Longmans, Green and Co, 1897. Hardcover. Good. 714p. 'Edinburgh Edition.' 'Edited by his sister, Lady Trevelyan.' Volume VI only. No jacket. Burgandy cloth with pasted-down spine labeling. This label is heavily yellowed, shows some foxing, and is chipping around edges. Boards are well-rubbed and have some dampstaining. Light bumping to edges. Bookplate on front pastedown has offset into ffep. Pages are a little yellowed, but look clean. except for a small waterstain to the top edges of the rear endpapers. Issued uncut, and not all pages have been opened. Some have some small nicks and tears in the fore edge from careless opening. It may have lost a rear flyleaf, as there is a little bit of paper sticking out of the gutter between the last page of the text and the rfep. Spine breaks at either end (between half-title and title page and between p712-713); a little webbing is visible in the front break but the binding is still sound. Size: 8vo - over 7 3/4 in - 9 3/4 in Tall. Year: 1897.

WIth an engraved frontispiece and and two engraved plates of Roman scenes, head- and tail-pieces throughout, red ruled borders to each page of text. 8vo, publisher’s original olive cloth extensively decorated in black and gilt on the upper cover and spine, a.e.g. vi, 215 pp. A nice copy, the binding a bit mellowed by time but still attractive. ILLUSTRATED. A nice antique copy of Macaulay’s poetical writings. It includes the “Lays of Ancient Rome” and all the “Miscellaneous Poems” and “Inscriptions”.

Hardcover. ; Orangish cloth cover with gilt and black embossed Victorian design is frayed at corners and spine caps with bumped corners but clean, bright, and in good+ condition. Boards and spine are straight. Binding is tight. Gilt page edges all the way around are scuffed but still bright. Gift inscription on front end sheet with 3" tear. Red bordered pages are toned but clean and very good. .

Very Good/No DJ. 4.75 x 7.4". 2 Two hardcover volumes, bound in half calf leather over marbled boards (brown and tan) with burgundy and gold detail. Marbling (brown and tan) is repeated on inside covers and free end papers. Covers of both books in very good condition, with light edge and surface wear. Spines have gild lettering, symbols and raised bands separating the 6 sections. Joints and bindings are structurally very good, with some stress to the paper of the interior joints. Clean pages, lightly tanned- Top edges gilt. I grade these as in Very Good condition.

Longmans, Green, and Co., 1871. Hardcover. Good. Eight volumes, 1871 publication date on title pages. Brown leather spine and tips over brown boards. The leather has some wear, especially to edges of the spine and corners. A couple of the leather spine covers have been re-glued, it appears. The endpapers appear to be a re-do, and they and the whole interior are very good -- solid and clean. No marks or names. Top edge gilt.

Spines in six compartments separated by raised bands, gilt lettering in two compartments, intricate gilt tooling in the remainder. Marbled endpapers. Top edges gilt. First vol. has frontispiece portrait with tissue guard. Armoral bookplate of Howell Wharton Bickley (1842-80) to each front pastedown. "MButler" penciled on top of three bookplates. A handsome set, particularly when shelved. All volumes unmarked, tightly bound, square and clean. No evident repairs. Interiors are in exceptional condition for books nearly 150 years old, with only slight tanning. Exteriors show a good deal of reading and shelf wear and general abrasion. Rubbing and chipping at hinges and spine ends. A 1.5 inch gouge mars the spine of Vol. 5. Dents to top and bottom edges of the rear covers of Vols. 5 and 7. Bound in publishers's polished brown calf over dark green cloth boards, gilt coat of arms on front covers, spines with gilt titling and gilt-ruled compartments (slight wear along edges of covers, some corners slightly bumped, minor rubbing to spines on two volumes).
