A little spotting, half-title discarded. Joints starting, a little worn. Ownership inscription of Mary Anne Fielding to title-page dated 1811. 6th edition of Grahame’s popular collection, first published in 1804.

London: Chatto & Windus, 1974. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. [vi], 327, [1]. Publisher’s olive green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, pictorial dustjacket. Edges slightly foxed. Dustjacket a little toned with faint dampmark at foot of spine panel.

Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons, 1925. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. [iii]-x, 58, 4, [2]. Bound without the bifolium containing the half-title and table of contents. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in blue, grey dust-jacket printed in black. Lightly toned. Dust-jacket a little rubbed, slight wear to head of spine panel. The second issue binding, and this copy bound without the outermost bifolium of the first gathering - containing the half-title and the table of contents - apparently in error by the printer.

Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons, 1925. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. xii, 58, 4, [2]. Original dark blue cloth, front board bordered by double blind rules and lettered and blocked in gilt, spine lettered in gilt. Some spotting to text-block edge. Rear board a little rubbed and marked, spine gilt a touch tarnished. Inscription to front flyleaf: ‘With every good wish for the Future. D.D. Sept. 8th 1926’, pencil notes to rear flyleaf. MacDiarmid’s first collection of poetry in its first issue binding of darker cloth with ‘William Blackwood and Sons: Edinburgh and London’ to the foot of the spine.

Glasguae [Glasgow]: In aedibus academicis excudebant Robertus et Andreas Foulis, 1750. 8vo, pp. [iv], 134, [2, ads]. Contemporary sheep, spine divided by raised bands between gilt rules, red morocco label, other compartments with central sunburst tool gilt. Some spotting, first leaf of text soiled. Rubbed and scratched, head of spine a bit worn. Ownership inscriptions and pen trials of one Colin Campbell to front endpapers, later inscription of Joseph Finlayson to half-title. The second Foulis edition of Juvenal and Persius (each with their own title-page, though the pagination is continuous throughout), following one of 1742. Gaskell 158; ESTC T92158.

Parisiis [Paris]: Ex Typographia Frederici Leonard, 1684. 4to, pp. [xx], 455, [71], 148, [16] + engraved half-title. Eighteenth-century calf, boards bordered with a blind rule, spine gilt in compartments with double red morocco labels, marbled edges and endpapers. Some gatherings toned, some spotting and light dustsoiling. Extremities rubbed, head of spine chipped. Ownership inscription of John Campbell to title-page, along with booklabel of ‘Kilberry’, monogram ‘AK’ in gilt to foot of spine. The first Delphin edition of Juvenal and Persius - like many Delphin classics, the basis for a number of subsequent editions - edited by Louis Desprez. This copy, from the library of the Campbell family of Kilberry Castle, is in an attractive binding, probably French.

Edinburgi [Edinburgh]: Excudebant J. Ballantyne et Socii, 1806. 12mo, pp. [ii], xi, [i], 159, [1]. Contemporary sheep. Somewhat toned and soiled, some stains. Scratched and somewhat rubbed, hinges split but joints holding. ‘No. 15’ in ink to pastedown, prayer in pencil to flyleaf. A reasonably scarce Edinburgh printing of the Satires, with Library Hub recording 4 locations: Edinburgh, NLS, Manchester and Ushaw College.

Norimbergae [Nuremberg]: Sumtibus Ioh. Leonh. Sixt. Lechneri, 1803. 8vo, pp. 6, [2], 232. Contemporary marbled paper boards. A little minor spotting. Rubbed and darkened, a touch of wear to spine ends. Ownership inscription of Franciscus (surname rubbed out) to flyleaf. A scarce edition, unusual for containing only Persius’s small body of work (though with annotation substantial enough to make a sizeable volume).

Oxonii [Oxford]: Sumtibus J. Cooke et J. Parker, 1808. 8vo, pp. [ii], xxxii, 372, [58]. Contemporary half polished calf, marbled boards, spine divided by gilt rules, lettered in gilt direct, other compartments with central blind tools. Some light foxing. Extremities just a touch rubbed and marked. Occasional pencil annotations. An attractive copy of this schoolbook edition of Juvenal, reprinting the text of the German Lutheran scholar Georg Alexander Ruperti (1758-1839).

London: Printed for A. Millar, 1751. 8vo, pp. [ii], xxiv, 154, [2]. Contemporary speckled calf, boards bordered with a double gilt rule, spine divided by raised bands between double gilt rules, edges sprinkled red. A little rubbed, particularly to spine, front joint split but cords holding, label lost. Armorial bookplate of Henry Howard, Earl of Effingham to pastedown, modern booklabel to flyleaf date-stamped 1987, a few manuscript corrections in an early hand. The second edition and first in a single volume of Thomas Brewster’s translation of Persius which was issued in 6 separate parts in 1741; Brewster had published a translation of the second satire alone in 1733. ESTC T143345; Morgan 337.

London: Printed by W. Bulmer and Co… for G. and W. Nicol, 1802. FIRST EDITION, 4to, pp. [iv], lxvii, [i], 486 + engraved frontispiece. Errata slip bound in at end. Contemporary sprinkled calf, spine divided by raised bands, red morocco label, other compartments with central flower tools and corner sprays all gilt. Toned in places, some spotting. Lightly rubbed and scratched, joints worn and hinges relined with cloth. The first edition of this long-gestated translation of Juvenal by one of the fiercest satirists of his day, William Gifford (1756-1826). Gifford came from poor beginnings and achieved patronage on the strength of his writing, which allowed him to study at Exeter College, Oxford; there he began work on this translation and proposed a subscription publication as early as 1781, but was sidetracked by other work, including original satires on contemporary writers of the Della Cruscan school (so effective that they are now primarily remembered as satirical targets), and… Leer más

A few spots, one small wormtrack in lower gutter at beginning. Neatly rebacked, some pitting to boards and tidy restoration to edges. Purchase inscription to flyleaf: 'Bot at Mr Caves Sale Apr. 1819'. A rare translation of the satires of Persius (somewhat unusual to find without Juvenal's works), in facing pages of Latin verse and English prose. Little seems to be recorded of John Senhouse, though the title-page indicates that he moved from Seascale in Cumbria to Penzance sometime before 1730. The purchase note is intriguing: Edward Cave, who printed the volume the year before he founded the Gentleman's Magazine, died in 1754; his nephew Richard continued to be involved in his business but died in 1766; it is not clear which Cave's could have taken place in 1819. Marginal marks to a few pages. Dustjacket a touch rubbed, some chipping to edges and faint stains to rear panel, trace of old ownership inscription to flyleaf. Signed by the author to the title-page: ‘Best wishes, Alan Sillitoe,’ bookseller’s ticket of City Book Store to pastedown. Sillitoe’s best-known and first novel, winner of the Authors’ Club Best First Novel Award in 1958, in its evocative dustjacket designed by Mona Moore. Gerard A4.

Amstelodami [Amsterdam]: Apud Iudocum Hondium, 1625. 16mo, pp. 116. Title-page engraved. Red crushed morocco c. 1900 by Riviere, spine lettered in gilt direct, turn-ins gilt, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. A little toning and staining. Gift inscription to binder's blank dated 1935 (to Maurice Baring from Ronald Storrs, 'not to be lent'), bookplate of Maurice Baring to front pastedown, earlier ownership inscription to foot of title-page: 'Ex libris Catherine'. An Elzevir-imitating pocket edition of the satirists Juvenal and Persius, published by Jodocus Hondius II (or Joost de Hondt Jr), son of an important Flemish mapmaker. This copy was given by the British official Ronald Storrs (1881-1955), known for his erudition and refined taste, to the writer Maurice Baring (1874-1945).

Norimbergiae [Nuremberg]: Sumtibus b.Balth: Schmidii haeredum, 1765. Small 4to, pp. [xvi], 64. Each page entirely engraved including the lettering, plus decorative head- and tail-pieces. Nineteenth-century marbled paper wrappers, paper label to spine. Edges toned and a bit spotted, one leaf with a small abrasion to blank margin. Wrappers worn at extremities, spine chipped and front wrapper loosening, no flyleaves. A scarce German imitation of Pine’s Horace, produced entirely without type - each page engraved, text and illustration alike. Only a handful of copies are located by Library Hub, with a similar number in Worldcat. It even has some textual interest as the first edition to use a collation from a manuscript in the collection of H. W. Ebner von Eschenbach. The publisher was the widow of Balthasar Schmid (1705-1749), a printer-bookseller-engraver-musician who may have studied under Bach; the engravings are by his son, Johann Michael (1741-1793) who then took on the publishing… Leer más

Contemporary calf prize binding, boards bordered with a double gilt rule, front board blocked centrally with mitre design in gilt, spine divided by raised bands, black morocco label, other compartments tooled in gilt, marbled edges. A little spotting, first leaves soiled. Somewhat scratched and rubbed, a touch of wear to extremities. Prize label to pastedown from the Leeds Church School Prize Association to Samuel Linscott for the Advent Examination, 1869.

Contemporary half red morocco, marbled boards, spine divided by gilt rules, second compartment lettered direct in gilt, other compartments tooled centrally in gilt. A little spotting, some offsetting to title-page. Rubbed, some wear to extremities. A few underlinings and brief marginal notes, bookplate removed from pastedown. The first edition of Leyden’s poem ‘notable for combining nostalgia about Scotland's past with anxiety about its future’ (ODNB). It also contains some Arthurian elements - in the years prior to its publication Leyden had been assisting Walter Scott’s gathering of folklore for Scott’s Border Minstrelsy of 1802, contributing poems and other material, which may have influenced this work’s mythic bent.

Edinburgh: Oliphant, Anderson & Ferrier, 1897. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. 214, [10, ads]. Black and white illustrations within pagination. Original textured red cloth, front board and spine blocked in black and gilt, patterned endpapers, a few gatherings unopened. Some spotting. Binding a touch dustsoiled, spine ends bumped. The only botanical work of Scottish novelist Margaret Moyes Black (1853-1935), who sometimes published under the pseudonym M.B. Fife. Scarce on the market, there are only five copies cited on Library Hub in the UK and Ireland, with Worldcat noting only two more globally.

Inverness: Printed, and sold by Young and Imray, 1802. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. 320. Contemporary marbled calf by J. Forsyth of Elgin, spine divided by double gilt rules. A little minor spotting. Rubbed, extremities worn and endbands lost, joints cracking but sound. Binder’s ticket to front pastedown, gilt crest of Sir William Cumming Gordon-Cumming of Altyre, 2nd Baronet (1787-1854) to head of spine. The scarce first edition, in a local binding, of the first handbook specifically for ministers of the Church of Scotland, providing ‘forms’ or sample texts for sermons, prayers, and celebrations of marriage and baptism. The Presbyterian tradition discouraging reading from the pulpit, it became clear that not all ministers were gifted at extemporary speech and a number of versions of this sort of guide were produced throughout the nineteenth century amidst arguments over how prayer was best conducted. Early 20th-century half green crushed morocco, marbled boards, spines lettered in gilt direct, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, marbled endpapers. Some light spotting, particularly to first title-page. Spines sunned to brown, extremities a little rubbed. An attractively-bound copy of the ‘second’ edition of the important collection of Scottish folk songs formed by Joseph Ritson (the first was 1794, another under a different title was published in London in 1866).
