As the former collector notes on front, Bob Maier also contributed to a 1968 issue of the anarchist/situationist magazine BLACK & RED, published in Kalamazoo, MI by Fredy Perlman and others. The comic consists of pictures of scientists, with Marxian speech bubbles added; e.g. "If a scientist is to be a good observer, one must observe reality - never, never change reality. Changing reality must be left to the 'experts,' i.e., AUTHORITY." Scarce; OCLC finds two copies: one at Michigan State, and another at Northwestern. Wraps. 8vo. Throughout 1970, the group produced this and several pamphlets; the present work is illustrated throughout with drawings, and typographically laid out like poetry. "We see subversion as a sort of phenomenological scalpel, cutting through the surface of the spectacle of the commodity & bringing to light all the most subtle presuppositions on which the society is based." Rare signed portfolio documenting Hsieh's third extended performance piece, a full year in New York City spent outside shelter of any kind (save for 15 hours inside a police station courtesy of the NYPD), issued in conjunction with an installation at Franklin Furnace. Each of Hsieh's one-year performances was preceded by a written statement of intent and documented with notes, on film, and in photographs, as his long endurance of his chosen conditions progressed: "In the same way that the images offer an apocalyptic view of the world, they show us the survivor hero who managed to endure the penalties of his circumstances" (Ingberman). Hsieh's first two performances required only personal and artistic discipline and the cooperation of one assistant - staying inside a constructed cell in his own studio and punching a time clock every hour, respectively. Scarce catalogue of the 1969 exhibition of Arte Povera and Conceptual Art, less known but as innovative and groundbreaking as the same year's more-mythologized "When Attitudes Become Form," and similarly an expression of its own curator's personality and vision. "Op Losse Schroeven" and "When Attitudes Become Form" were conceived, planned, and exhibited more or less concurrently, but independently: Stedelijk Museum director de Wilde, though supervising one curator and friendly with the other, apparently shared no information in either direction despite considerable overlap in vision.
