As the Library of Congress listing explains: "John Baily was an Englishman who lived for many years in Central America. He was employed in 1837-38 by the government of Nicaragua to survey a potential canal route from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean. In 1850 Baily published this book and a separate map of Central America that showed four proposed routes for an isthmian canal ... The chapter devoted to Nicaragua is by far the longest and contains a detailed discussion of the proposed route for an inter-oceanic canal through the country." This offering is for the book only. It does NOT include the map, which was published separately. The book does include all three "views" of various places in Central America.

Stated first printing. Signed by author. Facsimile dust jacket of the original cover with $3 price. DJ in protective mylar. This copy is from the library of Oregon writer Sylvia Louise Engdahl, who wrote her name in ink on the first free fly leaf. Engdahl was a runner-up for the 1971 Newberry Medal for her first novel, "Enchantress From the Stars." A longtime friend of the Eugene (Oregon) Public Library, she donated her library to its Friends group. Book, otherwise, has no extraneous writing, marks, or underlining.

NO DUST JACKET. Flat signed by the author on the first free fly leaf. Spine tanned by age and has slight rubbing at bottom and top. Binding tight. Pages clean with no extranious writing, underlining, or marking, Publisher's logo on half title page. This copy was donated to the Friends of the Library in Eugene, Oregon, home to the University of Oregon, where Kesey was graduated, and a neigboring town to Springfield, where Kesey grew up.

"Poems" contains Bryant's best-known work, "Thanatopsis," first published in the North American Review in 1817 and revised in 1821 for this collection. Our copy is in the original brown paper over boards. There is some rubbing to the author's name on the front cover affecting the letters ANT in Bryant. Years ago, the spine was covered wih a strip of white paper (now tanned beige). The lower half of this strip has come unglued, showing the worn brown paper underneath. A conservator could possibly remove the paper strip. Our research indicates few copies remain with the original spine intact. Our copy now rests in a red cloth-covered chemise, which is then enclosed in a similar red cloth slipcase. The slipcase has a leather spine with the title "Poems" and author's last name and publication date in gilt, and five raised bands, also gilded; however, the lower bands have lost or are losing the gilt. This three-volume set is number 1,151 of 2,000 numbered copies in a special edition. Appears unread. 974 plates and text illustrations; some in color. The Wikipedia article on Henri Vever (1854–1942) writes that the French jeweler was a collector of a broad range of fine art, including prints, paintings, and books of both European and Asian origin. By the 1880s, Vever had become one of the first Europeans to formally collect Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints.

This French-language study of the geology of Louisiana was published in 1860 in New Orleans and Paris. Four folding maps and two double-page multi-image plans; and errata. Includes a descriptive bibliography of Louisiana maps, 1685-1858. Three-quarter leather binding; spine missing; wear to cover includes very bad rubbing of corner tips so that the leather has worn through. Text clean and without foxing. As a scientist, Raymonod Thomassy (1810-1863) focused on the geology of Louisiana, but also studied the salinity of the Atlantic Ocean during numerous crossings. An entrepreneur, he created salt works in Louisiana and Georgia.

The cover was re-backed in smooth leather years ago with title and year in gilt. At that time the hinges were reinforced. Corners and edges worn. Large color folding map 15 x 15 inches present and intact. Portraits, illustrations, and all 1,006 pages clean and tight.

=Illustrated thoughout in black-and-white and in color. Bound in cloth with the spines stamped in black and in a gray-green cloth-covered slipcase. Very minor shelfwear to slipcase.

This 712-page history of the American Civil War covers all significant battles, listed alphabetically. There are 12 folding maps; others inset. Many portraits of generals and others. Marbled endpapers. Frontispiece has light water stains on edge. Rest of text clean. Front hinge starting to come apart.

COPY in good condition. Cloth board cover is in good condition except for back map envelope; spine shows signs of wear top and bottom; all pages are intact; pages are in very good condition. All maps intact. The dust jacket is badly tattered.

This book, published in 1939, is a very readable copy of medical help for people with foot problems. Overall, the contents are in good condition. A few pages have been folded in the upper right corner. There are two slips of paper on the back flyleaf, one a sales form for "plunge pails" sold by a research company, the other is something cut from a newspaper or magazine with information on medical conditions. There is a hand written comment on the back flyleaf extolling the measures of foot care. Problems: THERE IS A VERY STRONG MUSTY ODOR. The dust jacket has folds and tears, and also shows foxing on the back cover

Andy Warhal and Gerard Malanga curated this collection, which was published very much on the cheap in 1968 by Toad Press in Eugene, Oregon. There are 114 poems and writings by various contributors. The text is printed throughout in black ink with some pieces accompanied by halftone photographic portraits, printed in either full blue, pink, purple, or black ink. This copy is in fragile condition, but it is complete. The spine's adhesive binding has failed and the paper -- highly acidic newsprint -- has become dark and brittle.

HANDSOME COPY in very good condition. Text in English and Spanish. The book's 287 pages are packed with beautiful color photographs of orchids found on the island of Cuba. Dust jacket is intact with slight shelf wear; spine has no signs of creasing. Book's cover corner tips slightly bumped. Previous owner's name written in ink at top of first free flyleaf; store address sticker on inside back cover. Interior pages otherwise are clean and not marred by notes or folds of any kind.

Second American printing of a classic Bunyan text, which was first published in London in 1688. Size: 5.25 by 4.25 by .75 inches; 176 pages. Heavily worn calf binding, interior heavily foxed throughout but appears to be complete. Possibly contemporary owner's signature inside back cover.

Rev. Henry Clapham Foster was the chaplain to the Second Royal Naval Brigade under Commodore Oliver Backhouse. This is a memoir of his time serving in World War I in Belgium, Turkey, and Gallipoli.
Some pages are unevenly cut, some foxing on pages edges, cover in good condition with slightly bumped corners. Former owner's 1918 signature on front flyleaf.

Binding in full leather with five raised bands on the spine. Cover edges and corners are worn. The hinges are broken but the cords are holding the covers well. Former owner's bookplate on front pastedown: "William Charles De Meudon Earl Fitzwilliam." Also, inked letters at top left of pastedown: B: 5: 51 (marked through) E. VI. 5. No title on spine. Gently effaced library ownershp stamps on bottom title page and first text page. Paper clean and unfoxed. 147 pages followed by a 2-page index, and an appendix of 30 pages plus 12 plates illustrating gold coins of the kings of England.

Homemade label on spine. All of the folding maps are present and clean as are all of the folded engravings (some are colored). Illustrations in the text appear to have never been unfolded. Interior clean, binding tight.
Heavy new white endpapers.

HANDSOME COPY in good condition. Cover and half of pages show a fold in the upper right corner. Otherwise, this book is in excellent condition. There are no marks or notes on the pages. This small volume (8 by 5.5 by .75 inch) tells in 199 pages the story of Arizona "from the earliest times known to the people of Europe to 1903. Blue cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering on spine, black lettering on front cover. Shelf wear to top and bottom of cover, corners slightly bumped, color bleached on bottom right corner. Notes in ink and pencil on free front endpage, no other markings in text.
