Original cloth backed boards, decorated in silver, green and black, some wear to the metallic finish, spine recently recased, a little dull. A wonderfully designed collection of cocktails evoking the spirit and gaiety of the era.

Harry Craddock is perhaps the most famous English bartender to ever pour drinks. Craddock made his name known during the 1920s and 30s while working in the Savoy Hotel in London. It was there that he published his cocktail recipe book, 'The Savoy Cocktail Book', which was a collection of 750 drink recipes including the famous 'White Lady'. This book revolutionized the modern bar scene. It created such a buzz around bar-goers, that this book remains unsurpassed in its popularity today. Interesting to note, Craddock states in the foreword of this first edition that
"if everyone knew even a little about the absorbing subject of absorbing alcohol there would be even less Prohibition in the United States."

While the contents of this first American edition are particularly desirable, the Art Deco front cover and figures create a masterpiece for collectors.

Constable, London., 1930. First edition, first issue with the half-title and title-page paginated and with the errata slip at page 25. Octavo. 287 pages. Colour illustrations and decorations by Gilbert Rumbold. Art deco cloth-backed boards decorated in green, grey and black, as well as gilt foil. The design of this classic work was intended to complement the art deco of the American Bar at the Savoy. The author, the most famous cocktail barman of the twenties and thirties, was an American who had come to London in 1920 to escape from Prohibition.Spotting to edges and prelims. Much less rubbing to the boards than is usually seen. Very good indeed.
