Green cloth binding with gilt titling on the spine and front cover. Clean text; xii, 228 pages, v; with three pages of publishers adverts. Hardy provides at the end the Contents of the Second and Third Parts, "Subject to revision." Very fresh and bright. Previous-owner signature (1906) on the FFEP; a few faint marks on the front cover.. Straight, lightly rubbed, endpapers foxed, occasional scattered foxing: Very Good. The first issue "was ready for publication in December 1903, but the American printers had not finished their edition. The book was therefore kept back because of copyright law, the title-page cancelled, and a new one altering the date to 1904 substituted. In this form it was finally published at 4s. 6d. in an edition of 1,000 copies, 13 January 1904. Copies with the title-page uncancelled and date d1903 are less rare than has been assumed, but there is no evidence the book was ever sold in this state." PURDY p.120-3.

New York: The MacMillan Company, 1931 Reprint dated 1931, likely rebound from the 3-in-1 issue of that year? (There is only a single copyright and title page amongst the three volumes here.) Hard cover, 16 mo (measuring 5 1/4 x 7 5/8 inches), rebound in a near contemporary fine binding of three- quarter crushed blue morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, with gilt banding to edge of leather, five raised cords to the spine, with titles and date in gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Green watercolor effect paste downs. No binder's signature in evidence. Collation: (2), xxii, 228 (2),Vol I. (2), xiii, 302 (2), Vol. II. (2) viii, 355, (2)pp., Vol. III. Condition: Very Good. Minor wear to joints. Small gouge to foot of spine Vol. II. Generally the books are clean, tight and only gently age-toned. This work has been described as poetic drama, written in blank verse, and not intended for performance. Author Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) first published the work in the years 1903, 1905 and 1908.… Leer más

A mixed set (as usual) of the British edition; all are uniformly bound in green cloth with gilt 'TH' monogram on cover, which indicates that vols. 1 & 2 were remaindered copies rebound to be issued as a set after the 3rd volume was published. Vol. 1 is the 2nd printing, 1904 (the 1st is very rare), in good-only condition; the ffep is torn out, and the blank page after it torn about halfway down at the hinge. Sm. bookplate on front pastedown (in all 3 vols.); spine also sunned to brown. Vol. 2, 1906, is apparently 1st edition but a reissue with the new binding and a half-title page. Good+ condition; spine ends and corners bumped; crack starting at last page; cracked at pp128, 209 and 273; unsunned. Vol. 3 is the 1st edition, 1908. It is in fair condition as book is broken at half-title page (only a few threads of fabric attach the board to the textblock at the half-title page), sunned spine that has a short tear at head, pp354-355 darkened, cracked at p1.
