Gulbenkian, an Armenian born in Turkey, was a central figure in the development of the petroleum resources of the former Ottoman Empire between the two World Wars. His lifelong passion for collecting -- ancient art, sculpture, Old Master, French and English paintings, furniture, carpets, -- was aided by an unfailing eye and business sense. A resident of Portugal from 1942 until his death in 1955, he bequeathed his entire collection of over 5,000 objects, as well as his vast fortune, to a foundation in Lisbon. The museum which houses his collection was opened in 1968.

The catalog contains numerous (prior) installation photographs, but it is unclear how many of the works illustrated were actually in the Dayton's exhibition.
