Complete set of Ed Sanders's short-lived "Quote of the Week" from his notorious press, featuring three brief selections from Harry Fainlight, John Ashbery, and Kenneth Koch. Run off over the course of several weeks in the fall of 1964, these three gossipy, insular, self-referential broadsides are among the most ephemeral and quintessentially FU productions to be pulled off of Sanders' Lower East Side mimeograph. The first, dated Sept. 5th, is by Harry Fainlight (1935-1982) and transcribes a piece of a conversation Fainlight delivered at Bickfords in Times Square: "I have piles / I thought it was / gonorrhea / it's terrible / I have to / do all / kinds of / sordid blow job / scenes / now." The second, dated Sept. 14th, records poet John Ashbery's reaction (overheard at a party at Bill Berkson's on East 57th Street) to Ed Sanders' recently-issued TOE-QUEEN POEMS. In addition to his original work, Sappho's Hymn to Aphrodite and Poem 31 ("Phainetai moi...") are both reproduced in the original Greek, with Sanders' English translations and grammatical notes looping around and through the text. 4to. White stapled wraps. Lightly shelfworn and toned along edges; corners bumped and rubbed. Interior pages very faintly toned on endpapers only; otherwise clean and unmarked. Unpaginated.

Rare complete 13-issue run of Sanders's infamous little magazine of the mimeo revolution - in extraordinary condition. A difficult run to assemble under even the best of circumstances - the first issue was handed out for free on the streets of the Lower East Side, both the "Mad Motherfucker" and final issues were subject to confiscation during the Peace Eye raid that ultimately killed FU, and issue 5.1 remains almost inexplicably elusive - this set was put together by the original purchaser and literally pulled from a cabinet in the Village where it had been stored undisturbed for decades. As such, the condition of nearly every issue is practically as the day they were printed. In particular, the "Mad Motherfucker" issue, with its fragile thermofax cover by Andy Warhol, is stunningly well-preserved. A nice association, inscribed to Ken Mikolowski, who with his wife Ann founded the Alternative Press. For more than 30 years, the Alternative Press published unbound letterpress-printed mail art, including the work of Beat and Black Mountain writers and poets from their native Detroit. Scarce final issue (the fourteenth) of Sander's legendary and infamous mimeo, printed "At a Secret Location on the Lower East Side" - from the library of poet and publisher Kenward Elmslie. In January 1966, Sander's Peace Eye Bookstore was raided by police for distribution of obscene material and copies of FU (including this final issue) were confiscated. It seems reasonable to assume this issue's scarcity (and its terminality) are directly related to this incident. Contributors to this installment include Ted Berrigan, John Wieners, Al Fowler, Gilbert Sorrentino, Robert Kelly, and others - including Joe Brainard, whose longtime partner Kenward Elmslie's copy this is.
