Descripción:
London: Cassell and Company Ltd., 1947. First edition, twelfth and final printing. Hardcover. This is a jacketed British first edition, final printing, of the first volume of Winston S. Churchill's famous war speeches. Into Battle contains Churchill’s speeches from May 1938, when Churchill was still out of favor and out of power, to November 1940, six months after Churchill became wartime Prime Minister. Between 1941 and 1946, Churchill's war speeches were published in seven individual volumes. The British first editions are visually striking, but were printed on cheap “War Economy Standard” paper, bound in coarse cloth, and wrapped in bright, fragile dust jackets. They proved highly susceptible to spotting, soiling, and fading, so the passage of time has been hard on most surviving first editions. In this first war speeches volume the great battle of the twentieth century and Churchill's life begins. There were twelve printings of this edition. This twelfth and final printing was issued in May… Leer más

London: P.A. Reuter Photos Ltd., 1 September 1959. Photograph. This original press photo shows Lady Clementine Churchill wearing an eye patch following an operation for paralysis of the eyelid. This image measures 12 x 9.25 in (30.5 x 23.5 cm) on matte photo paper. Condition is good plus. The paper is trimmed slightly irregularly on the right side and has some edge wear, bruised corners, original crop markings, and some fingerprints and scratches at the top edge that appear to be original to the photo’s developing out. This image features original, hand-applied retouching to Lady Churchill’s face, hair, and clothes. The verso bears double copyright stamps of “P.A.-Reuter Photos Ltd.”, a published stamp of The Daily Telegraph from 1 September 1959, remnants of a typed caption, handwritten printing notations, and a clipping of the caption as it was printed in the newspaper. The original clipping caption reads: “LADY CHURCHILL, wearing a large patch over her right eye, returning to the Queen… Leer más

Descripción:
London: Heinemann & Zsolnay, Ltd., 1943. First French language edition. Paperback. This is the first French language edition of the second volume of Churchill's war speeches. The Unrelenting Struggle was published in England in 1942 with this French edition – La Lutte Sans Relache – following in 1943. The volume contains 72 speeches, broadcasts, and messages to Parliament from November 1940 to the end of 1941, some of the darkest and most uncertain days of the war. As dark and uncertain as these days were for the British, they were arguable worse for the French, whose spectacularly swift capitulation early in the war left their nation under Nazi suzerainty. Owing to the Nazi dominion over France, this first French language edition was published in London. It was issued as an attractive wraps edition, the thin card covers printed in appropriate tricolor blue, red, and white. This copy is in good plus condition, sound and complete and seemingly unread, despite some superficial wear and soiling. The… Leer más

Johannesburg: Constantia, 1950. First edition. Hardcover. Elisabeth Eybers (1915-2007) was a South African poet. Her first volume of poetry was published in 1934. In 1943, she became the first Afrikaans woman to win the Hertzog Prize, the most prestigious award in Afrikaans literature. This volume, featuring verse in Afrikaans, is bound in illustrated brown cloth. It is one of a thousand first edition copies. Condition is very good in a very good dust jacket. The binding is clean and bright with trivial corner bumps and a bit of old paper fibre adhering near the head of the spine (corresponding to a moisture stain that shows on the text block and dust jacket). The contents are tight, clean, and free of spotting or inscriptions, but slightly age-toned and with a small moisture stain permeating the top left of the text block. The illustrated dust jacket is bright, clean, and complete, but showing a slightly larger triangular moisture stain than the text block, which extends from the top of the… Leer más

London: Mills & Boon, Limited, 1927. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is the first edition, first printing of an early biography of Churchill that concludes during his service as Chancellor of the Exchequer. It provides an interesting view of Churchill in mid-career. Condition is good. The navy cloth binding is tight with unfaded color and bright gilt on the front cover and spine. The binding shows some wear and scuffing, including bumps to the lower corners, wear to the bottom edges, joints, and spine ends, and a mild forward lean. The contents show mild age-toning. We find no previous ownership marks and trivial spotting appears confined to the prelims. "Certainly no Party of which he is a member - be it a political Party or a dinner-party - ever lacks the spur of his stimulating personality. Age, if he ever grows old - which seems extremely doubtful - must mellow him... He no longer takes himself with such preternatural seriousness as in earlier years, but he is taken far more… Leer más

London: Punch, 1953. This original printed appearance of a Punch cartoon featuring Winston S. Churchill comes from the personal collection of Gary L. Stiles, author of Churchill in Punch (Unicorn Publishing Group, 2022). His book is the first ever effort to definitively catalog, describe, and contextualize all of the many Punch cartoons featuring Churchill. This cartoon appeared thus on p.386 of the 25 March 1953 issue of Punch. The artist is Norman Mansbridge. Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden had returned from Washington, where he had agreed to consult with America on mutual economic needs and international decisions - always anxious about being undercut by Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill, whose larger than life presence eclipsed and infringed upon Eden, his interminably-delayed heir apparent. Hence this cartoon, featuring Eden anxious on the stage, fumbling to pull things out of the hat labeled "ANGLO-AMERICAN TALKS", looking over his shoulder at Churchill, who peers and puffs his cigar from… Leer más

Descripción:
London?. Pamphlet. This undated, unattributed booklet contains 315 tongue twisters. The cover illustration of a boy and girl wearing “H.M.S.” caps leads us to conclude that this is a British wartime publication intended for children. We surmise that this may be one of the many small format books produced to entertain and comfort children during the air raids of the Blitz. We find no copies in WorldCat or COPAC. Condition of this wire stitched pamphlet measuring 5.5 x 3.75 inch (14 x 11 cm) is very good with clean textured paper covers and bright, clean contents free of spotting and markings. The lower corner is bumped, affecting the contents. We note that the top edge is cut at an angle which appears to be original to the publication.

This cartoon titled "WINSOME WINNIE.” appeared thus on p.160 of the 28 February 1912 issue of Punch. The artist is Edward Tennyson Reed. At the time, Winston had just lent support to a peace mission to Berlin headed by Minister of War Richard Haldane. The mission failed when Germany demanded that in exchange for building fewer warships, Britain must promise to remain neutral if Germany was in engaged in any war in which it was not the aggressor. The explanation offered for the cartoon is "Winsome Winston since he genially backed up the War Minister's mission of peace to Berlin by describing the German Fleet as a luxury, a sort of extra glass of… Leer más

The artist is unknown. After being Leader of the Opposition since July 1945, Churchill finally returned to the premiership in October 1951. His second and final premiership would end with his retirement on 5 April 1955. Churchill's Second World War speeches. Condition is good. The blue cloth binding is tight, clean, and unfaded with bright spine gilt.
