Englishman Mungo Park spent 1795-96 in the West African areas along the Senegal and Gambia rivers and details customs, religions, commerce, slave trade, etc. His second journey in 1805 resulted in his death along with all the other 43 Europeans in the group. The last chapter gives details of other European discoveries in Africa to 1864. Bound in 3/4 rown calf and black cloth. Gold insignia on front board and gold decoration on spine. Marbled endpapers and all edges marbled. Small inked name on half-title page. Leather is somewhat stained and is rubbed at edges.

Firs published in 1799, an especially lovely copy of this 1844 reprint edition that gave readers a description of daily life in west Africa. "Park was sent by the African Association to trace the course of the Niger River from its source. He recounts tales of the Mandingo country and the city of Timbuktu. He made two such trips to Africa and was killed during a tribal altercation in 1812." (Blockson)
