[46], 282, [20] pp.First Dutch edition of a very interesting history of the Holy Sacrament of Miracles in the Saint Gudele or Gudula Church (from 1962 on the Saint Michiels or Michael’s Cathedral) in Brussels. It was written by Steven (Etienne) Ydens, a canon of this church, and published in French in 1605 (also by Velpius at Brussels) and is here for the first time translated into Dutch. Other Dutch editions were printed, all at Brussels, in 1642 and 1648 by Huybrecht Antoon Velpius and ca. 1662 and in 1672 by Peter de Dobbeleer.The beautifully detailed engravings of God the Father, saints and precious ecclesiastical objects, such as the first image of the relic, crosses and a ciborium, are by Adriaen Collaert (ca. 1560-1618), son-in-law of the draughtsman, engraver and print publisher Philip Galle. [8] pp.A political pamphlet written as a popular dialogue between a (moderate) Hollander and an (uncompromising) Zeelander who happen to meet each other and discuss the peace negotiations that were to lead to the Twelve Years' Truce in 1609. The Zeelander asks if the Hollander has news of the peace negotiations. While the Hollander hopes for a quick settlement, the Zeelander puts more emphasis on a favourable and lasting peace.Slightly browned and some tears on the fold of the outer bifolium. [16] pp.A political pamphlet warning against any dealings with Spain, in the form of a prophetic story of betrayal, the devil and murder, and prophesies by the ten Sibyls of the outcome of the negotiations.Netherlands' help.The present pamphlet contains a curiously cryptic and rather mysterious anti-Spanish tale.With the upper, outer corner of leaf 6 (pp. 11-12) torn off, with the loss of a few words of text, and the last line on the last page has been cut slightly short, affecting only the descending letters. A printer's error appears to have led to the loss of the first few letters of the beginning of the last few lines on the first page, the pamphlet has been disbound before the paper wrappers were glued on, causing the inner leaves to come loose. Some minor soiling and very slight fraying of the head- and fore-edge.
