Only flaw to book is fading to top 1/4" of spine; dust jacket missing corresponding top 1/4" of spine panel, some fading to black as expected. Overall, a very nice copy. Hanley's writing explored the lives and struggles of working-class people, often in stark and realistic terms. His experiences growing up in poverty in Liverpool and working in a variety of jobs gave him firsthand knowledge of the conditions faced by working-class people, and this informed his writing.

This, his second and best-known novel, is about a young boy who suffers brutal neglect and homosexual exploitation. Hanley, from Liverpool, had gone to sea at age seventeen but jumped ship in Canada in 1917 to join the Canadian army, with which he fought briefly in WWI. When the boy of the book's title goes to sea as a thirteen-year-old stowaway, he is subjugated to homosexual abuse. It caused a sensation when published in England. The 1931 first trade edition was expurgated, and the 1934 second edition was successfully prosecuted for obscenity. This copy shows its age by some yellowing of the paper and there is a stain on the front cover--otherwise in excellent condition.

This is the first unexpurgated edition since 1934, when the publisher, Boriswood, was prosecuted for obscene libel, paid a hefty fine, and ultimately closed. Introduction by Anthony Burgess. First edition thus. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket. With a folded and creased copy of the publisher's perspectus laid in, on the back of which is a typed letter signed (TLS) by Hanley's friend and biographer, Frank G. Harrington (to whom Hanley dedicated the limited edition of Lost). The letter is addressed to Linnea Gibbs, author of James Hanley: A Bibliography. Both Harrington and Gibbs are mentioned in Burgess' introduction.

The boards and spine have no wear; save a 1/3 inch tear at the lower edge of the rear spine. There are some smudges on the boards. The spine has moderate darkening with pristine lettering. The pages and endpages are clean, with no markings or folds. There is a prior owner name penned on the free end page. No jacket. Not ex-lib. No remainder mark.

Limited to 145 copies plus 15 presentation copies, this is copy #1 SIGNED by James Hanley on the limitation page and inscribed to Shayle Gardner and again SIGNED by James Hanley on the front endpaper. Original brown buckram covers with a leather spine label affixed over the embosed spine lettering. The covers have uneven soiling and a small (1/8") hole about a third of the way down on the front spine gutter. The leather label has been scraped through the "J" and "HAN" of the author's name, revealing the corresponding embossed name on the spine. There is light offsetting to both endpapers and there is lightly penciled data, from a former bookseller, on the front endpaper and pastedown. Overall, about very good.
