1943. KABUKI: KANJINCHO, YOSHITSUNE-SEMBONZAKURA (Scene of Sushiya), KISEN HOSHI. [Program for a performance] At the Kabuki Theatre, Tokyo, on Friday, November 19th, 1943. With comments by Yui Yokoyama. [N.p., N.d.] 34 pp. 7 1/8 by 5 inches (18 x 12.8 cm). Pamphlet format, side stapled at the center, glued into plain wrappers with program information printed to upper wrapper. Underlining and marginal notes in red pencil. The paper is evenly browned throughout. Upper wrapper is grease stained, with slight staining to the first text leaf as well. An adequate example of an ephemeral piece.

Descripción:
1879. [KABUKI] OKANO Seki, editor. KABUKI SHIMPO^ Long run of the Magazine. Published from 1879 until its demise in 1897, the KABUKI NEWS was the primary organ of traditional Kabuki theatre in Japan. At various stages published by the so-called Kabuki Shimpo^ Publishing Company and later by Kitahara Suehara (Genrokukan) in To^kyo^, nearly 1700 numbers of the journal were produced, with news of performances, b+w woodcut illustrations and in some later issues full-color woodblock covers or frontispieces designed by the ukiyo-e masters of the day. A remarkable resource for students of the history of Kabuki in the Meiji era. The issues were bound in wrappers. We have 538 issues in hand in very clean condition. Some seem to have been removed from multivolume bindings but are complete. So, almost one third of the total published. A useful and important find.

Go-Kashiwabara Tennou. 3 volumes, complete. 27.5 x 19.5 cm. String-bound, Japanese-style, fukuro-touji. In the midst of the bloody Ounin Wars that wracked Kyouto and environs for nearly a century, an iconic emaki scroll inscribing the foundation of the Buddhist hall Shinnyodo, was created in 1524.... . The calligraphers included the Emperor Go-Kashiwabara (who died two years later)... The scroll painter was Kamonnosuke [Fujiwara] Hisakuni 掃部助久国.... This printed version, based on the scroll, was printed in the second half of the 17th century, when Japan had already entered an era of peace and prosperity. One could see this printed work as a reflection upon the great chaos of former times. The calligrapher for this printed version was Kitamuki Unchiku and the artist for this book was Kaihou Yuuchiku. Profusely illustrated…

1942. [OCEAN LINERS] Osaka Shosen Kaisha. UMI Vol. 12, #5. Osaka, Showa 17 [1942]. 24+ pp. 25.6 x 18 cm. Though OSK was later bought out by Mitsui after the war, at the time they published "THE SEA" as their monthly magazine, they had routes girdling the world. As a rival of NYK Lines, they filled its pages with travelogues, as well as images of the ships and the well-heeled passengers. By the time this issue was published in 1942, the war with the Allies had begun in earnest and the quality of the paper and general tone of the news was declining. Soon most of the great ships would be requisitioned for the war effort and their era would become a thing of the past. Very good.

Descripción:
[KAKEMONO - HANGING SCROLL] Kamisaka SEKKA, artist. "YAMAGA YU^KEIZU" PAINTING ON THE THEME OF A MOUNTAIN COTTAGE AT EVENING. Hanging scroll, image size 120 X 37.5 cm. Beautifully mounted on brocade with dark wooden jiku. The painting is signed and sealed by Sekka (1866-1942), the foremost master of Rimpa painting in the 20th Century in Japan. The style is that of late Sekka Rimpa quite reminiscent of his work in the book UTA-E, which was published in 1934. Probably from the late 1920s to the very beginning of the 30s. The brushwork and calligraphy are first-rate, the presentation impeccable. A lovely evocation of tradition in 20th century Japan as the pictured woman and her child work and play out of doors in the moonlight (an echo of Yamamba and Kintaro^, perhaps?) In a newish wooden box and outer cardboard slipcase with written title label.

1921. [Kakemono 掛け物 - Hanging Scroll] Tsuda Seifū 津田青楓, artist "Momohara" Landscape of a Mountain Stream, Dancing Cranes Taishō 10 [1921] Hanging scroll with the image size 135.2 X 33.4 cm. Beautifully mounted on brocade with bone jiku. The painting is signed and sealed by Tsuda Seifū 津田青楓 (1880-1978), an extraordinarily influential artist and designer who not only painted in oils and in traditional watercolor on silk and paper, but also created designs and bookbindings. A protege of such masters as the designer Furuya Kōrin 古谷紅鱗 (1875-1910) and the author and poet Natsume Sōseki (1867-1916) and later an influence upon generations of creative artists, Tsuda Seifū has here created a free and easy Nihonga work in color ink on silk, dated Taishō 10 [1921] and sealed by him. Its eccentric spirit seems to have a touch of Tomioka Tessai 富岡鉄斎 (1836/7-1924) to it. Certainly they must have met, as Seifū illustrated several design books with calligraphed encomia…
