Heavy brown cloth with leather corners and leather label panels with gilt lettering and volume numbers on spine. 26 volumes bound in 13: Vols. I - XVIII, XXII-XXIX (vols. 19-21 not present) . Vol. I with engraved frontispiece and engraved Title Page with both black and red ink; other volumes with engraved Title Page but in black ink only. Minimal marks, Bangor Theological Seminary Library. Only one volume shows some small tears in the cloth of the cover. Vail [1890-1966] was Librarian of the American Antiquarian Society, Director of the New York Historical Society, renowned bibliographer of Americana, and "the principal modern authority on [Indian captive literature]. ") in a quite elaborate velvet-lined 3 part red Morocco slipcase comissioned by Vail [Bennett, NY], the spine of the outer case with five raised bands, bright gilt title, publication location, and date. Ivory blindstamped cloth with gilt decoration and lettering on covers and spine, gilt foredges. 78 pages, 12 extraordinary color plates including frontispiece; minimal marks, Bangor Theological Seminary; The signature of Roswell D. Hitchcock inside front cover, printed BTS label indicating the book a gift from his library. Hitchcock was a distingished scholar and faculty member at BTS before becoming President of Union Theological Seminary in New York. Gutters professionally reinforced with tape; rubbing, some loss of cloth, at top of spine, spine varnished; some soiling of cover; spine a bit shaky, some edgewear on bottom of boards; art is in excellent, bright, clean condition; pages clean and unmarked; Folio 13" - 23" tall .

Leather, the spines with six pair of gilt rules simulating raised bands, a black leather label panel with gilt lettering and a black leather label panel with volume numers and alphabet range; decorative engraved Title Page preceeding printed Title page; engraved plates. Most of the volumes are in good condition with solid joints and bindings. Vol. I is poor with deterioration of leather of spine and joints and some leather worn off front boards, although the text block is solid and the cords are holding the cover. The front cover of Vol. VI is separated but present, the leather of the rear joint is deteriorating. Some of the decorative engraved Title pages are heavily foxed, as are some of the engraved plates. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
