Many of my books are from the 19th Century. Books were not written in at that time, instead an index card with info. Am enclosing the one found in this book for you. Enjoy.
The stirring drama of the Civil War and Reconstruction is brought vividly to life in this really magnificent novel. Unparalleled drama, action and romance flower within the breathtaking wonders of this inspired spectacle of the written word and the most magnificently, exciting love story, ever! First published in 1936, Gone with the Wind sold 50,000 copies on its first day, and two million after a year. Even though it is 1,037 pages long, readers all over the world snatched up the book; by 1937 it was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and the film rights had been sold to David O. Selznick. You can feel the tightness of NEW.About the book: "In the spring of 1984, I went to the northwest of France, to Normandy, to prepare an NBC documentary on the fortieth anniversary of D-Day, the massive and daring Allied invasion of Europe that marked the beginning of the end of Adolf Hitler's Third Reich. There, I underwent a life-changing experience. As I walked the beaches with the American veterans who had returned for this anniversary, men in their sixties and seventies, and listened to their stories, I was deeply moved and profoundly grateful for all they had done. Ten years later, I returned to Normandy for the fiftieth anniversary of the invasion, and by then I had come to understand what this generation of Americans meant to history. It is, I believe, the greatest generation any society has ever produced."

In this inimitable, beloved classic—graceful, lucid and lyrical—Anne Morrow Lindbergh shares her meditations on youth and age; love and marriage; peace, solitude and contentment as she set them down during a brief vacation by the sea. Drawing inspiration from the shells on the shore, Lindbergh's musings on the shape of a woman's life bring new understanding to both men and women at any stage of life. A mother of five, an acclaimed writer and a pioneering aviator, Lindbergh casts an unsentimental eye on the trappings of modernity that threaten to overwhelm us: the time-saving gadgets that complicate rather than simplify, the multiple commitments that take us from our families. And by recording her thoughts during a brief escape from everyday demands, she helps readers find a space for contemplation and creativity within their own lives.

First published in Paris in 1955 and originally banned in America, J. P. Donleavy's first novel is now recognized the world over as a masterpiece and a modern classic of the highest order. Set in Ireland just after World War II, The Ginger Man is J. P. Donleavy's wildly funny, picaresque classic novel of the misadventures of Sebastian Dangerfield, a young American ne'er-do-well studying at Trinity College in Dublin. Dangerfield's appetite for women, liquor, and general roguishness is insatiable--and he satisfies it with endless charm.

Yet of this important work we learn little; we are instead treated to truisms like, "A newspaper is not referred to as `the daily miracle' for nothing.'' Bradlee is candid about having been scooped by the New York Times on the Pentagon papers and the role that scooping had on the Post's devotion to Watergate: "We found ourselves in the humiliating position of having to rewrite the competition.'' About the book: They are ten outstanding women of the twentieth century. Each had an aura. They were mighty warriors and social leaders, women of aspirations who persevered. They lived through the Great Depression and a world war. Circumstances did not defeat them. They played on Broadway and in Washington. They had glamour, style, and intelligence. They dressed up the world. In Great Dames, Marie Benner introduces us to a pantheon of women whose lives are both gloriously individual and yet somehow universal. Her subjects range from Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, who found happiness in her last decade, to Constance Baker Motley, who argued Brown versus the Board of Education before the United States Supreme Court, to Luise Rainer, who won two Academy Awards by age thirty, then fled Hollywood for good. Kirkus Review: The author's penchant for the absurd (How to Murder the Man of Your Dreams, 1995, etc.) reaches full flower in this off-the-wall take on English aristocracy. Its focus is Gossinger Hall, dating from the 12th-century, where Sir Henry Gossinger, plebeian-born wife Mabel, and permanent houseguest cousin Sophie Doffit are in residence, along with a staff headed by aristocratic butler Hutchins, whose gentle care is lavished on the silver collection—a center of attention for tourists and tour buses—and on his orphaned 18-year-old granddaughter Flora, his charge from age three. Outside chores are handled by odd-job man Mr. Tipp, whose forebears, like Hutchins's, go back generations at the Hall. Heir to it all is Sir Henry's nephew, 30ish Vivian—that is, he's heir until the day Sir Henry, seemingly intent on righting an old wrong, announces he's… Leer más
