In an edition 1st issued with 20 tissue-guarded black and white steel-engraved plates by Charles Heath after drawings by Richard Westall. Xx, 371; [iv], 388; [vi], 367; [vi], 436 pp. Polished brown calf with gilt rules and extra gilt spines. Boards detached and lacking from Vol I. Rear board of Vol IV detached and front tenuously attached. Extra gilt spines still bright and complete. Vol I & II have light damp lines bottom 1/4 of the plates, not showing on text pages. Vol I has light to moderate damp staining to the first few leaqves and is lacking the fron marbled flyleaf. Prior ownership penned front blank endpages each volume. With faults, Good only ... Oversize book may require additional charges for expedited or international shipping. .

Dublin.: Thomas Ewing., 1766. Contemporary full brown calf, raised bands, red and black spine labels, blue edges. . Good, moderate wear to corners and spine ends, old library bookplates to pastedowns, some outer joints split, but boards still attached, contents clean and tight. . 12mo., 17x10 cm.. An uncommon early edition of the Smollett translation. weight: 2.2 lb. Translated by Smollett. 12 engraved plates.

London: T. Osborne, et al., 1765. Third Edition. Good. Hayman. 4 vols.; 8vo, 6 1/2 x 4 in. (165 x 102 mm) , vol. 1: (6), xl, 293; vol. 2: (1), 314; vol. 3: 910, xi, 331; vol. 4: 91), 322. With 28 copperplate engravings designed by F. Hayman and engraved by G. V. Neist; all are signed by both artist and engraver; all have "Vol" and "p." indications, except those for Vol. I., which have "p." indications only. Three-quarter tan calf binding with marbled paper, all edges stained yellow, gilt title, decorations and raised bands on spine. The antique bindings have a little expected aging or rubbing to the leather and a 1.5 cm chip to the head of vol. 3. Front hinges cracked in vols. 1 & 4, but all four bindings are sound and sturdy, the textblock lightly aged, with some occasional spotting and toning, but overall quite fresh. Bookplate of J. Tobias Smollett's Don Quixote first appeared in 1755 and was for many years the most popular English-language version of Cervantes's masterpiece. However, soon after the start of the nineteenth century, its reputation began to suffer. Rival translators, literary hucksters, and careless scholars initiated or fed a variety of charges against Smollett - even plagiarism. For almost 130 years no publisher risked reprinting it. Redemption began in 1986, when the distinguished Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes, in his foreword to a new edition of Smollett's translation, declared it to be "the authentic vernacular version" of Don Quixote in English.
