Nicholson, 1855. xiii + [3] + 556 pp. 4to., brown cloth stamped in gilt and blind. Lacks backstrip, boards edgeworn, corners bumped/frayed, gilt cover vignette bright. Complete with all plates present and in excellent condition. The folding panorama of Santa Lucia, Santiago, measures 68 inches in length, and has hand-colored details, featuring figures in the foreground of a couple in native dress and a couple in Western attire. The maps are quite detailed, and the architectural plates are tinted. Good plus/fine plates.

These include a large folding panorama with touches of hand-coloring, and a fine chromolithograph portrait of an Araucanian chief. This volume is a narrative of the expedition, with first-hand of the topics above, including earthquakes, floods, battles and an execution. 1888. HERTZ, H[einrich]. UBER STRAHLEN ELEKTRISCHER KRAFT. (Berlin: Gedruckt in der Reichsdruckerei, 1888.) Offprint from Sitzungsberichte der Koniglich Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin, 1888, No. 50, pp. 1297 - 1307. The text of a lecture on electric waves delivered 13 December 1888, it relates qualitative experiments undertaken by Hertz, at the Karlsruhe Polytechnic, on the analogy between electric and light waves. Passing electric waves through huge prisms of hard pitch, he showed that they refract exactly as light waves do. He polarized electric waves by directing them through a grating of parallel wires, and he diffracted them by interrupting them with a screen with a hole in it. He reflected them from the walls of the room, obtaining interference between the original and the reflected waves. 1946. [WOODBLOCK PRINT] ONCHI Ko^shiro. "UENO DO^BUTSU-EN [UENO ZOO]" Image 24.4 x 18.2 cm. This image, created by Onchi for the Nihon Hanga Kyo^kai, originally appeared in Sept. 1929 in an edition of 50cc., signed and sealed by Onchi, as part of the series SHIN TOKYO HYAKKEI. This impression, however, appears to have been that included in the TOKYO KAIKO ZUE series, which was published by Fugaku for the Nihon Hanga Kyo^kai in 1946, in this case using the original Onchi blocks. It would seem that no signature was called for in the TOKYO KAIKO ZUE series, but this print is signed by Onchi (in Kanji) in pencil on the lower right margin. An interesting example of Onchi's representational style. Good impression with some slight browning on the reverse.
