Leavenworth, KS: Journal of the U.S. Cavalry Association, 1911. Offprint. Wraps. VG+/None. Gilpin, a clerk in Upton's HQ, wrote an article for the Cavalry Association by the same title in 1908. The article is found in Dornbusch under Third Iowa Cavalry. This article was then reprinted into this book. This copy seems to be inscribed and signed by Major General James Harrison Wilson, Commander of the Campaign. Looks so real, but isn't!! Strange story: I purchased this book many years ago and it was a part of my library as a special item due to the inscription/signature. By accident an identical copy was offered on for $850. I contacted the seller with a picture and proof we had like copies, not the original. The seller withdrew the book but later offered it for $350 which they got!! Still a valuable account of operations by General Wilson at the very close of the War in Alabama and Georgia. VERY RARE!!

Washington City: GPO, 1862. First. Wrappers. Missing rear wrapper, tear in front wrapper, text VG./None.. Rare pamphlet today, but likely very common during the War and immediately after. The thousands of individuals who were entitled to compensation probably had access to this manual. Also all the lawyers and pay agents who requested funds for others had their personal copy. A compilation of all federal laws relating to both army and navy pensions and bounties.

Government Printing: U.S. Senate, 1864. First. Wraps. VG/None. Cited subjects include a general courts martial of ass't surgeon Webster, management of general hospitals, and orders and instructions in regard to the medical department. There is a very important article dealing with military commander's authority over medical hospitals. A serious issue early in the War. Also general orders pertaining to hospital operations. This from a Senate document, 38th Congress, 1st Session.

Pittsfield, MA: For the Author, 1864. First. HB. Book VG, foxing, neat front board stamping./No Jacket. Dornbusch I-375. Coulter 256: Louisiana service. Nevins I-113: "exceptional descriptive powers.".

Toledo, OH: Slocum Publishing, 1913. First. Hard Cover. Square and tight. Ex lib with pockets, etc. removed. Interior and boards are VG/VG+./None.. Slocum was a good Corps commander who served both in the East and with Sherman in the West. Slocum was commander of one of the two corps sent West by Grant. His advice to Meade at Gettysburg was to stay and fight it out, which they did. Started the War as colonel of the 27th NY Infantry. Won a BG commission at First Bull Run. Quite likely a commander whose contributions are overlooked. He assumed a heavy responsibility at Gettysburg and did extremely well.

Philadelphia: Perkinpine & Higgins, 1868. Second. Hard Cover. Overall VG. A large piece has been ripped off the final blank flyleaf./None.. Covers the service of the 127th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.Most losses at Fredericksburg (Burnside) and again at Fredericksburg during the Chancellorsville Campaign (Hooker) when they finally took Marye's Heights. A nine months regiment. The author was the unit's chaplain. Nevins I-97. Dornbusch I-315.

Claremont, NH: For the Author.Claremont Manufacturing Co, 1864. First. Hard Bound. VG. Small book . Has two relatively small former owner's stamps in the front. Overall tight and square./None.. History of the 14th Vermont Infantry which was a nine months regiment. They entered service in October 1862 and mustered out in July 1863. They were in time for service at Gettysburg. They served in the First Army Corps under General Reynolds. They were near the copse of trees on the third day with the rest of the Vermont Brigade and felt the brunt of the famous Confederate charge under General Pickett.. The book is printed in an unusually large font. The material had to have been fresh as the book was published in 1864.

NY: Neale Publishing, 1914. First. Hard Bound Hard Bound. X-library with spine numbers, very small blind stamp on bottom of title page, pocket remnents, bookplate. Sounds worse than it really is. Square and tight, gold lettering bright.Good hinges./None.. Krick. Nevins II-37. Account of one of the first Confederate martyrs. Ashby served under Stonewall during the valley campaign where he was fatally wounded. His death was mourned throughout the Confederacy. Not a real common title.

New York: Charles Richardson, 1866. First thus. Hardcover. VG-. Spine lettering faded, small spots on boards. However, tight and square with perfect hinges./None.. First Edition Thus, The real first is a Confederate imprint from 1863, this edition evidently "stolen" during the War and published in the North. Not a common book even so. Nevins: II-47: "'Composed in bivouac" by an unconcealed admirer; based on personal observations and some official documents." Howes C-734. SP, Southall Freeman states Cooke was a major of Jackson's staff and met most of the luminaries he writes about during the War. Dornbusch IV-8871. Three appendices. Has the portrait called for in Howes. Maps and portrait VG.

NY: Neale Publishing, 1920. First. Hard Cover. VG+/None.. One of the rarer Neale titles, not found in Krick. It probably is a "vanity printing," done for profit only. Endpaper states "Compliments of the Prohibition Federation, Pittsburgh, Pa. The author tries very hard to show that Lincoln was against liquor - period.

Macon, GA: J.W. Burke, 1912. First Thus. Hard Cover. Overall VG. Both hinges crudely repaired./None.. This volume is likely a reprint from the very rare Marcus Wright book used during his post-War Confederate research. This an excellent reference book, required for the researcher. Thousands of names with their unit of assignment. Not in Nevins.
