London: Cassell and Company, 1923. Three volumes complete, 1923-1933 - Volume One, xxiii, [1], 231pp, [1]; Volume Two - xxxiv, 277pp, [1]; and Volume Three - xvi, 247pp, [1]. Original decorative cloth in DJ's, decorative endpapers to volumes two and three. Title, author, volume number, and publisher in gilt to spine, with title, author, and central gilt scarab to upper cover. DJ's slightly worn and very lightly soiled, minor chipping to edges with tiny amounts of loss, a few small tape repairs to reverse, but generally complete. Light stain to upper cover of volume one. Internally a previous owner's name to half-titles, some very minor browning, some light foxing and dust staining to top and fore edges, otherwise quite bright and clean. Laid in loosely are a couple of newspaper cuttings, and some handwritten notes on a lecture given by Carter at University College in 1931. [12], 56pp, [8], original quarter cloth and decorated boards, the upper cover with a pictorial design in colour of Alice asleep and dreaming beneath a tree, signed 'E.G. Thomson', the lower cover with a picture of the March Hare in the centre, and the initials 'E.G.T.'. Cloth to spine repaired, with small splits to head of upper joint, corners bumped with small amounts of loss, slightly rubbed with very light soiling. Internally very lightly browned, lacking tissue guard to frontispiece, but generally clean and fairly bright. Now housed in a black buckram chemise and slipcase, with title and author in gilt to spine. Inscribed by Carroll, in his usual purple ink to half title, being one of one hundred presentation copies (see Williams, Madan, Green and Crutch, page 162), 'For Nina from the author, Mar. 25 1890'. Handsomely rebound by Temple Bookbinders in full morocco, raised flat bands, spine in six panels, title and author labels to second and fourth panels, remaining panels gilt, covers with double panel design, inner panel with black onlay, elaborate gilt borders, gilt to inner edges with marbled endpapers. Internally some light soiling and offsetting, some plates with faint offsetting from text but generally clean, folding plates a little creased at outer edge, plates with stab-holes to outer margins. Original calf, recently rebacked with original back strip laid on, spine in seven panels, title label to second panel, remaining panels gilt with floral sprays, covers with gilt roll border, floral corner pieces, gilt roll to edges, all edges marbled, shell pattern marbled endpapers with old joins due to sheet size difficulties. Gilt to spine faded, small hole to fourth panel of original back strip, recornered, gilt touched up in a couple of places, small amounts of loss to leather covering fore edges of boards, covers rubbed with a few minor scratches. Internally some light spotting and browning, especially to title, first few plates, and first few pages of text, otherwise fairly bright and clean.
