Descripción:
n.p.: n.p., 1927. Near fine.. Souvenir real photo postcard of surfing pioneer Duke Kahanamoku, with contemporary annotation. Taken on Waikiki Beach, this early image (ca. 1912-1915, likely by R.J. Baker or a photographer from the J.J. Williams Studio) of the swimming and surfing legend is one of his most well-known and reproduced - widely sold and reprinted numerous times in various RPPC formats. The contemporary inscription on the verso of this copy ("This is Duke the champion Hawaiian swimmer who won the Olympic swimming race somewhere in Europe. He is standing by his surf board. Think this was taken a few years ago as he is much heavier built now and looks older."), together with its square-cornered Azo stampbox, date this card to about 1927, a few years after his final Olympic medals at the 1924 Paris games. Kahanamoku would parlay his Olympic success into a successful career staging swimming exhibitions around the world, events into which he eventually began incorporating surfing. These… Leer más

Descripción:
Boston: Meador Publishing Company, 1937. First edition. Very good plus.. First printing of this psychology book written with the aim of finding and removing the "cause" of homosexuality and gender-nonconformity, owned by a doctor who espoused less harmful practices. Though Joseph Nicolosi is generally credited as the founder of the abusive practice now known as "conversion therapy," Samuel Kahn was actually one of its early practitioners and MENTALITY AND HOMOSEXUALITY predates Nicolosi's work by decades. The bulk of Kahn's observations originate from a large study undertaken on 500 prisoners while he was a psychiatrist for the Department of Correction in New York City; "a system of re-education should be developed" (143) he notes in his conclusion. Kahn would later test and apply his theories by founding the Quakerbridge School, which a former student recalled as a "penal colony [...] where I was diagnosed and treated as a 'moral defective and constitutional psychopath'" (Langer). The owner of… Leer más

Descripción:
New York: Abrams, 1966. Very good.. Inscribed first edition of this founding document of performance and environmental art - the first such work by a major publisher, Abrams. A founding document of performance and environmental art, and the first by a major publisher, Kaprow's ASSEMBLAGE, ENVIRONMENTS & HAPPENINGS was originally planned as an official Fluxus publication (see CODEX p. 288), but eventually evolved into this broader book. Artists covered include Robert Rauschenberg, Claes Oldenburg, Red Grooms, and George Segal, with contributions from Wolf Vostell, George Brecht, Kaprow and others. The recipient is almost certainly photojournalist Paul Berg, whose photos are included in this volume and fall roughly where Kaprow suggests they should (though there is no such plate 164). Berg photographed and covered Kaprow's happening "Push and Pull" for the ST. LOUIS POST DISPATCH in 1963. The uncommon hardcover issue of this important resource, it is scarce signed, especially with any kind of… Leer más

Descripción:
New York: n.p., 1970. Overall very good.. Collection of original art and collage from New York underground artist Kasoundra Kasoundra. Kasoundra moved to NYC in 1960 and quickly made herself a fixture among Village bohemians. Chelsea Hotel regular, illustrator to the Olympia Press, assistant to Edward Gorey and Joseph Cornell, co-dedicee of Germaine Greer's landmark THE FEMALE EUNUCH ("For Kasoundra, who makes magic out of skins and skeins and pens, who is never still, never unaware, riding her strange destiny in the wilderness of New York, loyal and bitter, as strong as a rope of steel and as soft as a sigh"), ALICE'S RESTAURANT actress, and Harry Smith collaborator, for decades Kasoundra wove her way Zelig-like through various downtown scenes. And the collection of works offered here in many ways captures her overlapping talents and associations. From a strikingly-altered copy of a Lou Reed LP and an exquisitely collaged Cornell-esque artist's book, to a pair of darkly subversive manuscript tales… Leer más

Descripción:
(London): (BCM/Situationist International), [ca. early '70s]. Very good.. One of many early reprints of this key situationist text, among which quite a few were unauthorized - but this edition published by the official British wing of the Situationist Intertnational, with their introductory text. Originally titled DE LA MISÈRE EN MILIEU ÉTUDIANT, the text was written in 1966 by the situationist Mustapha Khayati, in collaboration with the Strasbourg student union. After its publication, the text was met with immense public opprobrium, resulting in the shutting-down of the student union by federal courts, but the book remained pivotal for the student movement and helped set the stage for the massive student/worker protests of May 1968. A particularly charming version, illustrated on its covers and throughout the text with segments from the Marxist comic strip produced by Strasbourg students, "The Return of the Durutti Column." 9.25'' x 6''. Pictorial card wrappers.Light wear, soil externally.… Leer más

Descripción:
(New York): Collier Books, 1969. Fine.. First paperback edition of Kelley's sharp comedy of the anxieties and fantasies of '60s white America. A "merciless satire on the themes of white fear, guilt, and hypocrisy," sending its ineffectual protagonist, a mediocrity who works in advertising, on a "picaresque journey through black New York" (Schulz). A student of John Hawkes and Archibald Macleish at Harvard, lecturer at the University of Paris and Sarah Lawrence College, the recipient of the Anisford-Wolf Book Award for Lifetime Achievement, Kelley earned early success and considerable critical acclaim at the outset of his career, though his fame would drastically diminish by the end of his life: His 1962 essay for the New York Times, "If You're Woke You Dig It" - cited by the OED as the first published usage of "woke" in its modern sense - has attracted as much mention in recent years as his many literary accomplishments. DEM was, Kelley said, based on observation: "I know rich white people. I know… Leer más
