Mediterranean, 1814. Napoleonic War manuscript ship's log for a British warship in the Mediterranean that would be used shortly afterwards to transport convicts to New South Wales (1819) and Van Diemen's Land (1821) in Australia. The folio-sized ship's log comprises two disbound sections of a notebook of a junior British naval officer's training logbook from 1814. Manuscript title to front cover: 'Log &c of the Proceedings of HMSS The Malabar. Kept by W B Boddy.' A beautifully worked half page watercolour sketch of The Malabar under full sail appears on the following leaf as frontispiece. Hand-stitched, laid foolscap paper (water mark John Hayes 1809, vertical chain lines), externally heavily marked, including signs of burning to spine and bottom left of front cover; internally fairly clean, though yellowed, and most pages ink-stained. London: John Murray, 1824. Richly provenanced Nelson family association copy presented by Horatio Nelson's niece Charlotte Nelson to the future Admiral Richard Crozier. Two handsome small octavo volumes bound in straight grain red morocco with gilt decoration; all edges gilt; grey coated endpapers. Armorial bookplate of Richard Crozier to both front paste-downs. Charlotte Hood - formerly Nelson - has inscribed the verso of the flyleaves of both volumes: 'Richard Crozier R.N. H.M.S. Ariadne from The Hon.ble Mrs Hood. Feb.ry 1826.' She appears to have rubbed out the name of an earlier vessel in place of HMS Ariadne - presumably Crozier had recently changed ship. Tipped in opposite the inscription to volume I is a scrap of paper with 'Robert' written on it and below, the explanation: 'This was written by Robert Southey to try his pen before writing his signature 1834'. Zlin/ Praha: Manuscript, 1889. Hardcover. Very Good. pp 156 A substantial transcript of part of the folk song collector Frantisek Bartos's study of Moravian music, Narodni pisne moravske nove nasbirane. Bound in later brown cloth with wax marking on the upper board, and written on foolscap sized paper in blue black ink, this fair copy of 'O Lidovych Pisni Moravskych' runs to 156 pages and includes numerous musical passages and a pen and ink version of the printed engraving of the bag pipes. No name is given for the copyist but it appears to date from the early twentieth century. Bartos was a friend of Janacek and Bela Bartok and was particularly influential on the folk song collecting pursued by the latter. Very Good 1889

London: Charles H Kelly, 1892. Hardcover. Near Fine. [viii] pp184 A book of Christian homilies in publisher's red bevelled cloth, with gilt titles and pictorial cover, all edges gilt. Near Fine; the covers are lightly soiled but the cloth is not worn or nicked, the corners are square, the gilt is bright. Internally the pages are clean and crisp, some spotting to the tissue guard of the frontispiece, there are no marks or ownership inscriptions. A very attractive copy with charming illustrations by Charles Tresidder. Near Fine 1892

Very good, front cover bowed, slight musty smell, bound with ephemera including etchings of historical landmarks in York. The coloured View has been tipped in to the end pocket, creases to one corner. Also laid in booklet: 2000 years of York-the Archaeological Story, Yorkshire Archaeological Trust, 1978, pp28, very good in photographic card wrappers. This item comes from the Franklin Delano Roosevelt collection of Frederick Baldwin Adams Jr, 1910 - 2001, the son of Ellen Walters Delano who was a first cousin to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Adams became a passionate bibliophile who served as director of the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York City for two decades and compiled a significant personal collection relating to F.D.R.. In 1969 he married his third wife who was a Swedish princess and with whom he shared the final years of his life in France. Adams' move to France explains the presence of his books in the United Kingdom. Fine 1943

Very good in pictorial card wrappers which are stamped "Not for publication before (date) 20th april 1948".The covers are lightly soiled, rubbed and chipped to the spine. An interesting guide with contributions by Clough Williams Ellis, W J Hemp and Sir Ifor Williams among others. Internally clean and complete with three delightful hand-drawn maps with decorations by Charles Howarth. Very Good 1948

Durham, North Carolina: Duke University Commonwealth-Studies Center, 1962. 220 x 143 mm. Very Good. Reprinted from The South Atlantic Quarterly, Vol LXI, No 2, Spring 1962, pp 183-196. In very good condition in printed card wrappers, lightly soiled with rust marks from the staples, internally crisp. From the collection of Kenneth Robinson (1914-2005), a distinguished civil servant who became an expert on colonial government and administration. He was closely involved in international aspects of postwar planning, including former colonies, in south-West Africa (now Namibia), and became the Commonwealth Office expert on French West Africa. He became assistant secretary in the CO in 1946 (and head of the West African department), but resigned in 1948 to become reader in Commonwealth government at Oxford and subsequently director and professor of commonwealth affairs at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies in London. He was vice-chancellor of the University of Hong Kong from 1965 to 1972. Very Good 1962

A limited edition, one of five hundred copies, designed and produced in Christmas 1954 for the friends of George Rainbird and Ruari McLean, founders of the publishing house George Rainbird Ltd. Very good, the covers are clean, small dent to the fore edge and spine wrinkled and rubbed to the ends, gutter just starting to crack. Very smart green publisher's cloth binding with dark green coated endpapers, clean fresh text throughout, pp460 plus 2 pages of adverts at the end, illustrated throughout. Elizabeth Thomson King (1818-1896) wrote a memoir of her famous brother which was published after his death. When he gave her this presentation copy she was living at Hamilton Terrace in Marylebone in north London. William Thomson (1824-1907) was a giant of nineteenth century science who did important work in the mathematical analysis of electricity and formulation of the first and second laws of thermodynamics as well as unifying the discipline of physics. (20x25cm) Silver gelatin photographic portrait of Sir William Golding, probably a publicity shot for the publication of his novel, Rites of Passage. Golding is pictured in Nelson's Great Cabin on board HMS Victory around the time of first publication of his Booker Prize winning novel which became the first part of his nautical trilogy, To the Ends of the Earth; three years later he won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Very Good. pp 92 Dickson's naval broadcasts with a letter from the author laid in, presenting the book to his wartime colleague, Sir Clifford Jarrett, who was Principal Private Secretary to the First Lord of the Admiralty during the Second World War. The letter is on 'Office of the Chief of Naval Information' headed paper and typed in June 1946, offering 'a copy of this book', and addressed in Dickson's hand to 'Dear Jarrett', signed 'Yours ever R.K. Dickson'. The book is very good with a little fading to the boards; the jacket is nicked with some loss at the top of the spine - about good condition. Very Good 1946
