Descripción:
Maisone Blanche, 1943. Only known copy. Brown leatherette binding, with an internal, plastic comb binding. This work appears to be unique, and is in unrecorded in Worldcat. It is a presentation copy for First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, printed by her son Elliott Roosevelt while on active service, with a contribution by FDR. It is accompanied by Elliott Roosevelt's own special diplomatic passport, valid from March 6, 1942 to September 6, 1942, which included most of the period covered by this work as a reconnaissance pilot. This archive of Elliot Rooselvelt's life is a unique documentation of both the service, the privilege, and the talent of President Franklin Roosevelt's son.

Few others would have had the resources and rank to create such a book, apparently in an edition of a single copy, documenting his unit's activity, while on active service in Algiers. The title page reads, top to bottom: "To Mother from Elliott // Third Photographic Group //… Leer más

Descripción:
Washington DC, 1859. Very good. Strong, bold signature nearly 4" long on a note from the President to his Secretary of State, Lewis Cass, in the year leading up to the Civil War. 9.75" x 8", 1 pp. An ink spot touching one word at top third, two small, closed tears at fold and at the bottom of page, reinforce at rear left edge, likely from a stationary booklet.

James Buchanan (1791-1868), was the 15th President of the U.S. from 1857 - 1861, during the build-up leading to the Civil War. Buchanan was the only U.S. president from Pennsylvania, and the only one to remain a lifelong bachelor. His political career ran through the U.S. Senate, Secretary of State, and Ambassador to Britain. Historians rank his presidency low on the scale as he failed to address the growing disparity between slave and non-slave states, leaving the impression that he supported the Southern States to choose their own course. During his tenure the Dred Scott decision gave the impression… Leer más

Descripción:
Washington DC: United States Senate, 1959. Fine. SIGNED in the familiar "Jack Kennedy" one page type written letter to Dr. Alan York dated August 17th, 1959. The letter discusses his impending decision to seek the Democratic presidential nomination. Accompanied by original envelope. The letter is in very good condition with minimal toning at edges. Envelope bears a few small spots and creases. Dimensions: 8" x 10.5" Senator Kennedy discourages the recipient from launching into full support mode for his candidacy prior to his official announcement. JFK held off announcing until January 2, 1960, but this is an indication of the support which was building early on. "Dear Dr. York: I expect to make a decision around the first of the year as to whether or not I will be a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, and should it be in the affirmative, it is my hope tha you will still be of assistance.

Washington DC, 1878. 9.75" x 7.5", 3 pp., on lined stationary, impeccable, crisp, readable penmanship. Very fine letter in which Henry writes to Joseph Patterson to thank him for setting up a Smithsonian Institution testimonial to himself. Henry is effusive in his humility and generous in his gratitude. Better than average content from a prson whos signature is seldom encountered. This may have been one of the last letters he ever signed; he mentions an illness in the firs line and he died a few months later on May 13, 1878.

The first Smithsonian Secretary, Joseph Henry, served from 1846 to 1878. A professor at the College of New Jersey, he was a physicist who conducted pioneering research in electromagnetism and helped set the Smithsonian on its course. Too poor to pay tuition, Henry did not attend the Albany Academy until the late age of 21 despite being admitted to the school earlier. When a position opened up in 1826, Henry accepted a job as the school's… Leer más
