Descripción:
New York: Published for the Facsimile Text Society by Columbia University Press, 1931. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus. Hardcover. Good. This is Volume 6 of The Facsimile Text Society's Series I: Language and Literature volumes. The text of both the French language and English language versions of this work are included, with the French language text appearing first in this volume. [14], 68, [4], 50, iii, [1] pages. This copy is ex-library with the usual library stamps and markings. Both pamphlet editions were issued in Paris, one in French and the other in English, within two months of each other at the most, in spite of the fact that the Baudry edition (in English) bears the date 1831, and the Paulin edition (in French), 1832. The Baudry edition would normally be considered the first because of its earlier date, and would therefore be of the greater interest to students and collectors of Cooper, were it not for the special circumstance attaching to the issue of the Paulin edition.…

New York: John Wiley, 1834. 1/4 cloth. Very Good. The 1834 1st edition. A solid, tight copy. Very light staining along the panel edges, one or two tiny gashes at the spine. Foxing as well to the pastedowns and endsheets and, less so, along the preliminaries. Former owner name also ("P.G. Fuller") to the front pastedown. Still though, very presentable and VG in its light-blue boards over dark-green 1/4 cloth spine.

1834. COOPER, J[ames] Fenimore. A Letter to His Countrymen. Original cloth-backed printed boards. New York: John Wiley, 1834. First edition. BAL 3866. The first book with Cooper's name on the title page. Cooper, after living in Europe for seven years, "experienced a profound shock on his return to America. He missed the simplicity, the decorum, the private and public virtue, the enlightened patriotism which he had romantically declared to be natural to Americans. He now discovered that the ideal wilderness of his fantasy did not exist. In his efforts to preach reform and a return to the old virtues, he grew intemperate and shrill, as in "A Letter to His Countrymen...."--DAB. Spine repaired and some foxing, but a very good copy of an extremely scarce book.

New York: Nov 22, 1845. 1 page, in blue ink. 4to. Bifolium. Some fading to ink, smudging in blank margins, old folds, very good. 1 page, in blue ink. 4to. To his publishers, with mention of "Old Ironsides" Cooper writes to his Philadelphia publishers Carey & Hart: "Here I am and shall be until the middle of next week, when I shall pay you a visit. If you have any thing that presses send it here. Old Ironsides is far advanced, and will be finished while I am below. What has become of the first vol?" Cooper's profile of "Old Ironsides," i.e. the U.S.S. Constiution was not published until 1853, two years after Cooper's death. Carey & Hart brought out Cooper's Lives of Distinguished American Naval Officers in 1846 in two volumes, to which his question presumably pertains.
