Founded in 1984 by Wild at Heart author Gifford, Black Lizard Press reprinted over 90 mid-century crime fiction titles during its existence, reviving interest in some of the grittier but neglected writers like Thompson. 'The French seem to appreciate best Thompson's brand of terror,' writes Gifford. '[He] fulfills the French notion of both noir and maudit, the accursed and self-destructive.' Cover illustrator Jim Kirwan, who like Thompson is a native Oklahoman, mocked up his moody concept art after being given only three lines from each Black Lizard title he was assigned. 177 pp.

Black Sparrow Press began posthumously publishing Fante's then out-of-print works in the late 1970s, at the suggestion of house favorite Charles Bukowski ('Fante was my god,' he said), who had happened upon the writer's work in the LA Public Library. The Road to Los Angeles, Fante's first novel and chronologically the second in the Arturo Bandini saga, went unpublished until 1985. A classic by process-oriented psychology innovator Mindell, who studied under Franz Niklaus Riklin and Marie-Louise von Franz, and caused controversy in the late 1980s in the sleepy beach town of Yachats, Oregon, when he and his wife made plans to build a Jungian seminar venue amid outcry from locals still spooked from the events at Rajneeshpuram a few hours away. A collection of essays first published in Crowley's journal, The Equinox, and here prefaced and expanded by Regardie, whose on-again, off-again relationship with The Beast began in 1928 when the younger man moved to Paris to work as his secretary. Nine years later, after Regardie returned to the US, the two had a falling out via correspondence: Crowley, making fun of Regardie's adoption of the name, Francis (after St. Francis of Assissi), dismissively addressed him as 'Frank', and Regardie responded by calling Crowley both 'Alice' and 'a contemptible bitch'. 241 pp. Featured Rare & Collectible.
