From the d.j. front flap: "The Strasburg Manuscript was the oldest surviving manual on painting techniques in the German language, and dated possibly from the fifteenth century. It was destroyed when the Strasburg City Library was burned down in 1875. Fortunately, a copy of it had been made in the 1840's by Sir Charles Eastlake who used some parts of it in his own book. This copy was bequeathed to the National Gallery, London, and hitherto there has been no complete English translation nor systematic study of the document. This want is now filled by the present complete translation which Viola and Rosamund Borradaile have prepared from the National Gallery copy. Thus the valuable source material of this famous treatise will be readily available to students of medieval painting including as it does the early recipes and techniques followed in late medieval times. The translation also includes comments and notes."

"The animals you will meet in this book all live on the continent of Africa, where they once thrived in great numbers. Today these animals all stand on the brink of extinction. Why? Illegal poachers, who hunt some animals for their pelts or horns, are partially to blame. Pollution of drinking water is another factor. Destruction of the animals' habitats is the biggest cause. A habitat is an animal's home, its place to roam and eat and raise young. When a jungle is cleared to make room for a farm, the animals who lived in the jungle are left homeless. Just as people are the reason these animals are nearly extinct, people can be the force that saves them."

"This Limited First Edition of The Safety Net by Heinrich Boll has been privately printed exclusively for Members of the First Edition Society." The binding is very tight so possibly never read. The usual silk endpapers, gold foredges and satin bookmark. Some minor rubbing on foredges but still a NF copy.

1st U.S. Edition. 1984. Cover has some rubbing at corners and the puncture on the front board, which of course affects the d.j. as well...obvious but not a major flaw. "Captain Joshua Slocum, in his 'Spray', was the first man ever to sail around the world alone." This edition is beautifully illustrated with 42 brilliant black-and-white drawings by internationally acclaimed marine artist James E. Mitchell.

From the d.j.: "Under Canadian Pacific's red-and-white-chequered flag, the company's founders, George Stephen and William C Van Horne, created a rail-sea service from Liverpool to Hong Kong. In both world wars the entire fleet served gallantly as Allied troop carriers. "

Illustrated in colour by Michael McCurdy. The text is one of many variations of a forecastle chantey created about 1837 by an unknown sailor and named after the bow section of the ship where sailors sometimes bunked or relaxed. Illustrated with scratch-board drawings by American artist Michael McCurdy.

A very readable copy; no foxing in text. Previous owner's name given as a gift in 1952, on the half-title page.

1st Edition copy. Partial loss of Red lettering at top of spine, as well as some loss to "Houghton Mifflin Co." in Red at bottom of spine. Some wrinkling of spine covering as well, but no loss to the Black portion of the spine nor to the front and rear boards. Title and author on the front board with no loss of the Red lettering, very clean and bright. Corners slightly bumped but very little loss. Paper throughout a little yellowed but standing up well for its 93 years of age. Fans of Sabatini would be happy with this original volume.
