Descripción:
"New World Saints" - A collection of 25 hand-colored prints in triptychs by the artist Catherine Ferguson, with text by Spanish Colonial scholar Donna Pierce and pochoir by Palace Press staff was published by the Press of the Palace of Governors, Museum of New Mexico, in Santa Fe in 1995. Quoting from the description in The Palace Print Shop & Bindery,
"...The portfolio includes paper triptychs that serve as shrines for the prints of saints whose popularity either traveled from the Old World to the New or originated in the Americas. Arched tops of the triptychs are handsomely embossed with a traditional scallop design and the double doors carry a biographical sketch or mythology of each of the saints found inside. This richly colorful iconographic celebration, five years in the making, is housed in a hand-bound, arched-top box lined with Italian printed papers and gold foil."
"New World Saints" was designed and printed letterpress by Pamela Smith. The Portfolio text is set in Dante Monotype.… Leer más

Descripción:
The World is currently recovering from an active pandemic that had the world's political and medical leaders searching for solutions. The concerns of detecting, treating and curing the victims of this pandemic bring to mind the similar concerns that faced populations in earlier times when unexpected plagues, or pestilences, that decimated the population fell upon them. In 1665-1666, for example, the Great Plague of London (which killed an estimated 100,000 people – almost a quarter of London's population – in 18 months) attacked England. W. Kemp, a medical practitioner at the time, decided he could best help the City of London fight this plague by publishing his recommendations inA Brief Treatise of the Nature, Causes, Signes, Preservation From, and Cure of The Pestilence.

The Gift: A Christmas and New Year's Present for 1843- (Includes the first appearance of Edgar A Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum") was copywritten in 1842 and published in 1843 by Carey and Hart in Philadelphia. The 328 gilt-edged page book is bound in a medium tan, age toned leather binding with beautiful ornate floral gilt tooling on both front and back pages. The book measures approximately 4 ¾ inches wide by 7 ½ inches tall by 1 inch thick.
The book, which was intended to be presented as a gift during the year end holidays, has an inscription on the front end paper that reads "Walter Port?? Manton From his Grandfather Joseph Manton, 25 december 1870". On the following page is written "Joseph B. Manton, Oct 10, 184?". On the rear end paper is written "Jan 5, 1843 – E. J. M., Providence". It appears that this copy of the book may have been passed between generations.
The contents of the book consists of 23 literary pieces by many authors, with the highlight, from today's perspective, being the… Leer más

The Genealogischer Calender auf das Yahr 1787 mit Kupferningezierets und mit Genehmigung der Königlichen Academie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin herausgegeben (Genealogical Calendar On the year 1787 with copper engravings and with the approval of the Royal Academy of Sciences at Berlin) was published in Berlin for the year 1787. The book, which measures approximately 2 ½ x 4 inches, contains over 200 string-bound pages and is bound in a stamped vellum cover that wraps around the whole book, with a "flap/slot" seal in the front. The book is written in German. Some of the features of this Genealogical Calendar are:
• The initial pages contain the typical data for the months of the year usually found in almanacs. The section is enhanced, however, by 12 engraved plates by Daniel Chadowieki, that appear – one for each month. The plates bear no relationship to the data shown for the month, but instead represents scenes from the play Die Jäger by the German actor and playwright August Iffland. An eight… Leer más

Descripción:
This First Edition copy of The Adventures of Doctor Comicus, or The Frolicks of Fortune - A Comic Satirical Poem for the Squeamish & The Queen, in Twelve Cantos, by a Modern Syntax was published in London by Jaques & Wright of Paternaster Row and printed by J. McGowan and Son for B. Blake of No. 15, Bell Yard, Temple Bar. The date of publication is uncertain, but believed to be between 1815 and 1828. The word Frolicks in the title page is often spelled Frolics elsewhere. The author and illustrator are both unknown. Since this book is accepted as the first of many imitations of the William Combe and Thomas Rowlandson's Dr. Syntax trilogy, these gentlemen are often identified as this book's author and illustrator. That supposition is unproven, but it is clear that the book's declaration of A Modern Syntax as the author is a play on words on the Dr. Syntax of the earlier published William Combe's works.

This First Edition copy of A Practice of Modern Physic, Reduced To The Most Simple Form, Consistent With Efficacy, by Henry Wilkins (Student of Medicine, 1791 and 1792) was published and printed by Parry Hall of Philadelphia in 1793. The book, which measures approximately 4 inches wide by 6 ½ inches tall by ½ inch thick, contains 94 pages of text devoted to descriptions of the causes, symptoms, management and cures for all sorts of diseases and health problems. (It is probable that several pages of the book may be missing, such as pages 4-5 which appears to have been cut out, and 2 or more pages at the end of the book that would have better completed the book's text.)
The book is hard bound in brown cloth covered boards, which are in poor condition with wear on all surfaces, a semi-detached front cover, and a break in the spine cover. The pages of the book show the signs of aging, with tanning, brittleness along the edges, and instances of detached or semi-detached pages or page groups. The text,… Leer más

"The Conjure Woman" by Charles W. Chesnutt was published in 1899 by Houghton, Mifflin and Company of Boston and New York and printed by The Riverside Press of Cambridge. This First Edition copy of the book, which measures approximately 4 ¾ x 7 inches, contains 229 pages and is hard bound in brown cloth covered boards with gilt printing on the front and spine, plus colored illustrations on the front cover. A bookplate of a previous owner is attached to the inner front cover, and a handwritten note on the title page reads "Cleveland's first Negro author of distinction". The front free end paper is detached, the book's pages are lightly tanned, and there is slight fraying at the top and bottom of the spine. This letter, handwritten by Sinclair Lewis on 7 x 10 inch letterhead stationery of the Elton Hotel in Waterbury, Connecticut (which name Sinclair crossed out and replaced with So. Pomfret, Vt.), addressed to Mr. Milton E. Cornman of Cleveland, was written on June 20, 1936. The text of the letter is short, but characteristic of Lewis' approach to life. The text reads:
Dear Mr. Cornman: No, you guessed right. I wouldn't have liked any helpful criticism. By my age, one is irrevocably sunk in sin. Sincerely yours, /s/ Sinclair Lewis.
Accompanying the letter is the 7.5 x 3 ¾ inch hand addressed envelope in which the letter was mailed, postmarked on June 20, 1936 in Waterbury, Connecticut.
The letter is in fine condition; the envelope in very good condition.
