Coated brown endpapers with small bookseller's label to front pastedown. Lacks frontispiece portrait. Light foxing and thumbing to title page. A few pages roughtly opened at top edge. Quite scarce, about good overall. Events up to Jackson's resignation in 1862.

Near fine with light soil to rear board, bottom front corner slightly bumped. In very good dustjacket, light soil and minor edgewear. Rear jacket panel has photo of Dahl and his wife, actress Patricia Neal. Dahl's third collection of stories.

1648. [PHOTOGRAPHY - JAPANESE] Moriyama DAIDO^. DAIDO hysteric no.6 1994. Tokyo, hysteric glamour, 1993. Large square folio, illustrated wrappers, 177 images (many double page) over 360 pages. Limited edition. This copy has a bit of mild creasing marks to the covers but overall in very good condition. Remarkable work in black and white - dark, grainy and ominous - certainly not a tourist's brochure view of Japan. Daido is among the most important of Japan's contemporary photographers. Hysteric Glamour, the publishers, have produced a seminal series of monographs all through the 90's and to the present day, capturing the essence of the latest trends in Japanese photography and presenting them with great sympathy and skill.

Illustrated throughout with wonderful drawings, some in color. Insects and children and dance instruction - the cover is by the inimitably charming Takei Takeo. There are stories and songs - a great little periodical. Very good overall.

About good condition. Boards worn, especially at corners. Hinges slightly tender. Undated early ink ownership on front pastedown. A2 - A3 detached, laid in, no loss. Occasional early ink and pencil notes and underlining: ink appears similar to owner's signature, pencil notations seem more recent. A few pages have slight loss at edges, not affecting text. This copy precedes by two years the first trade edition, slightly expanded, which was published in 1889 by Houghton, Mifflin and Company. Illustrated with thirteen plates, including views, taken from photographs and engravings, and a portrait of the author. vi,624 pp. Large pape copy. 30.5 x 22.5 cm. Octavo, green cloth. Mostly clean internally, though the preliminary and closing leaves are foxed, including the frontispiece portrait of Dana, and a few plates have light marginal foxing. One leaf (p. v-vi) is sprung, with a corner chip, and another leaf (p. 121-122) has a closed tear at the inside margin. The bookblock is over-opened in several places near the center. The binding is worn at perimeters, with corners bumped, and a stained and abraded spine label which is no longer legible; in general, the cloth is scuffed, with light soiling and some spotting.
