London: George Allen, 1894. First Thus. Very Good. Iconic original green publisher's cloth binding stamped ornately in gilt to spine and front board with the peacock design. All edges gilt. Green coated endpapers. Frontispiece with tissue guard and illustrations by Hugh Thomson. A Very Good copy only with some of the gilt near the crown flaked off. Some discloration to the rear board, a few burn-marks to the closed text block (foredge), and an early gift inscription on the half-title. Text block generally in good condition, but with a bit of foxing throughout. Austen was not yet 20 (like Elizabeth Bennet) when she drafted the novel, under the title First Impressions, between October 1796 and August 1797. Declined by the publisher Cadell, it subsequently underwent major revisions including a title change to Pride & Prejudice. Finally, in late 1812, the novel was accepted by Egerton and published in early 1813. The book sold well and was obviously much talked about, not least because of the unknown… Leer más

Illustrated by Hugh Thomas, and edition colloqually known as "The Peacock Edition," though in a variant binding that has no elaborate gilt peacock to the front cover. Very Good with lean to binding, wear to corners and spine ends, chipping and rubbing tot title label, cloth lightly stained, small area of wear to cloth at top of rear spine joint. Former owner name to front free endpaper, pages tanned and lightly foxed.

First edition thus, American issue with Macmillan imprint at base of spine. 476pp. Bound in publisher's dark green cloth stamped with an ornate gilt peacock design, illustrated by Hugh Thomson, all edges gilt. Very Good+ with lean to binding, light bump to bottom edge of rear board and faint staining to rear board, front and rear inner hinges with webbing exposed, tear to edge of front free endpaper, contents browned.
