publication, for the general public. This is a fine copy of this delicate (and rather uncommon) piece. See Blanchard A119.

1935. Told for Children by Russell Thorndike. London & New York: Raphael Tuck & Sons, n.d.[1930s?]. Original color pictorial wrappers. Each of these is a pocket-sized abridgement, for children, of a Charles Dickens novel or character -- condensed into a booklet of just 16 leaves (the title page is on the inside rear cover, there are six full-page illustrations, and the final page 33 is on the inside rear cover -- so the text occupies only 27 pages). The front and rear cover have the same color illustration. A little light foxing, but all three are in fine condition. Housed together in a simple hard-board folder with typed label.

1866. being A Narrative of Certain Events in the Life of an Orthodox Minister of Connecticut. By the Author of "My Farm of Edgewood." In Two Volumes. New York: Charles Scribner and Company, 1866. Original green cloth. First Edition of this "delicate and leisurely story of New England village life in the early 19th century, concerned with the contrast between the rigid Calvinism of Connecticut and the external influence of Catholicism through two French women characters" [OCAL]. This copy is in Blanck's "binding B" (no priority), with a fillet-and-leaf design rather than a triple gilt rule at top and bottom of spine. Curiously the author's name appears on the spines, but not on the title pages. This is a remarkably fine set (corner of one endpaper chipped away). Blanck 13943.
