Some faint spotting on top and bottom of boards, previous owner book plate pasted to front paste down and gift inscription on half title page dated December 1942; otherwise book is clean, unmarked and nicely bound without any cracking at the hinges. Dust jacket is bright, has wear to tips and edges of spine panel, and a 3/4" tear top of rear flap fold. Not only did this novel win Ryerson's "All-Canada Fiction Award" (as stated on the dust jacket), this novel went on to win the Governor Gerneral's Award for Fiction. 420 pages. Ends of spine pushed in, and trace wear to tips and bottom of spine, otherwise a fine book without any foxing. First state dust jacket is not price-clipped, retaining original publisher's printed price of 15/-net. The ends of spine panel and flap folds are chipped and browned around the chips. These defects have been professionally repaired with white tissue which blends in exceptionally well with the white of the dust jacket, and is hardly noticeable except for lack of gloss. Jacket design by Raymond Hawkey. Author's first book (issued as Secret File No 1), a spy novel featuring Harry Palmer (un-named in the book) and basis of the 1965 movie starring Michael Caine. 224 pages.. New York: Thomas Y. Crowell Co., 1967. Bound in yellow cloth with blue illustration on upper board and blue lettering on spine. Spots of foxing along bottom and top edges of cloth and a couple of small spots on rear board; internally all pages are clean, unmarked and without foxing. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has a few tiny spots of foxing mainly on the front panel, rubbing along flap folds, and a small split top of rear flap fold, but the yellow and blue colours are bright. Like most copies, this one has the "Crowell Library Binding" sticker affixed on the spine panel and front panel of the dust jacket. A children's book and an early one of Westlake's; hard to find.. Vancouver: Phoenix, 1992. Quarter bound in dark brown leather and light brown cloth, with gilt lettering stamped on the upper board and on spine. Printed in a limited edition of 215 copies, this is one of 15 copies (no. 11) quarter-bound in leather; signed by both Al Purdy and Alex Widen, co-founders of Phoenix Press. An eight-colour linocut illustration by Jim Rimmer, who also designed the typeface (Albertan), is tipped to the title page. Due to a dispute between Purdy and Widen fewer than 100 copies were ever bound up, with many of the remaining sheets destroyed (see E6 of Bruce Cave's excellent bibliography of Roderick Haig-Brown for further interesting details). Contains an introduction by Purdy, correspondance between Purdy and Roderick Haig-Brown between 1974 and 1976 (the year of Haig-Brown's death), and "Cougar Hunter" which tells, in part, about Haig-Brown's experience as a professional bounty hunter for cougars on northern Vancouver Island in the early 30s. Boston: Cummings and Hilliard Booklet has stiff grey paper covers, 6 1/8" x 9 1/4". There are a few faint stains on both the front and rear covers, minor paper loss at spine ends, a short tear top of front cover, and owners name inside front cover. This Sixth Edition, is undated but likely 1810s, has 8 maps bound in such a way as to lay flat when opened. The maps, in order, are "The World", "North America", "The United States" (with the most western states being Missisippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois and Michigan), "South America", "Europe", "Britain or the United Kingdom of England Scotland and Ireland", "Asia", and "Africa". Five of the maps have hand coloured borders. There is faint offsetting of one side of each map on to the other side.. Booklet. Very Good..

Printed by the Morriss Printing Company on L. Amatruda 100% cotton moldmade paper from Amalfi, Italy; text hand set; endpapers are of Krypton Parchment 100% cotton and flax paper marbled by Joan Ryan. Frontispiece illustration is an original etching by Irmgard Benedict. 31 pages plus colophon. This copy signed on the Preface page by the person who wrote it, Howard Gerwing. London: W. Robinson, 1903. Three large (9 3/4" x 12 3/4") uniform volumes bound in maroon cloth with horizontal gilt rules and gilt lettering on spine. Spines slightly faded, light spotting of the top edge of pages, board edges lightly rubbed, spine ends pushed in, but not frayed, and tips of boards slightly pushed in as well. A monthly review bound up for each of years 1903, 1904, and 1905. Each volume has its own title page and preface that were not part of the monthly magazines; the original covers of the monthly magazine are not bound in. Articles by various writers on different species of plants and trees. The magazine started in April 1903 and ran through December 1905, thus Volume 1 includes nine months, the other two volumes twelve months each. Each month has two colour plates (thus 66 in total, all present) with tissue guards. These are fine colour lithographs (not chromolithographs) which the editor refers to as "smudge lithographs". Qay'llnagaay (Skidegate): Theytus & Haida Gwaii Musesum, 2001. 8" x 10". B&W reproduction of illustrations throughout of an old Haida tale. 85 pages. Similar in style to what now is termed Haida Manga originated by Yahgulanaas. In this copy there are three full page original drawings (Shamanic Doodles) done by Yahgulanaas, all in colour, on the glossy pages of the book. These drawings could be removed and framed. Perrier Very attractive motor map of Scotland, overall size 38" x 49", folded 4 times horizontally and 4 times vertically to make 25 sections (each 7 5/8" x 9 7/8"), mounted on one piece of dark grey cloth (linen?). Lithographic print in eight colours. The condition of the map is excellent save for a few light stains. Not dated but Perrier is advertised as "by special appointment to H.M. King Edward VII", so 1901-1910. The map goes from latitude 54 degrees 40' in the south to 58 degrees 40' in the north, and includes the islands of Scotland and part of Northern Ireland in the western part of the map and part of northern England in the south east corner. There is a nice ad for Perrier "The Champagne of Table Waters", 7" x 7 1/2" pasted to the top left corner of the map and "Perrier Motor Map" in large bold letters printed directly on the map at the top right corner. Two volumes uniformly bound in green cloth with brown calf backstrip, coat of arms on upper boards and gilt lettering on spine, top edges gilt, dark green endpapers with gilt floral design; crown quarto. Leather has minor rubbing at ends of spines, there is a short (1/4") tear top of spine of volume 1, a nicely engraved bookplate of the singer and biographer Dorothy Moulton Mayer on verso of front free endpaper. Some pages are unopened in volume 2 along the fore edge. 520 copies printed for England, and 260 for America; this is copy no. 158. Pages: 371 and 379 (with index); with portrait and six original etchings by Adolphe Lalauze, and eleven subjects illustrating Italian comedy by Maurice Sand, engraved on copper by A.
