"A novel about traveling salesmen," by this New Orleans-born-and-bred author, well known for his numerous books about that city, in which he lived and worked for his entire life. The book tells "a story that is hard-hitting and realistic, frequently humorous, and filled with a warm understanding" and captures "the loneliness, the frustration, and the basic decency of traveling men." [good solid copy with minimal wear, would grade a little higher but for some discoloration to the cloth along both joints; the jacket is a little edgeworn, with a couple of tiny surface-peel spots on the front panel, and a small irregular hole near the right side of the front panel]. A re-telling of the Biblical story of Jonah (and, eventually, a "sea monster" rather than a whale per se), "an amusing and curiously disconcerting novel," told in such a fashion that "the religious press of the author's native Denmark has not been able to make up its mind whether the book is a satire or a naive confession of faith." I don't really know -- but at least I can say that it's from an era before there was a Thai restaurant on every other block in American cities (and darn few at all outside urban areas); it was written by two Thai ladies with impeccable credentials (one came from "a family of superb cooks," and was married to a prince, to boot); and it was published in Bangkok. (3 B&W photographs) Drawing-room comedy about an eminent violinist, now happily married, who is visited by a former lover. The author revamped the play under a new title, "Perfect Pitch," about ten years after its initial Broadway run in 1964. The playwright was also active as a screenwriter, notably on SABRINA (based on his own play, "Sabrina Fair") and Alfred Hitchcock's VERTIGO. .
