It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. The book plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Viscomte Anne de Keroual de St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier enlisted as a private under the name Champdivers, after his capture by the British.

Unifinished at Stevenson's death, it was finished by Quiller-Couch whose work begins at Chapter XXXI. Laid in article by J. C. Furnas entitled "The Road of the Loving Heart: Robert Louis Stevenson in Samoa" published in the Atlantic in 1951. (Few owner notations.) Furnas believed that a revival of interest was coming for Stevenson just as it had for Fitzgerald. .
