INSCRIBED in black ink on front free endpaper by Frank ("To Ray of New Haven 1997 Nov 18. This is the PRESENT .. gone Robert Frank"). Classic photographic work. Six page Introduction by Jack Kerouac.

Hardcover in original chocolate brown cloth with gilt stamped design of an Indian on front covers. 23cm. Corners frayed. Recased with new inner hinges. Original endpapers preserved. Other restoration includes releasing the free front endpapers from the pastedowns along the gutter areas. Minor chipping and tears at ends of backstrip have been repaired. Binder's conservation report laid in. INSCRIBED in Lady Burton's hand ("To Dear Uncle Robert with the best love of Richard and Puss Burton, January 22, 1872. Garswood") on the free front endpaper in Volume I. From the John Ralph Willis Collection of Africana with his bookplate on the front pastedowns. Richard and Isabel Burton were married at Garwood, her Uncle Robert's home, in 1861. They stayed with or relied upon financial help from Isabel's Uncle Robert from time to time over the years.

London: Day & Son, 1856. 1st quarto edition. 6 vols. in 3. Complete with 2 maps, 242 tinted litho plates (including a portrait of Roberts) and 6 tinted litho title-pages. Original gilt armorial blue cloth binding. 29 cm. This set was recently resewn and recased with hinges reinforced with modern dark binder's tape. All edges gilt. Joints rubbed with some loss of color. The resewing has tightened the volumes so they do not lay flat when opened. All tissue guards present, except between the Roberts portrait and the first tinted litho title-page and preceding the vignette title-page in Vol. 3. Foxing, present on only a minority of leaves, is mostly modest and mostly confined to the margins. Heaviest foxing is on the Roberts portrait frontis -- foxing mostly confined to the margins on the portrait of Roberts but substantial and uniform on the blank side) and on the unprotected vignette title-page in Vol. 3. Francofurti ad Moenum [Pars VI]: Apud Matthaeum Becker [Pars Quarta et Quinta], Ex officina Wolfgang Richteri [Pars VI], Typis Wolffgangi Richteri [Pars Septima], 1606. 1st eds. Hardcover. Fair (because of all the repairs, trimming and reconstruction.). 4 parts [or volumes] now bound in 2 volumes, [of the 12 parts or volumes which constitute de Bry's "Petits Voyages" on travels, mostly to the East Indies and elsewhere in Asia, Africa and the Middle East, all of which were published between 1598 and 1628]. Later leather, probably 19th or early 20th century, with joints tender and the appearance of modest loss of leather. Armorial bookplate (Henry Howard of Graystoke) in both volumes as well as a later small nameplate ("EHH") mounted on both bookplates. At some point the text and plates in these volumes were carefully and painstakingly repaired and reconstructed leaf by leaf from a damaged copy. Original fawn-colored cloth, rebacked with most of original backstrip mounted. Endpapers preserved with hinges professionally repaired with archival paper tape. Backstrip slightly darkened. Light cover soiling, scattered foxing. Bookplate (Burke Casari). First issue of Burton's first book. Penzer calls this first issue in fawn cloth "rare."

Paris: Michel Levy, 1874. 1st ed. Softcover rebound in later leather. Near Fine. [4], [1], 5-48p. Later dark blue leather wih original wrapper bound in. 24 cm. INSCRIBED by Hugo on half-title ("A Auguste Vacquerie Victor Hugo"). French text. Three brown-toned reproductions of photos mounted on preliminary leaves added prior to the front cover of the preserved original wrapper, presumably when this was rebound. Binder's name ("Creuzevault") in small gilt letters inside front cover (at bottom). Vacquerie, 1819-1895, was an admirer of Victor Hugo and connected to him through the marriage of his brother Charles to Hugo's daughter Leopoldine in February, 1843 -- Charles and his pregnant wife Leopoldine drowned in the Seine only seven months after they were married. Vacquerie joined Victor Hugo when he went into exile in 1851 and followed him from Brussels to Jersey in 1852 and to Guernsey in 1855 where Hugo remained in exile until 1870. Jacket flaps tightly glued to inside of covers. Jacket complete but soiled and edge-worn with old creases and some tears. The jacket appears to have been completely reinforced with strips of brown paper glued to back of jacket. "Publication date Jul 22 1932" stamped in red near top edge of rear panel near backstrip. Fisher, an African American, was a commencement orator for Brown University's Class of 1919 and went on to graduate Howard University Medical School in 1924, become a practicing physician and a roentgenologist, write two novels and several short stories and die at the age of 37. A collection of his short stories was published in 1991 ("City of Refuge"). The Conjure-Man Dies" is generally considered to be the first mystery to feature African American detectives. New York: Currier & Ives, 125 Nassau Street, 1872. Very Good. [Print] Currier & Ives. The First Colored Senator and Representatives in the 41st and 42nd Congress of the United States. Currier & Ives print copyrighted 1872. 34cm. x 27cm. Black and white. Modest soiling, wrinkling, light waterstains and other wear around edges. Small closed tear about 1.5 centimeters above and a bit to the left of Jefferson Long's head. Image area has a few, mostly tiny, brown spots but is otherwise clean. Overall, this is an appealing copy. An iconic print picturing the first African Americans to serve in the U.S. Congress. Pictured are Senator Hiram Revels (Mississippi) and Representatives Benjamin Turner (Alabama), Josiah Walls (Florida), Robert De Large (South Carolina), Jefferson Long (Georgia), Joseph Rainy (South Carolina) and R. Brown Elliot (South Carolina). All were elected from the South during Reconstruction.

Quite a few blank pages were inserted at end, probably when this was rebound. 18cm. Bookplate (Burke Casari's, on which he has written "Purchased from Quentin Keynes"). One of the scarcest Burton titles.

Contemporary black leather which has been rebacked in later black leather. 27cm. Cover scuffed. Corner heavily rubbed with loss of leather. Half-title and tissue guards present. Moderate foxing on tissue guards and some scattered elsewhere. Minor offsetting and age-toning. Color plates clean and attractive as are the maps and charts. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. INSCRIBED (as "the "Author") on half-title to the author's mother ("Lady Helen Hall from her affectionate Son, The Author").

Montgomery, Alabama: National Publishing Company, 1919. 1st and only edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Full page frontis portrait of Booker T. Washington, photos, index, 617, (3)p. Original black cloth. 31 cm. Minor spotting on back cover. One text leaf has a chip in right margin. No jacket (did it have one?). An appealing copy of this scarce and rather lavish production -- probably the fanciest of the African American Who's Who volumes.

1975. Very Good. A five inch stack of files containing about 110 letters from Guy to Jeffrey dated between 1965 and 1989 as well as photocopies of many of Jeffrey's letters to Guy over the same period. Also in the files are a few drafts of articles and other items. Condition of the letters and other material varies - some have a bit of staining or other wear. Some run on to several pages; a few are brief; several are cramped onto the space provided by the old single sheet folded aerogrammes. The archive also includes a file containing 55 WWII letters from Jeffrey Butler to his family back in South Africa. Almost all of the WWII letters are on aerogrammes, stamped "Passed by Censor." The file also includes a typed transcription of Jeffrey's WWII letters. Guy Butler was an important English-speaking South African poet and writer as well as a professor at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa. [1], [8], 455, [1], xxvii, [1], [8], 436, vii, [41]p, Modern quarterbinding (marbled boards backed in leather). 28cm. Internally sound and crisp with only scattered foxing or browning. Triangular piece replaced at bottom of title-leaf in Vol. IV. Lacks first text leaf in Vol. I (a blank?) which is why text and text pagination begins with page 3. A cornerstone work in the development and codification of English law.

Foxing on illustrations. Bookplate of famed actor John Barrymore (along with a recent penciled note stating that this book was sold for $24.80 as lot B-73 at an auction in 1941 (after the actor's death). Letter (tipped in) and inscription by the author's sister Magdalene (who died in childbirth in 1823 while married to Henry Harvey). The letter and inscription appear to be to the same person, addressed in the inscription as M. Le Chevalier. We believe that the recipient was Jean Baptiste Joseph, chevalier Delambre.

n.p. (Ottawa?): Canadian Department of the Interior. Topographical Survey, 1930. Hardcover. Very Good. (1), 4, (1)p. followed by 131 mounted and captioned aerial photographs. The title-page, Contents leaves and Foreword are printed on one side of the first six grayalbum leaves followed by the mounted and captioned photos on one side of the remaining 131 (all so numbered) gray leaves. Oblong black cloth album (approximately 33 x 24 cm.). Front cover lettered in gilt. Some splitting on outer layer of cloth at bottom and top ends of the sides of the backstrip. Quality and detail of the photographs vary, at least partly because the photos were taken at altitudes as low as 200 feet and as high as 12,000 feet but also because some photos appear to have faded or lightened. The album is described in the Foreword as "... a selection of representative views of Canada. The album starts in the Maritime provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick (plus one photo of PEI's Charlottetown) and works its way west… Leer más

Modern (20th century), inexpensive quarterbinding (oddly patterned paper-covered boards backed in black leather). Folio (42cm.) Poorly-printed red title labels on backstrips. Lacks 2 plates (numbers 52 and 53) in Vol. I. Outer leaves browned and stiffly bound. Extensive visible but mostly light staining causing pages to be somewhat rippled. Pococke, a Christian cleric (Church of Ireland), traveled to Egypt, the Holy Land and various others parts of the Middle East as well as Greece from 1737-1740. He also traveled extensively in Europe on his way home over the next two years; those travels are described in lesser detail (pages 197-276 of Vol. II, Part II. Chicago: Charles Leib, 1860. Very Good. Four-page newspaper. A couple of small holes, various brown spots and other bits of minor wear A campaign newspaper for Abraham Lincoln in the Presidential Campaign of 1860. We note a half-column story on the front page of this issue that accuses Senator Douglas of being a Roman Catholic -- a charge based partly on the fact that Mrs. Douglas was a Catholic as were their children -- probably an effective charge in largely Protestant mid-19th century America. Our brief research suggests that Douglas was not a Catholic (or a formal member of any other organized religious group). The purpose of another half-column story on the front page was to make it clear that Lincoln had publicly condemned the actions of John Brown and did not object to Brown's execution. Charles Leib, the editor, was a political operative with a murky background who had previously edited a Democratic campaign newspaper on behalf of the Buchanan campaign in 1856. Intense blue cloth with gilt lettering on backstrip and front cover. 20cm. Recased (new endpapers). Some bubbling/wrinkling of cloth on back cover. Ends of joints scuffed. Extremities rubbed (minor fraying at cover corners). Spine slightly sloped. Scattered marginal soiling on text-pages. No jacket. As with other copies we've had, the photo listed as facing page 251 actually faces page 240. The photo listed as facing page 241 (and usually found facing page 224) is not present. An unusual, but not unique, copy of the first edition of Micheaux's first novel since we have seen at least two other copies in this intense blue cloth with gilt lettering during our five decades of buying and selling unusual African Americana. Churchtown: E, C. Yeats at the Cuala Press, Churchtown, Dundrum, County Dublin, 1915. Very Good. Jack W. Yeats. Each number consists of a single sheet folded to form four pages. The final page is blank on all issues. Issues generally feature three illustrations, with the smaller 2 usually hand-colored and the largest in black and white. The larger picture is one of the two handcolored in three of the numbers present. One issue has four small hand-colored illustrations and no large one, colored or uncolored. 28 cm. Tear in right margin and another in left margin on both leaves on one issue -- Fifth Year, No. 2 (July, 1912). Chipping and soiling in top margin one issue -- Seventh Year No. 5 issue (Oct., 1915). Also some other lesser soiling, browning and wear but overall an appealing group of these highly collectible Cuala Press publications.
