London: Macmillan & Co, 1902. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/very good. 249p quarto, illustrated. A fine bright copy in a very good dust jacket. The design on the dust jacket differs from the design on the covers of the book. Just So Stories was Kipling's only self illustrated book. A fine bright copy with none of the usual flaking to the white pigment on the binding; armorial bookplate of George Jefferson Mersereau with the bookplate of A. Edward Newton above it on the front paste down. The extremely rare dust jacket is complete with only minor wear and tear and with a few archival tape reinforcements o the inside of the spine. Preserved in a custom cloth chemise and morocco-tipped slipcase

Camden NJ: Whitman, 1876. First Editions. Hardcover. Very good. Signed copies of this "author's editions being the fifth edition, third printing, second issue of Leaves of Grass of which around 800 and 600 copies respectively were printed; the title page signed by Whitman with Two Rivulets first edition, first issue with blank leaf between "As a Strong Bird on Pinions Free and "Memoranda During the War" and ad leaf for Whitman's books between the last two blanks in the book; signed by Whitman on the frontispiece as he did when he sold the books. Both bound in the original marbled boards and half cream calf, spines handsomely rebacked sympathetically. "Leaves" has considerable pencilling (light lines/no words) in the center of the book about 20 pages. Very good set with the original yellow endpapers. Two sets of advertisements, both dated May 1854 and both inserted by the publisher between the paste-downs and the flyleaves (Per BAL there is no priority for the advertisements, as the book was not published until August, and thus books with ads dated from April through August would have been available contemporaneously). A fresh clean copy in the publisher's brown cloth, very near fine indeed. Small expert repair to the crown. Contents clean, crisp and bright, with no foxing. Sharp corners. Attractive early 20th century bookplate of a New England collector on the front paste-down. Small, neat contemporary owner's name on the front free endpaper, else unmarked. Very good. 421p, 549p, 556p illustrated with 87 maps and views 63 of which are in the Atlas volume, all but a couple with tissue guards. 24 in the three quarto volumes. Bound in original leather boards, rebacked in the twentieth century in blonde calf not matching the original leather boards. Atlas volume folio with original marbled boards, and rebacked more recently and wearing along the base of the spine, splitting 6 inches down the front board, corners worn, yet still very attractive. Contents fine and with original tissue guards. Light foxing. Small bookplate in each volume, later personal gift inscription 1945 in each volume. This Atlas volume includes the rare plate "Death of Cook" not issued with the book but occurs in some copies

London, 1924. Very good. Published in "The Letters of Thomas Wolfe. Edited with an illustrated by Elizabeth Nowell (N.Y. Charles Scribner's Sons 1956), pp-71-73 Wolfe's letter primarily concerns an essay which he was drafting entitled "A Passage to England" that he hoped George William McCoy would publish in the Asheville Citizen Times. Wolfe was 24 at the time and he writes with all of the youthful, omnivorous enthusiasm that was so characteristic of him " I arrived in London on Wednesday after an amzaing voyage, and I am now lost in the beauty and mystery and fascination of this ancient and magnificent city..... Purchased by James Joyce in Zurich in the summer of 1939, and subsequently sent by him from Brittany to a friend in Zurich. (The return address label in green ink in Joyce's hand is affixed to the rear pastedown: "Envoi de: J. Joyce/hotel saint cristophe/la baule"). Finnegans Wake was published simultaneously in London and New York on 4 May 1939, entering the stock of the Zurich bookseller Kurt Staheli & Co. on Bahnhofstrasse on June 20(pencil note recording its entry on lower pastedown); acquired by Joyce whilst in Zurich in August 1939. Nicely matted and framed. Einstein writes to Dr. Dagobert D Runes, editor of "Spinoza Dictionary", published by the Philosophical Library in 1951: "Lieber Dr Runes: Ich gebe Ihnen gerne meine Erlaubnis, meine Bemerkungen uber Ihr Spinoza Dictionary in dem von Ihnen gewunschten Sinne zu benutzen. New Orleans, 1873. Manuscript. Hardcover. Very good. 26 pages, lacking the last page. The manuscript is in Cable's neat hand with corrections on every page. Very good in a red cloth slipcase. An exceptional early work of Creole literature. ‘Sieur George’ is Cable's first published short story, appearing in Scribner’s Monthly in 1873, and drawing readers inside the French Quarter’s historic LeMonnier House at 640 Royal Street. The story was deemed a critical and popular success and Scribners went on to publish six more of his stories, which were then collected and printed in Cable’s first book “Old Creole Days”. Cable is considered one of the most important southern writers of the late 19th century, a contemporary and friend of Twain and predecessor to William Faulkner and Robert Penn Warren. Cable was quite progressive for his time, writing in favor of prison reform, and an outspoken advocate against Jim Crow. Slight offsetting on pastedowns from the binder's glue else about fine in lightly rubbed else fine dust jacket. The first book by the Dean of American Cooks, devoted almost entirely to cocktail party finger food. In 1937 Beard moved to New York and started a catering company exclusively devoted to hors d'oeuvres. In 1940 he published this book based upon his experience, which led to further success in the culinary world based on his insistence un using fresh and localingredients. Today, the most prestigious American cooking awards are names the James Beard Awards. This is an exceptional copy and rare thus.

[BRADBURY, RAY] A collection of correspondence between Ray Bradbury and Robert W. Smith, culminating in an interview published by the cult horror & dark fantasy publication Whispers in 1983, titled Ray Bradbury: Literature as Lark. The collection contains 14 letters and 3 postcards from Bradbury (nearly all on his stationary), multiple drafts of Smith’s Q&A style interview (one a 21p draft hand-corrected by Bradbury), research/clippings on Bradbury gathered by Smith, and correspondence between Smith and various publishers regarding the publication of the interview including a handwritten response from Stuart David Schiff, creator and editor of Whispers. Robert Smith was a curious figure in his own right - a CIA intelligence operative, Tai Chi master, and author of over a dozen books on martial arts and hundreds of literary reviews.
