Descripción:
Undated. 4 x 5 inches, in very good condition, some light fold marks, marked ‘Personal, By Hand’ by the King. Royal monogram on envelope flap. King George VI (reigned 1936-1952). Sir Edward Peacock (1871-1962) was made Receiver General to the Duchy of Cornwall, which entailed dealing with the Royal finances, in 1929. For these services, he was knighted by George V in 1934. He was Receiver General until the death of George VI in 1952. Peacock was in Washington, D.C. during World War II, liaising between the United States government and the Bank of England. Just before the war, he and Montagu Norman were asked by Admiral John Henry Godfrey of Naval Intelligence to find him a personal assistant. He found and recruited Ian Fleming, who later wrote the James Bond novels.

Undated [c.1930]. 10 lines, in French (with separate transcription and translation) on card, folio, in fine condition. Pierre Valdagne (1854-1937), French novelist and dramatist. This presentation statement was prepared for publication in the famous anthology Pax Mundi. Livre D'or De La Paix (Geneva, 1932), which contained numerous autograph facsimile statements about the prospects for World Peace. It was prepared by the World League for Peace with the approval of the League of Nations.

See the Dictionary of Canadian Biography for the adventurous missionary career of Pierre Huet de La Valinière (1732-1806), Roman Catholic priest and Sulpician. In 1786 La Valinière published in New York a controversial catechism, Curious and interesting dialogue between Mr. Goodwish and Dr. Breviloq . . . , in both French and English. Two years later he brought out at Albany a 50-page fascicle entitled Vraie histoire, ou simple précis des infortunes, pour ne pas dire, des persécutions qu’a souffert & souffre encore le révérend Pierre Huet de La Valinière. . . . In this publication, as indeed in the first one, the author portrays himself as a martyr to the American cause at the time of the invasion of Canada in 1775–76. Hotel Bristol, Burlington Gardens, 9 & 19 July 1890. Two oblong cards, 2 x 5 inches, written on both sides, with metallic stickers affixed, reading ILLUSION. With an original envelope, forwarded from Buckingham Palace to Harley Street (second stamp affixed, postage due charge deleted). Jean Marie Constantin Joseph "Jan" van Beers (1852 – 1927), Belgian painter and illustrator, the son of the poet Jan van Beers. They are sometimes referred to as Jan van Beers the elder and Jan van Beers the younger. In 1884, Jan Van Beers produced the pen-and-ink sketches for the edition de luxe of his father's poetry. he became the leader of a group of young artists, the "Van Beers clique." This group included the artists Piet Verhaert (1852–1908), Alexander Struys (1852–1941), and Jef Lambeaux (1852–1908). They were well known for their mischievous and eccentric behaviour, including walking around Antwerp dressed in historic costumes.

Robert Vaughan (1795–1868), Congregationalist minister, Professor of History in the University of London, 1830–43, and President of the Independent College, Manchester, 1843-57. He founded, and for a time edited the British Quarterly. He wrote, among various other works, A History of England under the Stuarts, Revolutions of race in English history, Revolutions of History, and a Life of Wycliffe. “Our friend Carleton is a treasure of all treasures ... but beyond him the land does not teem with wisdom, and still less with men willing to give time to our affairs.”

Vaux's knowledge was large and varied, more especially in all that related to oriental antiquities. His Nineveh and Persepolis: an Historical Sketch of Ancient Assyria and Persia, with an Account of the recent Researches in those Countries (1850; 4th ed. 1855), did much to popularise the discoveries of Layard and other travellers.

Grand Hotel Leinfelder, Munchen, undated. In French. 2 pp. 9 x 6 inches, in good condition. Emile Verhaeren (1855-1916), Belgian poet who wrote in the French language, and one of the chief founders of the school of Symbolism. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature six times. He was one of the most prolific poets of his era. His first collection of poems, Les Flamandes, was published in 1883. Inspired by the paintings of Jacob Jordaens, David Teniers and Jan Steen, Verhaeren described in a direct and often provocative, naturalistic way his country and the Flemish people.

He went to England at York and obtained and engagement there in 1850. His London début was made at the Princess's Theatre in 1852. Most of his acting was performed in England. He acted in Dr. Davey (1866); Man o' Airlie (1867); Son of the Soil (1872); As You Like It (1875); Daniel Druce, which ran for one hundred and six times at the Haymarket (1876); and Olivia (1878). He became known as a teacher of elocution and as a writer.

St James Palace, 26 April 1872. 1 page 7 x 4 inches, black edges, with the original envelope (initialled G), both very fine. Count von Gleichen (1833-1891), naval officer, sculptor, courtier. In 1856 he was appointed Flag-Lieutenant to Sir Harry Keppel in China and took a prominent part in the fighting, being present at operations in the Canton river, and at the destruction of a flotilla of war junks in Fatshan creek. For his services in China, Prince Victor was mentioned in despatches London Gazette 1 August 1857, and recommended for the Victoria Cross.
