1923-1924. Carlton Clarence Curtis (1864-1945) was an American Botanist who published Nature and Development of Plants, 1907. A long trip that must have been a sabbatical, Professor Carlton took a year to travel the Mediterranean, North Africa, and the Caribbean to study the Greek system of vine cultivation, plant life in Palestine, Egypt, and Africa, and the tropical plants of the Caribbean. Joining the professor was his wife and sister-in-law. The trip launches on the French ocean liner, Roussillon, with the first stop being Rouen, France, and then a train to Paris. A fun side note, we can see our diarist is in awe of the coffee as he highlights Cafe au Lait and Espresso many times! After a trip down to Marseilles, there is a boat to Athens. The professor writes about the great Greek societies of the past but is struck by the horrendous conditions of the war refugees he encounters. c. early 1980's. Hardcover. Brown boards, lined paper. Good. 70 pages. 23 x 18 cm. The first nineteen pages are filled with handwriting in cursive - incredibly neat, precise recipes such as tarts, oatmeal cookies, puddings, with some savory dishes sprinkled in. After the first nineteen pages, there are blank pages until a two page segment in the same handwriting which seems to indicate this woman is worried about someone in her life that is addicted to Crack Cocaine. The writer appears to have been watching a Phil Donahue segment on the issue and will be writing in to get the transcript. There is also numbers and prices for treatment. Three recipes laid in. Spine rubbed.

Delaware, Ohio, 1929-1930 & 1937-1939. This particular set of journals, was, at first glance, an archetypal account of small town living in the midwest. The overlooked aspect of the detail accounts that Rose shares is the considerable amount of social connection that was present at the time. There is not a day that goes by that Rose is not visited or goes visiting, either by a friend or family member or both. For instance, the first two entries note: January 1st, 1929: Spent the day at Ellis (son). Rained a little, cloudy. 2nd: Charley (husband) & I went to Mrs. Bucks Funeral in the afternoon. Mrs. Leudman & Josephine Grimes called funeral". Every day, Rose delights us with the weather, what chores she accomplished and who came to visit or what club/committee she looked in on. 1848-1851. Sewn binding. Brown leather, hand sewn binding. Good. 16 x 11 cm. This journal belonged to Laue Jensen Dixon (once written Lauety), who was a member of the 10th Infantry Battalion from 1848 to 1851, after which he became part of the Gendarmerie. Dixen appears to have traveled around Denmark and Germany and was most likely part of the First Schleswig War (1848 - 1851), also called the Three Years' War, between southern Denmark and Northern Germany - over the Duchies of Schleswig, Holstein and Lauenburg, in which Denmark was ultimately victorious. Almost every page has a drawn-in margin on the top and left side. On the top, he writes the month, year, and some version of "Journal of Laue Jensen Dixon" along with his battalion and company number. Each entry is demarcated by what we believe is the first letter of the day of the week and the number of the day. c. 1933. Hardcover. Orig. black boards, spiral bound. Very good. An unusual and unique all in one manuscript, partly typed, partly hand written. Sections include: Physiology, Geography, American History, Art History, World History, French, Archaeology, Religion, Literature, Physiology, Chemistry, Calorie and Nutritional tables, and recipes - pasted in, typed, and hand written. Most likely a homemaker in the 1930's with access to educational materials.

1839. Loose_leaf. Cream paper, ink penned. Good. 27 X 22 cm. Register of costs for the ship Flora, commanded by Captain Daniel Fitch, sailing out of New London, Connecticut, while docked at a whale-fishery in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Disbursements are recorded by ship agents to inform the ship owners of all the charges the voyage accrues while in port. Expenses include portage, pilotage, boarding officer's fee, and goods purchased for crew - sugar, coffee, bread, black beans, and vegetables. Maxwell, Wright & Co. was the owner/shipping company that oversaw the operation in Rio, while N. & W. W. Billings is listed as the Managing owner or agent in Connecticut according to the Report of Commissioner of Fish and Fisheries. Text inked and elegantly penned. Folded with small tears and chips along edges, affecting some text.

Buffalo: The Cellasin Co., c. 1910. Cards. Color illustrated cards. Fine. 15.5 x 9 cm. This colorful trade card advertising diabetes medication was distributed by Mead Johnson & Company, one of the brothers of the well known Johnson & Johnson. Clean and bright.

London: John Churchill, 1858. Sewn binding. Tan paper wraps, holographic title, string bound. Near fine. 7 pages. 22 x 14 cm. Bound together with: Account of the History and Dissection of a Case of malformation of the Urinary Bladder, with Remarks - A. Melville M'Whinnie, 8 pages, London: Wilson & Ogilvy. An uncommon pamphlet on gynecology, with illustrations examining genital abnormalities. Dr. Arthur Farre was an notable obstetrician and physician extraordinary to Queen Victoria. Farre was also known to instigate the prevention of the advancement of women in the medical field by resigning (1875) in protest from the Royal College of Surgeons at women being allowed to take the midwifery examination. The second work by M'Whinnie investigates malformed genitals and illustrates an apparatus used to collect urine and protect the anatomy. Farre's pamphlet - OCLC locates 3 copies, all in UK institutions. M'Whinnie's pamphlet - OCLC locates 5 copies, 4 UK, 1 US. Crisp, clean copy.

London: Harvey & Co., 1864. Hardcover. Mauve blind-stamped cloth, gilt title on cover. Good. 48 pages, (4). 16.5 x 10.5 cm. "The Guide to Manly Vigour." A promotional treatise advocating a remedy for "the forms of Indigestion and Consumption in all their varieties, resulting from secret inadvertency in youth, or from sensual excesses." Readers were advised to send a urine sample for analysis and diagnosis. An early reprint of this promotional book; 1863 edition came a year earlier. Named after the "Prince of Surgery," Sir Astley Cooper who performed the first successful operation on the common carotid artery for aneurysm in 1808. Spine and board edges sunned and faded, front internal hinge split but holding.

Lowell & Co. portrays a Civil War Soldier, rear cover portrays an ad for the Central Hotel, No. 6 Canal Street, Providence R.I. The interior records the Eighth Regiment Staff. Bill of Fare/Menu lists Breakfast, Dinner, And Supper menus. 2 cm. closed tear to spine otherwise clean and crisp.

Elegantly illustrated Banquet Menu and Program held at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington D.C. The toastmaster: Hon. Tasker L. Oddie, U.S. Senator, Nevada. The speakers: Noah Swayne & Hon. William H. King, U.S. Senator, Utah. An interesting pencil illustration on ther rear cover displaying a box filled with "Mineral Resources". 1 cm. closed tear to lower wraps and paper, and small ink spot on cover, otherwise clean and crisp.

Vallejo, California, 1935. Cards. Red cards. Good. 22 x 16 cm. An extensive dinner menu featuring Salmon, Oysters, Fresh Fish, and more. Paperclip holds a wine and cocktail list, a daily special menu and a promotional card for Seagram's Tom Collins. The back cover is printed with a full history of The Vallejo area and the surrounding areas. Lightly water stained to interior. Back cover water stained.

Highlighting the Patriotism felt by the American public, this menu features a promotion for the U.S. Marine Corps on the rear cover: ENLIST TO-DAY*IN THE U.S. MARINE CORPS*ALWAYS ON THE ALERT, ON LAND-SEA- AND AIR. The cover features color illustrated label asking diners to "Try WINE with your dinner tonight - Wine Growers of California. Another added label on the interior of the menu suggests: "Why not try a Dry Martini 25c". Also stapled in are the day's Fish specials. Two small pieces of tape on the interior, otherwise crisp and clean.

1937. Cards. Color illustrated cards. Near fine. 19 x 13.5 cm. The Menu cover design is graced by an enchanting hand colored wood print of "A present-day Japanese woman in her traditional 'Kimono.'" Dinner on this vessel was very European in flavor. Known as "The Queen of the Sea" - the vessel made stops in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Kobe, Yokohama, Honolulu, Los Angeles, and San Francisco before being called to duty by the Imperial Japanese Navy during W.W.II. Clean, crisp copy.

Spring Lake Beach, NJ, 1940. Cards. Cream embossed and illustrated heavy card stock. Good. 28 x 18 cm. Color illustrated and embossed, this Fourth of July Menu was a FEAST! The meal begins with Assorted Canapés, Chicken Gumbo, and Fresh Fruit Cocktail (with Grenadine!), and then the choices: Poached Filet of Chinoock Salmon, or Charcoal Broiled French Lamb Chops au Cresson, or Cassolette of Seafood a la Newburg, or, well you get the message. The dessert is of course a "Star Spangled Banner Pudding". This iconic seaside hotel first opened it's doors in 1875 on the then virtually deserted Atlantic beach front as the Monmouth House. The modern structure rose from the ashes after a devastating fire in 1900. For years, this hotel was a place to enjoy the summer breezes at the New Jersey shore. Unfortunately, the hotel was sold and razed in 1975. Some scratches to the face of this broadside.
