Descripción:
Here is a rare first edition of Dorothy L. Sayers' "Have His Carcase." Sayers was one of the "Queens of Crime," alongside Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh, and Mary Allingham. She was a prolific crime writer during the golden age of crime fiction, and her novel "Have His Carcase" was published during the peak of this golden age. It is the seventh novel to feature Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey and the second to include his love interest, Harriet Vane. Good Condition. Black cloth with red titles to spine. Binding is firm. Both hinges are moderately cracked causing boards to be slightly loose. Pen marks from previous owner to front pastedown and free end paper. Pages are clean with minimal tanning and foxing. Boards have moderate edge-wear with some fraying to spine ends and corners. Otherwise a sound copy.

Descripción:
This is an incredibly rare complete set of Shakespeare's works dated 1745. After Shakespeare's death in 1616, his plays were collected by his friends John Heminge and Henry Condell, leading to the formation of the First Folio in 1623. Eighty-six years later, Nicholas Rowe became the first modern editor of Shakespeare's work. He addressed various textual issues that arose from the conflicting quartos and folio editions of the plays, which had hitherto corrupted the text. Again, in 1723-1725, Alexander Pope published his edition of Shakespeare's works in six volumes. Both of these editions are highly valuable and sought after, and they paved the way for the 1745 edition published by J. and P. Knapton. The editor of this edition is not named; however, the bookseller's advertisement remarks this edition is 'exactly copied from that lately printed in quarto in Oxford', suggesting the text has been taken from Sir Thomas Hanmer's, former Speaker for The House of Commons, edition published in Oxford in 1743.…

Descripción:
This is Neville Chamberlain's personal copy of J. Shield Nicholson's "A Project of Empire" with his bookplate on the front pastedown. This is particularly interesting because the theme of Nicholson's book centers around Adam Smith's laissez-faire ideas of economics and Chamberlain, who was first a business man and then served as Chancellor of the Exchequer under Ramsey Macdonald's goverment. Also about the time of this book's publication Chamberlain started to become politically active and in 1911 he successfully stood as a Liberal Unionist for Birmingham City Council. Good Condition. Green cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Neville Chamberlain's bookplate to front pastedown. Binding and hinges are firm. Pages are clean. Boards have moderate edge-wear with some bumping to corners. Notable split to bottom of spine and front board joint. Moderate tanning to spine. Debossed stamp on title page with 'Presentation Copy'.

Printed in a limited run of just 250 copies, this edition is rare and features William Smith's detailed description of England from 1588. Edited from the original manuscript housed in the British Museum, this exclusive edition includes an introduction by Henry Wheatley and Edmund W. Ashbee. Published in 1879, it is available solely for subscribers. Within, Smith meticulously unfolds the history and etymology of England's counties. His vivid descriptions encompass the characteristics and histories of key towns in each county, exploring details such as the number of churches, resemblances to other towns across England, environmental features, and the unique history of each town. Smith also offers intriguing insights into some of the 'Wonders In England,' revealing, for instance, the construction of Stonehenge by a former king of England in 470 AD to commemorate the demise of 460 nobles (refer to page 6). Complementing Smith's narrative are 28 chromolithographic plates, including two folding plates…

"The Sports and Pastimes of the People of England" is a fascinating book showcasing the universality and necessity to busy ourselves with humor and recreation. Yet, Strutt's book covers strange and outlandish forms of 'fun' from the Dark Ages, medieval age, and the Restoration period, which now would be considered either bizarre or cruel. This includes bear and horse baiting, boat tilting, hawking, and various forms of jesters dressed in motley. The text is accompanied by 140 black and white illustrations sourced from "ancient paintings." This is the new edition issued in 1839; the first edition was published in 1800. It includes an impressive index by William Hone. Very Good Condition. Debossed, decoarated brown cloth with gilt titles to spine. 140 black and white illustrations.Binding and hinges are firm.Neat previous owner's inscription to front free end paper. Pages are moderately tanned and foxed. Boards have moderate edge-wear with some bumping to corners and soft crushing to spine ends. Light…
