It is not a war "Action" novel but is set behind the front lines in Moscow and is told through the eyes of a Polish Jew who has enlisted in the Russian Army. It highlights the antisemitism in both the German and Soviet troops and the Russian population at the time. A highly moving account based very largely on the author's experience. Mann himself was a Polish Jew who fled to the Soviet Union from Nazi occupied Poland and became a teacher prior to enlisting in the Soviet Red Army.
