DAY is arguably Goldsmith's most famous (many would say infamous) book: a precise transcription of every word from one day's issue of the NEW YORK TIMES. As Goldsmith himself described the project: "I am spending my 39th year practicing uncreativity. On Friday, September 1, 2000, I began retyping the day's NEW YORK TIMES, word for word, letter for letter, from the upper left hand corner to the lower right hand corner" (rear cover). Signed limited edition artist's book, appropriating a first edition of Kenneth Goldsmith's epic conceptual poem DAY. A book that plays not only with appropriation, but with ideas of edition and bibliography. On its most obvious level, Johnson here takes Goldsmith's words and work as his own (something Goldsmith himself has been accused of), but in effect additionally alters the original edition size, de facto reducing it to 600 copies (from 700), and thereby rendering the book's colophon wrong. While BlazeVOX sells DIY kits of the same stickers (so you can convert your own copy of Goldsmith's book - although it has itself become rather scarce), this is part of an entirely new issue created by Johnson himself. Beautifully designed (almost certainly by Malanga himself) with two stills of Malanga and Debbie "High School Drop-Out" Caen taken from Andy Warhol's 1965 screentest of the pair (ST37), described on the flyer of a "'stillie' from Andy Warhol's BLACK TIE." Caen was Malanga's girlfrend at the time and the title subject of the poems, a series which remained unpublished until Malanga's NO RESPECT: NEW & SELECTED POEMS 1964-2000 (Black Sparrow).OCLC finds no copies, though Callie Angell locates one in a Warhol "time capsule" at the Warhol Museum in Pittsburg (#79). Lelle was a Virginia-based computer scientist (the included note mentions popular 70s computer systems KRONOS and SCOPE) and these amateur poems show an uncommonly early influence of code and programming. As such they read at times not unlike proto-L=A=N-G=U=A=G=E verse by way of concrete poetry. Titles like "Vector Space," "Debug," "Big Bang Theory," "Matrix Cross Product, "Null Space," and "Binary Gulch," show the clear influence of science, while others ("Paperclip Consciousness," "Cubicle Truth") allude to office-work and even the counterculture ("The Redneck and the Hippie").
