Contemporary full calf covers, later rebacked to style, endpapers probably replaced, raised bands, spines in six panels, red leather title label to second panel, volume number in gilt to fourth, gilt double line frame to covers, edges lightly sprinkled red. Volume one with some minor marginal staining, small piece missing from fore edge of B7, a small light stain to fore edge margin of signatures E and F, and a light stain to corners of signatures K and L; in volume two the bottom corner of K3 is missing, but generally quite bright and clean. The engraved portrait frontispiece, by Sturt after Sheppard, is the second state (as often), with the vertical chain lines, the lettering around the frame, and the Latin quotation beneath. DJ lightly browned, lower panel very lightly browned, minor chipping to corners, slightly rubbed, especially to joins, and very lightly creased. Spine of book lightly faded, endpapers lightly browned from the glue, small stain to top margin of A6-B4, otherwise internally quite bright and clean. Now housed in a morocco backed drop back box, with raised bands, spine in six panels, title lettered direct to second panel, author to fourth, and date to foot, all panels with double line gilt border, made by Temple Bookbinders. An early Hemingway work, published in the US as 'The Sun Also Rises', in the rare first issue dust jacket. Text leaves lightly browned, occasional marginal soiling and very light spotting, small hole to bottom edge of half title, I1 with a small ink mark catching a letter, but with no loss of sense, small nick to fore edge of Q3 in volume three, but generally fairly clean. Three volumes complete, 1738-1741 - Volume One, [5], ii-viii, [1], ii-xi, [4], 2-678pp (with pages 125-6 and 139-40 omitted); Volume Two, [5], 2-388pp, [8] (with pages 46-49 duplicated and the second page 48 mispaginated as 52, pages 229-236 duplicated and 237-244 omitted) and Volume Three, maps and plans. Uniformly bound in full panelled calf, raised bands, spines in seven panels, title label to second panel, author/volume label to third, remaining panels gilt with central floral spray lozenge and volute corner pieces, covers with rolled panel design and gilt roll to edges. Rebacked and recornered, with a few minor repairs to covers, but quite attractive. Internally several signatures are lightly browned, a few examples of spotting, but generally clean. Original cloth, title, author and publisher in gilt to spine, title and author in gilt to upper cover, black blocked border to covers with fleuron corner pieces. Spine slightly darkened and leaned, small hole repaired at head of spine (near the 'f' of 'of' in the title, minor rubbing to spine ends and extremities, corners lightly bumped. Paper inner joints slightly split, a couple of pages a little carelessly opened, small tear to fore edge margin of pages 199/200, one or two light spots, but generally fairly bright and clean. Frontispiece, by Charles Henry Malcolm Kerr (see Houfe, page 196), lacks the tissue guard, and without publisher's catalogue to rear found in some copies. W.H. Smith and Son blind stamp to ffep, with armorial bookplate of Gloucester to front pastedown. Original blue-green cloth, title, author and publisher in gilt to spine with publisher's circular blind stamp to centre of covers, orange endpapers. Rebacked, with original back strip laid down, gilt to spine has largely been retouched (ie. bands to head, title, and author). Back strip lightly stained. Internally lightly browned and lightly foxed throughout, but nothing too obtrusive. Housed in a very good morocco backed drop back box, made by Asprey & Garrard. Very slightly rubbed to extremities, otherwise externally very good. Internally some light foxing to portraits, endpapers, and occasionally to text, especially to the first volume, but generally fairly clean. With portrait frontispieces to each volume, and another two portraits to third volume, bound without half-titles. Book plate of Horatio Noble Pym to front pastedowns. Now housed in a leather entry slipcase. The first edition of Mackay's extraordinarily popular work on human delusions, which included economic bubbles (South Sea bubble, Mississippi Company bubble, and tulip mania), alchemy, prophecies, thievery, beards, duelling, and price riots. Hint of foxing to edges of text blocks, otherwise externally bright and clean, without any of the usual rubbing to the gilt associated with this book. Internally a hint of foxing, usually to margins, volume one has a small ink mark to the margin of page xxiii and a small mark to the margin of page 69; volume two has a small amount of loss (though still attached to opposite page) to the margin of page 457 where it was opened a little carelessly, and page 475 with a similar problem with small amount of loss to top corner, neither affecting text. With the armorial bookplate of Sir James Reid (personal physician to Queen Victoria, and later monarchs) to the front pastedowns. Contemporary half morocco and cloth, raised bands, spine in six panels, title lettered direct to second panel, t.e.g. Bumped and rubbed to extremities, upper joint is slightly split at head but holding well. Internally some browning, foxing, and off setting to the inscription plates within text, a few plates with foxing, generally to margins, one plate torn along bottom edge of plate mark, one with a closed tear to margin, and one slightly worn to fore edge, one plate bound in upside down, some minor marginal marking and foxing, but generally fairly clean. With six plates of inscriptions to text, sixty plates on sixty-two sheets (Palmyra) and forty-six plates (Balbec), including eleven double page or folding, by Fourdrinier, Muller and Major after drawings by Borra. Original decorative cloth in DJ's, decorative endpapers to volumes two and three. Title, author, volume number, and publisher in gilt to spine, with title, author, and central gilt scarab to upper cover. DJ's slightly worn and very lightly soiled, minor chipping to edges with tiny amounts of loss, a few small tape repairs to reverse, but generally complete. Light stain to upper cover of volume one. Internally a previous owner's name to half-titles, some very minor browning, some light foxing and dust staining to top and fore edges, otherwise quite bright and clean. Laid in loosely are a couple of newspaper cuttings, and some handwritten notes on a lecture given by Carter at University College in 1931. [12], 56pp, [8], original quarter cloth and decorated boards, the upper cover with a pictorial design in colour of Alice asleep and dreaming beneath a tree, signed 'E.G. Thomson', the lower cover with a picture of the March Hare in the centre, and the initials 'E.G.T.'. Cloth to spine repaired, with small splits to head of upper joint, corners bumped with small amounts of loss, slightly rubbed with very light soiling. Internally very lightly browned, lacking tissue guard to frontispiece, but generally clean and fairly bright. Now housed in a black buckram chemise and slipcase, with title and author in gilt to spine. Inscribed by Carroll, in his usual purple ink to half title, being one of one hundred presentation copies (see Williams, Madan, Green and Crutch, page 162), 'For Nina from the author, Mar. 25 1890'.
