Scarce first edition of Kahlil Gibran's masterpiece of verse - translated into over 60 languages, extensively quoted, and never out of print, THE PROPHET is one of the most popular books ever published. Lithographed portrait frontispiece of Hamilton, two other plates with portraits of Madison and Jay, all portraits have tissue overlays. NOTE: This copy has a 1817 date on the title page, and a total of 477 pages while other books listed are dated 1818 with 504 pages. So this is the first single-volume edition minus the Appendix which was added to the 1818 edition. This is an ex-lib from Columbia University, with several stamps and thie bookplate on inside front cover. The book has been rebound in brown buckram with gilt title on spine and call numbers at bottom. The frontispiece plate has a crease through the center and all 3 plates have light foxing and an embossed stamp. Overall Good Plus with about 12 pages having some light pencil marks in margins. Prose (Blue Angel; The Lives of the Muses) tests assumptions about class, hatred and the possibility of change in this novel, a good-natured satire of liberal pieties, the radical right and the fund-raising world. The "changed man" of the title is Vincent Nolan, a 32-year-old tattooed ex-skinhead who appears one morning in the New York offices of World Brotherhood Watch, a foundation headed by Meyer Maslow, a Holocaust survivor. Vincent declares that he has had a personal conversion (never mind that it was triggered by a heavy dose of Ecstasy) and wants to work with the foundation to "save guys like me from becoming guys like me." The section on Texas and the Santa Fe expedition is attributed to Franklin Coombs, a veteran of the latter ill-fated debacle, and his account of the expedition and his captivity (which first appeared in NILES WEEKLY REGISTER) is reprinted herein, along with another account (Wagner-Camp 86) of a trip to Santa Fe appearing here for the first time in book form. With the six original steel-plate engravings and with title-pages illustrated with large vignettes. First edition with Hobart & Robbins slug on the copyright page. Both volumes state Twenty-Fifth Thousand on the title page indicating a probable fourth printing. The first was five thousand and sold out immediately. Both volumes with chipping and fraying to top and bottom of spines, Vol. 1 with about 1/4" cloth missing at bottom. All corners show wear, spines slightly cocked, but bindings are tight.
