Copy #13 of 100 numbered copies signed by author of this special edition issued for sponsors of the Poets' Theatre, with a color frontispiece by Gardner Cox. A very good copy in original black wraps with white printed label (spine faded, slight staining to label). Noted American poet William Matchett's copy, with his inscription on half title. Phelps and Matchett were both principals at the Poets' Theatre. This moving three-act verse play is based on the atmosphere prevalent during the Salem witch days of Puritan New England. It tells the story of family happiness destroyed by the panic of the community.

First editions of these very scarce China Inland Mission periodicals published for supporters, and as fundraiser during the 1920s for the noted interdenominational missionary society, originally founded by Hudson Taylor in 1865. The 1920s were a period of great unrest, famine, and ongoing conflicts between various warlords, as reflected in these contemporary missionary accounts. The China Inland Mission actively recruited women missionaries, who in turn often proselytized to Chinese women to promote Christianity, public health measures, increased education, and more. Lyon Phelps, 1954. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. A GREAT PRESENTATION COPY, signed and inscribed by author on letterhead of The Poet's Theatre at front to William Matchett (Secretary of the Theatre) and his wife: 'For Bill and Judy, whose affection and collaboration have gone into the lines of this playf this copy, more than I am able to admit, this first copy. Lyon. At Cambridge, in Massacusetts, May, 1954.' The text of this first copy, pruduced nine months before the play was to debut, is mostly mimeographed with a few typed leaves, and has ink and pencil corrections in the author's hand. Laid in loose is a 3 x 5 inch card with an original poem by Phelps abouit the Matchetts, signed and inscribed Christmas, 1962. [7],119,[3] leaves printed (or typed) recto only. This unique copy has a superb presentation inscription from the author, 'For Billy [William Matchett] - this copy: not the first, but it should be not the last, but I wish it were so, lest it be thought the middle. Let me add for one who received the MS after dealing with the thing itself the print of play or poem is after the fact - Love Lyon.' In addition, there i a marked-out section of text at pages 51/52, and inserted loose to replace it are two typed pages of a substantially larger replacement text, inscribed in ink by Lyon at end.
