New York: Jack Green, 1964. New York: Jack Green, c. 1964. Foolscap, each issue mimeographed from typescript on cheap paper and stapled once at the upper left hand corner. With 2 unnumbered supplements on Wilhelm Reich. Nos. 1-5 with smaller contents sheet at upper staple. Unpaginated with the exception of nos. 6 and 12-14, the latter consecutively numbered through the 3 issues. [14], [14], [16], [14], [12], 35, [16], [12], [24], [32], [6], 1-22, 23-46, 47-76, [16], [18], [16] pp. Collated against other examples of each issue we've handled over the years, and to the best of our knowledge complete. The first 17 issues of the eccentric zine and abiding literary enigma, comprising all issues that were published in the 1960's. An 18th issue followed in 1979 (fact). Jack Green is best remembered now for being the world's foremost, and hardest working fan of William Gaddis and The Recognitions, who devoted several other issues of Newspaper to defending the work against critics, as well as a full page… Leer más

Descripción:
np, 1957. Provenance: acquired by Peter Howard of Serendipity Books from Robert Creeley. The immensely talented Laubies was a visual artist associated at different times with the Tachisme, Art Informel, and Nuagisme movements. He was also the first translator of Ezra Pound into French, and it was Ezra Pound who introduced Creeley to Laubies in Paris in 1951. They would become close friends and collaborators, and it was via Laubie and the Galerie Fachetti that Creeley was first exposed to Abstraction Expressionism (for a discussion of this period, see the interview with Creeley in John Wilson's A Sense of Increment). Laubies contributed the iconic cover to the first edition of his The Gold Diggers, published under Creeley's own Divers Press imprint in 1954, and also on The Immoral Proposition for Jargon Press the year prior. The second drawing here, "The Party", was published in the [ ] issue of the Black Mountain Review, making this a very rare chance to acquire original artwork published in the… Leer más

Descripción:
Paris: Bernard Grasset, 1954. First edition. 8vo, 205 pp, printed wraps. In the photographically illustrated dust jacket. Association copy, generously inscribed in the year following publication to the occultist and fellow Rosicrucian Jean Haab: "A jean Haab / Qui avant mème d'être ceinture noire avait dejá se bien servi le judo. En toute amitié, Paris,, 20 Septembre 55." A striking association linking Klein's work with the occult. At the age of 24, Klein left France and studied Judo in Japan, achieving a 4th dan blackbelt - an unusual accomplishment for a European of that era. Upon his return to France Klein opened the Judo Académie in Paris, and then published this extensive survey of Judo, illustrated with hundreds of black and white photographs, many of them featuring Klein himself. While the influence of Judo on Klein's work has received increasing attention in recent years, the influence of the occult on Klein is still largely unexplored. Along with his friend Claude Pascal, whom he met… Leer más

London: Macmillan, 1894. 8vo, 321, [2] + 5 pp, bound in green cloth titled in gilt. No dust jacket. A reprint, in Macmillan's Colonial Library Series. Ex Libris Roger Casement, with his signature to fep: 'Roger Casement Cape Town June 30 1900'. Beneath this, the book is inscribed by Casement to his close friend Herbert Ward: 'To Herbert from Roddie at (indecipherable) 12 Aubrey Walk Campden Hill Rd Sept 12th 1900.' Written in Roger Casement's hand on the rep in pencil is the following text: "Those who only half live, remember can only half die. The rending of life from the has already been half accomplished."  A remarkable association copy with a brief, but unrecorded and poignant text by Casement. The two men had first met each other in the Congo, and became best friends, united by their concern for the abuses of colonialism in the Congo and other matters. Casement became Godfather and namesake to Ward's youngest son.  The second inscription to Ward, on September 12, came just after a time… Leer más

New York: James A. Carr & Robert A. Wilson, 1964. First edition. 8vo, 72pp, printed on watermarked paper and bound in leatherette stamped in gilt at the spine; yellow silk bookmark sewn in. In the original unprinted glassine wrapper. One of 12 presentation copies, with a holograph poem bound in, signed by Wieners and both publishers. With a tls from Robert Wilson also laid in. The manuscript page has the poem "Two Years Later" written out in Wiener's hand and bound in. This poem is the concluding poem of the book on page 71 of the printed text, and in this copy the lower right hand corner of the page is burnt away. The letter from Wilson is written "to certify that the small cigarette burn in the lower right corner of page 71 of Ace of Pentacles is ‘Auhtorial' i.e. caused by John Wieners when signing the twelve presentation copies." (The spelling of Auhtorial is likely not a misspelling, but is probably Bob quoting Wiener's fabulous accent - perhaps as he rational- ized the burn). The only other… Leer más

London: O.T.O., 1937. 4to, v, 137 + [1] pp, + [65] facsimile manuscript sheets laid in at rear, with errata slip tipped in facing p. [138] listing 17 items. With cancel slip to title page changing the date to 1937, with the High Holborn address. Fore edges of text untrimmed. All sheets laid into the card folder which was printed to hold the facsimile sheets. Though not marked as such, from the library of Gerrit Lansing. An unusual state, which matches most points of the Subscriber's edition, which had been limited to 250 copies. However, this copy is not bound in orange paper boards, as usually found, but instead consists of loose sheets laid into a folder which bears the same printed cover as that used to hold the smaller facsimile sheets. The Comment is printed inside the back of the folder. The folder is darkened and chipped at extremities, and cracked and nearly separated at the spine for about half of its height, with a large chip missing from the upper margin of back panel, and with… Leer más

Amsterdam: Hack-Tic, 1989. 8vo, each issue saddle-stapled in wraps. With 2 posters. 23 issues in 15 fascicules [of 16 published]. A nearly complete run, lacking only the last double number, of the first hacker zine published in Amsterdam. It includes the very rare first number, distributed in an edition of about 50 copies. The zine was inspired by the 1988 visit of several members of Hamburg's Chaos Computer Club to the Paradiso in Amsterdam. The first issue was published early in 1989, and that year Gonggrijp, Caroline Nevejan and Patrice Riemans hosted the Galactic Hacker Party at the Paradiso. Hack-tic continued until 1993, when it hosted the Hacking at the End of the Universe happening. For four years and 25 numbers, the zine became one of the most influential hacking zines in Europe. The zine would eventually lead to the formation of the Hacktic Network, which became the ISP XSFALL. Though the zine ceased in 1993, the Hack-Tic group still organizes prominent hacker conventions. [Prague]: Druk H. Mercy, 1910. 8vo,107 pp, stab-stapled and glue bound into violet printed wraps. Front and back panels of wraps detached but present, with the paper covering the spine mostly perished. Marginal annotations in pencil throughout. The second edition of this privately published and circulated utopian proposal to create an organized intelligentsia and foster human creativity against capitalism. Published around Whitsun in Prague, it includes reactions from readers who had received the first version of the text. A third, publicly published edition would follow later this same year. The work was written by Viktor Hueber, a former Austrian captain who became a member of the circle which published the short-lived magazine Der Anfang, in which Benjamin published his first poems and essays. Hueber was later associated with Franz Pfemfert's better known periodical Die Aktion, and early issues of the magazine bore the subtitle "Publikationsorgan der Organization der Intelligenz", a reference to… Leer más

Amsterdam: Aktiegroep Nieuwmarkt, 1975. Nos. 1-4, 6-21. Foolscap format, nos. 1-3 crimp-bound at left margin, later issues either stapled once at upper left hand corner, or folded, unbound sheets. Text in Dutch. A nearly complete run, lacking only the 5th number, of this impassioned underground periodical which bracketed the Nieuwmarkt Riots [Nieuwmarktrellen]. The riots protested the forced condemnation and eviction of buildings to construct the Eastern Metro, hence the striking drawing of a death's head train driving out of the cover of the first issue. On 24 March 1975, later known as Blue Monday, extensive riots broke out with police to protest the demolitions. While the demolitions continued, future plans for other metro lines were abandoned. The pages of Nieuwmarkt Dagblad capture the blow by blow intensity of those days, with striking artwork, cartoons, and photographs of the riots. Very good with scattered creasing and toning.

Descripción:
Frankfurt am Main: S. Fischer, 1978. First edition. 12mo, 109 [3] pp, wraps. Without printed band announcing the Robert Walser prize, as usually found. Association copy, inscribed by Fritz in the year of publication to Dr. Hermann Mayer. "dern lieben, hochgeschalsler Herr Ministerialral Dr. Hermann Mayer, ohne desser Kulturpolitik in Aktion (okonom + psychologie) ich vielleichl zum "armen Spielman" der literatur genorder ware. in Dankbarheil Ihre Marianne Fritz. Milbrook, der 30 (indecipherable) 1978. The Austrian writer's first book, the size of which does little to foreshadow the length and textual intricacies of her latter, mammoth works, though the irony and horror of the effects of war are all clearly laid out. Perhaps because of her increasing reticence in later years, signed or inscribed trade works by Fritz, such as this one, are rare.

New York: James A. Carr & Robert A. Wilson, 1964. First trade edition. 8vo, 72 pp, bound in gilt-stamped blue cloth. Lacking the unprinted glassine jacket. With a wine label laid in. This copy is inscribed by Wieners to Dave Haselwood on page 23, with the printed label from a bottle of Paul MAsson Rhine Castle wine carefully removed and laid in. The inscription occurs directly below the brief and enigmatic poem "The Pool of Light" - "A shimmering fern leaf, 2 upraised em-/ blems of gold / lift an instant, trem-/ blings revolved. / O Switzerland, O Schon castle, o land across / the Rhine." The label is bracked by embossed gold emblems above a pastoral view of the castle. We'd always been puzzled by this wistful but beautiful poem, but the presence of the label makes us think that the poem is a meditation on this label or one like it. Wieners wasn't a stranger to Rhine castle wine. In "Poet Be Like God," by Kevin Killian and Lewis Ellingham, there is an account of "A Famous Evening", as Kyger… Leer más

Fidel Castro wrote the following elegy for him in an open letter to his friends: "He conocido con profundo pesar la noticia del fallecimiento de Arsacio Vanegas, y deseo hacerles llegar mi más sincero sentimiento de condolencia. [Buffalo]: [Gallery Upstairs Press], 1968. First edition. 21 1/4 x 28 1/2", offset lithograph on thick cardboard stock. With rubberstamped facsimile of McClure's signature at verso. Visual reproduced from McClure's distinctive holograph in red, overlayed onto a found image of two lions roaring at the sea - a legend readng "Security and Trust" can be read at the foot of the image, perhaps indicating that this was appropriated from an old advertisement or bond. We wish we knew more about this gallery, located at 3400 Main St. in Buffalo, which also published John Wieners' Pressed Wafers, as well as a work by Cornelius Cardew. One of the most beautiful broadsides of the era. Several strong creases, with some minor soiling, with a couple small chips to margins slightly affecting image, but the recto presents well. Toning and several tears to verso. Very good.

np, nd [c. late 19th century]. 6 x 9" broadside, printed in English with Chinese letters at left margin. Complete with both original sensitive leaves, each printed on thin glassine paper hand-painted with red pigment. Lacking the original envelope. Sensitive leaves were a fortune-telling device by which the temperament of a subject could be ascertained when the glassine leaf was placed into the palm of a hand, and the degree and manner in which it curled or was otherwise animated. The division of personality was based upon the humors, revealing a sanguine, choleric, phlegmatic, or melancholy disposition. This particular version is attributed to one Yang-Hou, of Kiagnen, China, and is one of several which were attributed to a Chinese source, sometimes with racist caricatures such as the second of the two leaves. Both leaves fine. The broadside has several old fold lines, with a couple small holes at folds and a small bit missing at one tip, else very good.

Paris: Chamuel, 1897. First edition. 8vo, xxiii, 417 pp, wrappers typographically printed in black and red. Illustrated with a frontispiece photograph of Albert Poisson, and photographs of Papus and August Strindberg. With a preface by Papus. Text in French. First edition of this work on tarot and alchemy by the French occultist and editor of L'Hyperchimie. Castellot was heavily influenced by Charles Fourier, and was for a time a member of the SFIC (French Section of the Communist International) until he was excluded in 1922. Castellot was a devotee of the monadist philosophy Hylozoism, the belief that all matter is in some way alive, and this perspective underlies his work on alchemy, hermeticism, and spiritual communism. Today he is best remembered for being a mentor to August Strindberg, but his unique body of work is long overdue for a rediscovery and translation, in particular this unusual work, which attempts to outline the alchemical correspondences of both the major arcana and the suits.… Leer más
