Glenview, IL: Naval Air Training Command, 1945. First Edition. Good +.. An original illustrated manual issued to WWII Naval flight cadets training at NAS Glenview, dated July 1 1945 to the title page. Generously illustrated throughout with dozens of original drawings (likely the work of a single, unnamed illustrator) and photograph reproductions, executed and lettered in a decidedly Seuss-ian style heavily influenced by modern cartooning, lending a simplistic treatment to gravely serious and technical material. A portion of the "Safety" chapter on p. 29 with the exaggerated likeness of a pilot resting upon a cloud, holding a harp, wearing angel wings and captioned: "Don't try to be the 'hottest' pilot, but try to be the 'oldest.'" and "There are bold pilots, and there are old piltos, 'But!' - there are no old, bold pilots." np, 1958. Very good.. Fascinating salesman's catalogue produced by British Ford, marketing their cars to American dealerships. Struggling financially, Post-WWII Britain enacted an "Export or Die" mandate for its domestic carmakers in hopes of injecting more stable currencies into its economy. This act mandated aggressive sales in foreign markets, and especially in The United States. Ford of Britain had operated as a subsidiary of the Ford Motor Company since 1909, producing an entirely different line from its American division. Since it was indeed a British car manufacturer, Ford was forced compete with itself. These materials date from a 1957-1958 push aimed at getting existing U.S. Ford dealerships to sell and service the cars of their English counterpart. Sleaze erotica reporting on "the intimate sexual high jinks and perverted sex escapades of secret agents"; in particular, those of one British agent, "James," who reports to "M." and whose exploits uncannily mirror those of James Bond. The pseudonymous Foerster is claimed to be a "young bachelor attached to British Intelligence. An inquiry was even raised in Parliament," the prologue reveals, "concerning 'civil servants whose fornications were being financed by public funds', but for obvious reasons the matter was soon discreetly hushed up." The material veers in tone from the parodic to the surreal to the philosophically melancholic; the style incorporates a recondite vocabulary ("the pyral tarantism of being in the world") and a single consistent, insistent voice, alternating long unpunctuated Joycean streams of frantic consciousness with brief and airless sentence fragments. A perpetual undercurrent of violent sexuality surfaces as much in the settings and scenery as in the events: a car crash; a game of human chess; a blazing furnace; a slaughterhouse. The table of contents gives titles for each work, but no author's name; the bookplate, with initials "A. J.," offer the only clue to the item's creator or owner.
