Dozens of b/w and colour photos. At the time of this publication, the Queen Mary was the 4th largest liner. At the end of the booklet, The "Queen" is welcomed by the City of Long Beach, California.

Of the 8 Magic Painting Pages, the 2-page spread is coloured in (quite well done) and one other page is partially done plus another page with some transfer of colour; the other 4 pages not coloured. Across from the title page, a boy's name is filled in and "Xmas 1964" above that. All other pages are very good, including the "How to Make Rupert's Toy Camera" page (not touched). A wonderful 2-page illustration on front endpapers plus a touching 1-page illustration on rear endpaper of one of Rupert's friends feeding a carrot to Rupert's donkey.

From the rear board: "As the Canadian Pacific Railway was built across Canada from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, division or sub-division headquarters were designated approximately 125 miles apart. For example, Field to Revelstoke (125 miles) is known as the Mountain sub-division, and Revelstoke to Kamloops (129 miles) is known as the Mountain Sub-division. The two together are known as the Revelstoke Division and Revelstoke was the local administrative location for the area. For over 100 years the Mountain sub-division was known as the most difficult to administer on the whole length of the Canadian Pacific Railway." The book has dozens of early b/w photos.

The humming saws of mills were hungry for logs, digesting them as fast as little locomotives could shift from hillside to millpond, then hauling millions of board feet of finished lumber to the Union Pacific connection at Baker. Born with the sumpter were an array of privately owned loggers like Oregon Lumber, Baker White Pine, Stoddard Lumber, W. H. Eccles and others. Each laid slim gauge rails into the woods and pulled out their log trains with Shays, Climaxes and Heislers. As huge stands of timber fell, thrifty loggers moved their tracks deeper into the blue Mountains. This is the complete story of this narrow gauge and the logging carriers."

In the Andes are the highest railway summits, the stiffest adhesion grades, the most tortuous curves and the hardest operating conditions to be found anywhere. The shady financial transactions behind the building of some of these lines were largely justified by the triumphs of doggedness and ingenuity in laying the tracks where it was thought impossible to take them. But that is only part of the story; the problems of developing and operating the railways when built were immense."

Similar treatment on the spine for title, author and publisher. Some bumping to the top and bottom of spine, still a VG+ copy in a VG d.j. with some chipping to the upper edge of the rear flap hinge and 2" crease indent on the front of the d.j. (not torn). First title in the John Rain series.

A Large Print edition. SIGNED on the title page by the Author, and also INSCRIBED to Lyle and Gwen with a little homily, then signed again by Ray. Here's an excerpt about Ray's cabin: "The cabin was unbelieveably cold in winter and to keep a supply of firewood on hand with only a swede saw and axe for tools, and a saddle-horse with a lariat rope for hauling several hundred yards from the bush, was a never-ending job. Due to the cabin's aging, the lime and cement chinking between the spruce logs had shrunk and sometimes, with a northwest wind blowing, one could see the steam from hot tea in a cup on the table, drifting across the room. Complain as I did, to my superior officers, they simply would not believe how cold the cabin was."
